I recently assembled a new system. Since I do not have Internet access at home, I initially set up the machine at work in order to download Windows updates and other stuff. While doing this, the computer was a member of the work domain. When I took the machine home I changed it from the work domain to my home workgroup. Everything seemed to be fine, with the exception of being able to access my second hard drive. When I click on the drive letter inside of Windows Explorer I am told that access is denied. Properties for the drive list RAW as the file format. The drive shows up is Disk Management and is listed as healthy. All options such as Reactivate are grayed out. The o…

We have a Windows terminal server at work. Some remote users are accidently shutting down the server when they log off (picking shutdown instead of log off). I am wondering if there is a way to track which logon is responsible for the shutdown? I did have a policy that blocked access to the shutdown feature, but it stopped working when we upgraded to Active Directory, but that is a different problem for a different day. Thanks for any suggestions.

Does anyone know of a free program that allows me to paste images in and save them as JPGs. Other than allowing me to crop images it needs no other function. I have PSP8, but it takes so long to do anything i get fed up waiting for it.

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro and recently the fan started making a weird noise, so I popped off the case and took a look inside, and the fan is actually turning quite slow but I guess the motor is grinding on it and hence the weird sound. So it's like the motor is not tight enough on the actual fan part. If I tap it, it catches again and spins faster, but doesn't last long and goes back to turning slow again. Anything I can do to fix it or will I have to send it in to ATI? P.S. The card is only some months old, I don't even think I had it for a year.

My case has room for four external drives. I'm currently using two, for a CD R/RW and a DVD R+RW. I also have DVD and CD drives left over from my old computer that I'd like to install. Question: Is there a way to run four drives off an Asus A7N8X motherboard? And if so, how do you connect them? I'd appreciate it if one of you hardware pros could explain or, even better, point me to a website that does so. Thanks.

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=279392 for those of us who have boards with only a 4bit fid as opposed to a 5bit that link will help you to run your cpu at multi's 13x and up. in case you didn't know, a 4bit fid only allows you to chose from half of the multipliers. the half you get is based on the default multiplier of your cpu. this mod is only needed if you can't oc your fsb any higher and still have headroom on your cpu. i'm sure there's a wire trick to get the lower set of multipliers too if you need them instead. i did this wire trick in about 10 minutes and booted up first try with no problems. have my mobile barton running at 13x192 (2.5g…

I am trying to access the hosted Chat, from the link at Xtreme VB Talk, on my WinXP Pro machine. The window opens, but the Applet doesn't init, and the status bar on the bottom let of IE6 doesn't say "Starting applet..." or whatever. It works fine for me on my Win2K laptop using IE5.x. Just not on the XP machine. Both are using Kerio Personal Firewall and are on the same network. Any ideas?

Greetings. I'm currently trying to bridge two network segments using a Cisco 2611 router. I have FastEthernet/0 set up with one IP address for the 201 subnet (###.###.201.249). I have FastEthernet/1 set up with one IP address for the 202 subnet (###.###.202.249). I am using EIGRP routing and have the Network defined as (###.###.0.0). From the 201 subnet: I can ping the 201.249 and 202.249 I cannot ping any of the static IPs on the 202 subnet From the 202 subnet: I can ping 202.249 but get Request Time Out 201.249. I'm more than likely making a very stupid mistake here somewhere. Could you provide me with some guideance? Thank you, 00100b

Hello all, I just recently discovered another of win XP pro's*features*. A few weeks ago I installed a fresh copy of win XP in my new machine. Everything went smoothly I must say, the installer prompted me to set the password for the Administrator accout. So I started using it, I was the only user so no problems there. Until a few days ago when I wanted to create another account. I had to create first another account with administrator rights, which I did, but to my surprise, at the welcome screen the Adminstrator account disappeared leaving me with only the new account! My images, music, firefox's bookmarks and everything are in the other Adminstrator account! how …

I've been running a web server on my cable line, using my Linksys router to forward port 80 traffic to the appropriate machine. This was working fine until the latest round of reorganization. Now, neither setting the forwarding, setting the DMZ host, or both to the server machine seems to work. I don't think that this is a problem with my ISP, as I've had the server working before. Any suggestions as to settings to poke at are eagerly accepted.

Hi all, I have a WinXP Home system thats giving me a major headache. A while back the system started randomly displaying the dreaded BSoD until it eventually stopped working altogether. The system would get past the first WinXP boot screen and then immediately hit me with a BSoD when I logged into any user account, thus making the system virtually useless. Thinking it was the HD, I ran System Restore, did a full CHKDSK scan, full virus scan, tried repairing the Windows Installation, etc all to no avail. Eventually I formatted the entire drive and recreated the partion in WinXP setup. When I tried to reinstall Windows, the same thing happened again! Right after XP's…

Being new to computers, I could use some help with a CPU problem. Following a reinstallation repair with Dell Tech, my computer now is a uniprocessor machine according to the task manager and the device manager. The task manager's performance tab now lists only one graph showing CPU usage history. The device manager also lists only one CPU now. Both were not the case prior to reinstallation repair. Dell Tech insists for the last 3 months that that is normal and everything is functioning and hyper threading is working. Wanting to find out, I have had no luck at Microsoft,Intel, the web,and another posting site. Could it be that hyper threading needs to be enabled? I can fi…

Hi Everyone, Since my new computer was built (about a month ago), I've recieved quite a few "blue screen of death"s telling me that there is an error, and (the more worrying bit) that it was "beginning memory dump". This error message seems to appear randomly (sometimes it appears at startup, sometimes it appears while I'm networking, other times it just appears while the computer is idle). I was wondering what "memory dumping" was and why this error occurs? Thanks in Advance Oh yeah, by the way, I'm running WinXP Pro SP1 with all critical updates installed. My system specs: Intel P4 3.0C GA-8KNXP 1GB DDR 400 (PC 3200) RAM 120GB HDD

What I do is to do a Restart and then WinXP Pro does recognizes the mouse.... This happens once in while, but its really annoying...anyone has a clue why this happens? I need help, and fast. This has happened to me only once before, and I have no idea how I fixed it. I seem to have problems with my disk subsystem, or networking, or the OS in general. I get two different errors under the Event Viewer: and I get many Disk errors, and then on or two Ftdisk errors everyonce in a while. Its not serious right now, but last time it happened, it got serious very fast. I'm running it through a battery of analysis tests. Ill let you know if the HDD analysis boot disk shows anything, and if Chkdsk shows anything either. Thanks, appreciate the help EDIT: BTW, Im not running any raids or SCSI drives.

Hi, I have a small problem with my rather new computer. First of all I wish to say that I have tested different graphiccard, I have tested 1 memory and both, I have tested with fewer harddrives (and no cdrom) and so on. Okay now to the problem, when I shut down my computer for over the night, then try to turn it on the next day I have to wait like 15min-2hours before the startup process starts. I hear the processorfan and chassifan turn on, but the keyboard, screen and so on doesnt. After a while it all starts and works fine. A simple reboot doesnt give me this problem - only when turning off my computer and then trying to turn it on again. What can be the problem…

I am currently developing an application that performs packet writing to cds and wish to intercept messaging between the os XPe and the cd app (direct cd). I have been able to receive the messages (wm_devicechange) but as yet have not been able to stop their propogation in the system. I think that I may be capturing the messages at the wrong juncture in the system. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I keep having something wierd happen to my computer. It slows to a crawl and so I reboot hoping that it will clear. A error comes up and says something about the CPU speed not being set correctly. So I reboot my Asus A7N8X Deluxe and hit del. to go into the BIOS and I had the CPU external freq. previously set at 166. (that is SUPPOSED to be the correct speed for a AMD athlon core xp 2600) I went ahead and dropped it down to 133 and saved by hitting f10 and saving and everything seemed to be ok, but every now and then it still happens randomly, even with it being set to a lower CPU external frequency! Does anybody know what is wrong?? Why does this keep happening!?? …

Hello, I have 512 mb of ram on my computer, but after my bios reset and system fresh reinstall, I get only 256 mb detected, I changed the places of the ram and I still get 256 mb, I think the ram is good, but maybe the bios is not detecting it. Is there something that I can configure, or something? I have a MSI KT3 ULTRA 2 motherboard and an ATHLON XP 1800+, two 256 mb ddr 333 (or 133 i don't remember) different brands, a PNY gforce 440 MX video card, and a western digital 40 gb hard disk. Windows XP SP1 on my system. Thank you very much. Ronq.

My current desktop system fits pretty well inside my computer room at home. My dorm, however, is about two thirds the size and involves a bed and closet besides the machine. As a result, I've been looking for ways to scale down, as cheaply as possible. The current item I'm working on is the display - my current 17" CRT is massive. Does anyone have experience with inexpensive, smallish LCDs? I'm looking for something with decent response, but don't want to dump a lot on it. Recommendations on brand/model?
