Background: I just bought a ECS RS400A motherboard with P4-630 processor, new case with 350W ps, 2x512 ram. using my old drives 30G and 60G. I have reformatted both hard disks. Problem: During the install of windows XP(UG) (when windows is 'starting') the computer turns off. It seems the cd rom slows down or stops reading (like a pause during the install) and then just shuts down. I then tried installing 98(UG) and when I had to insert my 95 disk during the install to verify previous edition, and the cdrom is accessed the computer shutdown. I can boot from a startup disk fine. I have tried using both hd's as the boot drive, tried two different cd-rom drives. …

Hey everyone, I just bought a new laptop and I'm having trouble getting the color, contrast and brightness to the correct settings. The laptop is a Mayhem G5 from ABS and has a Nvidia GeForce Go 6800 Ultra. The "unique" video card isn't supported by the Nvidia forceware download that nearly every other Nvidia card works with. Furthermore, the version of firmware with the card doesn't have a simple wizard to go through to set up the contrast/brightness and hues on color screens. I need to change the display through software of somesort, since there are no physical adjust knobs on the monitor itself. Does anyone know of any software that you can adjust your laptop …

My wife's Dell pc came with the regular integrated soundcard and she has had it for about a year now and never had to use the mic or recording section, the playback is fine but we can't record anything through this soundcard, I checked all of the settings on "my" pc which is the same as hers and I can't find anything wrong so I don't know why it is not recording, any ideas please?

This is the first time that I've used this program. I've built a suitable slide show for a training class that I'm teaching at work. I have some auto cad diagrams that I would like to incorparate into the presentation. Is it possible, without purchasing new software, to use an audo cad file with a power point presentation? I also have a jpeg picture file that I need to add to the slideshow.

Hi. Read everything I can find on screensavers, which mostly has to do with XP; I have Windows 2000 Professional. When I click to download a free screensaver, it only saves as a .zip file. It doesn't matter if I save it to the C:\WINNT\system32 file. All of the other screensavers are preceded by "ss", i.e "ssbeziers," and the system recognizes it as such -- but with this one, it's just a random .zip file. Opening is no good -- it asks what application to open it WITH. Little help?

Anyone have a suggestion for either preventing (read only) or resetting the home page after login (ie domain scripts have finished running)? I need google.com always, period, no ifs ands or buts -> google.com. Instead of giving in to the Domain admins use of login scripts, what are my options?

I am having a problem with my PC not booting up properly. I arrive at the infamous "blue screen of death" where it tells me that my user32.dll has been moved into memory because another dll file is using its spot that is normally reserved for it. This file ntdll.dll is giving me all the grief. I have used a number of different programs to try to access my hard drive but each one is not doing what I require....e.g. DosNTFS reader, FileMaven and a Ultimate Boot CD with several programs for Dos. I am able to see the ntdll.dll file thru some of these programs, but not able to rename or delete it. Can someone please help :( Thankyou Rick

Hi again; I`m sorry to say I fear I have a whole load of problems on my computer, hence another thread. When running my anti-virus program (AVG free) I find that some System Registry files are "open\command".Does this mean I have a problem?Forgive my ignorance here, but I ask,as recently after a scan which found some virus infected files I read that this type of message related to some sort of problem. Something else I was wondering about is the comparisons\variations between the various anti-virus/repair system registry/spyware etc programs on offer.I have run several different versions and all differ in their results, some quite dramatically. For…

 Yesterday I was having no problems with my DVD/CD burner. It's been running fine for 8 months (as of yesterday). Sometime during the day today my power went out (for a change) for about 3 minutes. When it came back up and I rebooted I found my dvd/cd burner won't read anything. At reboot, light comes on and I can hear it start to spin up but it stops after a few seconds then idles. My second bay burner is still fine. I received the 'recoverd from a serious error message' and forwarded to MS which suggests the 'updated driver' causing the problem which I haven't installed (since there isn't one). I've uninstalled-reinstalled through device manager, updated my fi…

System as follows MSI K8N Neo 2 with AMD3200+ 1gb DDR under Windows X pro with SP2 160gb Maxtor 10 SATA, nothing else relevant. I have just added another SATA (WD1200). System boots fine and runs OK for a couple of mins. As soon as the second drive is accessed, the whole system locks up. Drive is blank and unused. Changed SATA cable and also tried different channel, same effect every time. My feeling is that the frive itself may be iffy unless I have missed something obvious. Can anybody help please before I launch the thing into space. Thanks in advance.

My music software's interface is made up of a few different sections, playlist area, track library, left deck, right deck areas e.t.c. I would like to resize only 1 of those sections to fill the entire screen, if not, then as big as possible. I have searched the net for a resizer for this but have only come across "window" resizers, since my software is not made up of separate windows, this won't work so I need somehting that will enlarge certain sections of a page, pic or interface. The closest thing I have seen that might help is an image resizer software that took a pic of a child in a yard and was able to crop the image of the child and made the image of the chil…

I downloaded a few screensavers and got 3 Pup [potentially unwanted programs] in my pc, when I did a virus scan 3 adware programs showed up; 1] If I were to "delete" those 3 adware programs will I still have be able to keep and use the screensavers? 2] If the answer to question 1 is "no" then if I were to "quarantine" the 3 adwares, would I be able tokeep and use the screensavers? 3] I really love those screensavers and would like to keep them, if the answer to 1 and 2 is "no", keeping the adwares in my pc as they are, would this do any "harm" at all? If so, what harm can those adwares do? Thanks.

I began with machine code 50 years ago - that I understood but as things have been made simple they've become hard for old-timers. I know hat I want to do and coukd provide code if I had to, but can't get hold of the tools and circumstances to get them done. 1) Going from Windows 98 to Windows XP and I can't get going. How do I bring ZIP files from a previous computer, or download by internet, and then open and install (and run) them? I no longer seem to have direct access to the tools with which I need to work. How do I download IPlay files and install as I did in Win98 environment? 2) I have gotten some documents to transfer but they will not open, I understan…

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help with the following problem. I was under the impression that all temp files could be deleted but I have a problem with deleting a particular file in temp:- Perfib_Perfdata_878.dat (this number changes v.v.often) I`ve tried all the methods suggested to me so far, such as run "cleanmgr" and using restore etc,but I just get a message that the file is being used and can`t be deleted.I`m the authorised user so I didn`t think I would have this problem.I`ve also tried disconnecting from the Internet but to no avail. I also have some files locked in a "virus vault" (AVG free) which are trojans that have attatched to some files.…
