Ok I have win 98. I went to update my yahoo toolbar on my internet explorer and when I did this it installed successfully, but then when ie reopened there was no toolbar. I went to view in the pulldown menu bar and unchecked the yahoo toolbar and then rechecked it. It still never reappeared. It is not hidden anywhere there are no double arrows indicating that there are more buttons. This same thing happened when I tried to install the comcast toolbar. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the yahoo toolbar several times, but it never reappears. I don't know what to do at this point in time as to why the toolbars won't display. Please help all my bookmarks are on the yahoo to…

Running Windows ME and when attempting to use Disk Defrag get error message "I.D. No. DEFRAG004". It then states "unable to defrag, errors on disk" and directs to run Scandisk. I run scandisk and it finds no errors. This has occurred repeatedly both in normal and safe modes. Any suggestions on how to eliviate this problem?

I've had 2 hard drives on my computer for some time now working fine- no problems. For reasons that I won't go into , I had a need to reinstall XP which went fine except that my second hard drive has disappeared from My Computer. I'm positive it is a software rather than hardware problem since I have not touched any of the hardware. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

I have constructed a "Beyond TV system using a Saphire/ATI Radeon 9550 video card. This card has the standard video output plust a DVI video output. "Nominally" all works fine after a boot up and I get video out BOTH video outputs. But if I leave the computer idle for awhile, the video dsiappears from ONE OR THE OTHER displays. Sometimes the display disappears from the TV and sometimes from the computer monitor. To get the display to return to BOTH screens, I must change the display resolution to something else and then put it back. I am running 1280x720 on the Panasonic TV and 1024x728 on the computer display. I have tried making both 1024x728, and both 1280x720 an…

My HP desktop is pretty old, ('98). I added (1) 512MB, and (1) 256MB stick earlier this year, (my first time opening her up). That was easier than I thought. My problem now is that I have since bought a digi-cam AND am daily re-publishing my first website, (less than 1 month old), and have run out of storage space, I can't even download a wav file, for lack of space). A couple weeks ago, I purchased a MAXTOR 100GB external storage. The unit came with no installation instructions, but some were found in PDF form, on their site. But, I'm unsure how to transfer my digi-pics and website to the external unit, to free up my desktop. I'm very frustrated and am positive that this…

I am a hotel cleark at a La Quinta Inn, and our wireless internet sucks. It works for about half the people on the first floor. I have experience with wireless networks over distances of, say, my house, so this is a bit out of my league. I am trying to figure out what kind of hardware I would need to have the whole building wireless. At most I would say it's 600' x 450' give or take. It's three floors high. We are running nothing more than a basic Linksys router off our internet connection. With so many walls, and a large distance I wasn't sure if I needed to go with some sort of commercial router or what. He's a bit of a tight *** so money is also a concern, but I…

When I boot up I get the a message "Keyboard error or no keyboard present" The keyboard works on the set-up screens and in the DOS mode, but will not work in Windows. Hi everybody, I hope someone can help me. Recently I had a virus/malware/spyware (don't know exctly) infection in my computer. Since then, and after cleaning and running all the anti virus/spyware/malware software available I can't update windows nor run any hotfix without getting a BSOD (blue screen). The error code shown in the screen is not clear, as I doesnt specifically say what type of error it is, just a STOP 0x0000008E. Ive searched online and all the errors Ive found have more information like "DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". But I am not gettin any of these messages, just the "Stop 8E". I've even tried running the hotfixes in safe mode but I also got a blue screen…

  12. This is one of my favorite tricks, I do this on EVERY machine I WORK ON. I'll lay it out in simple terms so those who are not as experienced with a PC can also do this. Click START, then RUN {pic 1}, then type REGEDIT in the "Open:" line,{pic 2} then hit ENTER This will open up your Windows registry editor, next collapse the following tree HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop {pic 4} There you will see an entry called MenuShowDelay If you do not see this entry, then simply RIGHT CLICK on the "DESKTOP" subfolder and choose New>String Value {pic 3}, then type "MenuShowDelay" exactally as I did, without quotations. NEXT, You want to modify its value, …

Greetings. Picked up a used latitude C610. PIII, 1.2 ghz, 512meg ram. Installed Win 98 and although everest says there is a PCI-ATI radeon card, I cant get it to recognize and am stuck in 16 color, 640-480 mode. It does recognize a PCI modem, and it GPF's (MSGSRV32) on the driver installation. I'm wondering if this is keeping it from autorecognizing the ATI card. I deleted the modem and the standard VGA display from control panel and now on boot up, it recognizes the PCI card, (modem) and still GPF's on the driver installation. If I go to add new hardware, it doesn't recoznize any new hardware. I went into system setup upon boot and it does list the ATI card as …

Last week I was using my PC as usual and I put a CD in my CD rom then my cat passes through the cords and accidently shuts down the computer while it was spinning the CD. So then after I turned back on my PC I got these options (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe with command prompt, last known config, start windows normally) but no matter which one I choose Windows doesn't load! When I try to use "last known config" or "start windows normally" it doesn't go into windows, instead it stays at the Windows XP loading screen for a good half an hour and after windows can't load a mesage such as this comes up: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shu…

Hello to all! I'm a newbie here and I want to know your opinion about backup software. I can't choose between two utilities: Acronis True Image 8.0 http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ and Backup Wolf 3.13 http://www.lonewolf-software.com/BackupWolfDownload.htm Nevertheless I heard, Acronis has much more features but is more expensive. But generally I'm ready to pay more to get really good product. So have you ever used these programs and what would your recommendations be?

Hi, basically I've had my comp a few years now and at the moment I'm on my gap year so i'm not using my computer for work and have nothing really important on it. I thought it might be a good time, as it seems to be slowing down, to wipe it completely clean and start afresh. I have all the windows, office etc. all the software i think i need cds. Hardware wise, it's still ok'ish it was top of the market when i bought it and it seems to be going ok (i.e. I can run fairly demanding programs like battlefield2 on moderate-high graphics without too many problems) but I have installed so much crap on it and unistalled thing incorrectly etc. when i was completely new to computin…

So from this morning my PC was clean and didn't have no threats until tonight. When I came back from work I saw multiple error messages that say "System Alert: Spyware Detected", now this error message is shown in the icon tray and is with that yellow warning exclamation mark and if I press on it internet explorer opens and tells me to try this virus-scan but obviously I did not try the scan. Anyway I have had pop-ups coming up on the desktop and my Microsoft Anti-Spware is finding the same spyware every 10-15 minutes (with same name). I think that these actions have been done because my sisters boyfriend downloaded some kind of media codecs and he doesn't even know…

Both a USB and a PS2 keyboard's input will not work on this XP system. A slight "dink" sound can be heard when depressing a key. When booting via Bart's PE either of the keyboards will work. I don't know what system file needs to be replace. I've replaced the keyboard driver with a newly downloaded/installed driver, after uninstalling the current driver. Mouse input does work.

  21. When I plug in any USB digital camera to my Sony laptop, Windows finds the new hardware (disk drive), and installs it, but then the hardware cannot work due to the following error: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. To fix this problem you can first try running a Troubleshooting Wizard. If that does not work, you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware device. (Code 19)" This happens with any camera (not just mine) and with the built-in sony memory card reader. Any help would be appreciated. Regards.

I tried both motherboards since I wanted to upgrade my computer. Twice I ended up with the same problem. I plugged the CSA-649U Ultra IDE Controller BIOS Version 1.9.14 into any PCI-Slot. The datasheet of the SiI 0649 Ultra ATA100 PCI-to-ATA Host Controller says the following: PCI Bus • 32-bit, 33 MHz • PCI 2.1 compliant Power • 3,3V Operating Voltage with 5V tolerant I/O • ACPI: PCI Bus Power Management Spec 1.1 compliant If I press "F1" (General Help) or "STRG + F1", then the BIOS freezes. All Advanced Options of the BIOS are not accessible. At http://www.gigabyte.de/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-K8U.htm or http://www.gigabyte.de/Motherboard/Pr…

  24. Thank you for taking the time to read my inquiry. My computer lost its use of the sound card. In the device manager it simply states "No Audio Device" under the Volume tab, while under the Hardware tab it recognizes the hardware and states its working properly. The device is also "enabled" according to the Properties. When I try to play ANY audio from ANY source I get the following error message: "... cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly." After spending hours checking for the minor detai…

  25. The datasheet of my IDE-Controller CSA-649U Ultra IDE Controller BIOS Version 1.9.14 (http://www.verbatim.com.au/technotes/KW571B.pdf: SiI 0649 Ultra ATA100 PCI-to-ATA Host Controller) says the following: PCI Bus • 32-bit, 33 MHz • PCI 2.1 compliant Power • 3,3V Operating Voltage with 5V tolerant I/O • ACPI: PCI Bus Power Management Spec 1.1 compliant The PCI-card has its notch on the right side (seen in mounting position) which usually means that it is a 5V-PCI-card. What does this then mean: 3,3V Operating Voltage with 5V tolerant I/O? I need some clarification.
