I am trying to repair a machine for a couple of the kids next door. While I am no novice, this one has me pulling out hair. I can run almost NOTHING! IE runs - but gets a zillion "scan your drive for problems" pop-ups. I am afraid to place the machine into my network for fear of migration. Have tried most of the suggestions found here and on many other web sites - all to no avail. tried running spybot, etc etc - all nothing. Can't run smitfraud cleaner or any other reg file - "Task Manager not available b/c it was turned off by admin - NOT... I am really p.o'd on this one and my brain is now officially fried. Please help if ou can - the kids are wanting their computer and…

I installed a new hard drive as a slave to my original C:\ drive but that drive has been unreliable and crashed twice. I'd like to move my operating system to the new drive but Microsoft instructions I have found start with running Windows backup. My computer came with preinstalled Windows and my recovery disk doesn't include the back up utility. I've also searched Microsoft on the web for a download of the backup utility but have not found that.

Windows Explorer freezes and ends itself, or must be ended, whenever I open a folder containing an image file (at least .jpg files, for sure). This is true whether it is all image files, or mixed data types. The window has left/right navigation arrows, and two other navigation icons that I don't even understand, in the middle. The items contained in the folder are thumbnailed across the bottom of the window. Above the arrows it says "No file is selected." But I am unable to select a file, scroll to the right to see what else is in there, close the window, or do anything else. It appears to be expecting a slideshow (one option, in the left pane). I first noticed…

Hi there, We have some servers i'd like to auto-login - though most of what they do runs as a service, some legacy desktop applications point blank refuse to play nicely and must be run under a domain account. As the servers are on a domain, the control userpasswords2 method of auto-logon will not work (the options do not appear on a domain machine). TweakUI would be overkill and a pain to roll out, so the registry is our only option. If we were to restrict the Winlogon key in the registry to the local admins group via ACL, what's the worst that could happen? (Please bear in mind that the only people who ever access this server do it via a local intranet site…

I am interested in changing the location of the directory "C:\Program Files" to a different drive. More generally, there are a number of parameters that one can see by typing "set" at a DOS prompt. The parameter "C:\Program Files" is one of them. Where are they defined? Changing them there doesn't do a thing. -- Don J ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Downloaded Internet Explorer 7 today after updating my reinstall of Windows XP with a lot of help from this forum. Something didn't work right. Everytime I tried to boot it would take me to the desktop and no further. Nothing would load. No programs, no icons, etc. I researched this for hours and finally decided to do a repair install. Went through the directions I got off the internet but it starts out by booting up and the Windows XP Home Edition splash screen runs. I get to the part about installing devices and then it goes into setup is being restarted. Goes back to the window where it shows windows is installing and shows 39 minutes left. Th…

I have a Logitech Ultra X keyboard ps2. I was typing away last night no problems. I shut down. Now this morning, my computer boots fine and my mouse works but I can't type. I've tried other keyboards and they won't work either. I've tried rebooting and I've gone into device manager and tried unistalling the driver and then restarting my computer but nothing works. Can anyone help?

How do I recover a desktop icon for a program in XP? My mother has only the most basic of computer skills so I spent a bit of time with her yesterday trying to show her how to launch a program. I had her move the mouse onto an icon that starts a PPPoE dialer on my brother's computer and then double-click on it. Since she is still very awkward with the mouse, she moved the icon as she clicked on it. It happened very quickly but I _think_ she dragged and dropped the dialer icon onto the icon below it; the lower icon simply disappeared. My theory is that she didn't delete the other program, just the icon for the program. But neither of us knew which program it w…

I just noticed something odd about the "Start" button on the bottom left of my Windows XP screeen. It apears the bottom half of the word "Start" is shifted slightly to the left and out of line with the upper part of the word "Start". The word no longer has a smooth appearance, almost like it has been pushed to the left a pixel or two. Everything else appears normal. Any ideas or comments? thanks, Bob

I have downloaded and installed MS Virtual Machine 2007. The documentation was confusing. It indicated this application would run on an XP Home SP2 Box, 2.2Ghz Celeron, .5GIG RAM, 80GIG HDD. That's what I've got. I received two caution messages as I installed it. They told me that I do not have a "supported operating system" which I mean to take that Microsoft won't provide me with technical support. The documentation was confusing however. One site (on Microsoft.com) said that XP Home was supported and invited me to download Vista to give it a try within this Virtual Machine. Has anyone any additional knowledge with regard to this. Thank you.

When I turn on my computer, it fails to start up windows and restarts after a brief blue screen error message. All of the message that I can read before it restarts is "beginning dump of physical memory." I'm using windows XP on an HP laptop that is about a year and a half old. I am completely clueless as to what I need to do, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I would really prefer if I could salvage my documents and files, but I don't know if that's possible. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I couldn't start my computer (XP Professional SP2) any more and following is the error message: Unmountable_Boot_Volume Stop: 0x000000ED (0x82FA8900, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) On Microsoft support website, there is an article about 0x000000ED, but I cannot find this specific combination in that article. It suggests that it's either UDMA controller problem or the damaged file system. I tried to fix it with the Recovery Console and used "chkdsk /r". The message is that there are un-recoverable errors. Should I use "fixroot" under this circusmtance? Will "fixroot" create more problems if I need to bring the computer to a professional? I would a…
