Every time I boot my computer up, I get the following message: "One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log of alternate copy. The recovery was successful." My computer has been doing this for a few months--it doesn't seem to be causing any problems (other than being rather annoying). Is this something that i need to take care of? and if so, what do I need to do to get rid of it? (I have Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002.)

Crossposted to Windows XP General and Windows XP Configuration and Manage. I have found what I consider to be a bug in Windows XP. It would affect almost no one, but still a bug. As an example, assume that Microsoft Word is already installed and a person installs the Microsoft Word Viewer also. 1) You go to the Folder Options dialog for example by in Classic Menus mode by Start->Settings->Control Panel->Folder Options. 2) Select the File Types tab. 3) Select an extension. So for the example, the person selects the .DOC extension. 4) Select Advanced and the Edit File Type dialog box opens. 5) Select New button and the New Action dialog box opens.…

I use a PC running Windows XP SP2. Fully updated. I currently have 25 Windows Media audio tracks saved in my 'My Music' folder. None of them protected. Every few days or so, Windows (or some program) will move one or two of these audio tracks, usually the same ones, and place them in a folder called 'Unknown Artist.' Those audio tracks still play fine, but this forces me to move them back with the rest of the audio tracks. Then I delete the 'Unknown Artist' folder. Why does this keep happening?

Please help! I got a Pen drive from UCLAN 64mb. I tried keeping all college work and teacher lesson plans on it. It kept filling up so when i tried copying work to another pen drive i lost work from 2004-2007. Basically when drive was full i deleted the files it tried to transfer so as to start again. But i cannot find these folders anywhere, not in Recycle Bin. Even downloaded Recover files appl and File Recuse Plus, neither found the folder. Searching laptop didn't work. Please can anyone suggest something to help me? Please? Kimla Johnson

I've looked through all the questions and answers concerning HT before I asked this question. I just upgraded from a 2.66 to a 3.06HT. When I activate the HT in BIOS XP hibernates/shutsoff after the splash screen. Nothing brings it back from that mode. When I deactivate HT in BIOS everything's back to normal. When I start XP in safe mode with HT activated the taskmgr lists two processors. I've made sure the BIOS is current and the ACPI multiprocessor PC is identified under Computer in Device Manager. I'm running XP SP2 and my authentic copy is XP SP1 and I'm really hoping I don't have to reinstall it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. -- Mattu

I would like to learn how to crack Wep and WPA keys. I have tried using Cain, but could not get it to work with my wireless cards. The options under Cain's wireless tab are grayed-out so I assume that it would not work. The two types of cards that I have are listed below. Type : Trendnet TEW-424UB Wireless USB Nic Chipset: Realtek RTL8187b Wireless LAN USB Nic Type : 2Wire 802.11g USB Wireless LAN Card If anyone has any suggestion on how I can crack wireless WEP and WPA keys using my current wireless cards, I would appreciate hearing it. Thanks in advance. Philip

I have windows xp freshly installed on my laptop. When I click on the Automatic Update icon on the taskbar, it simply disappears and reappears again. Everytime I click on that icon, that's what happens. It seems like a bug. I am not able to download the updates. Is there a fix for this? Thanks

I have a (relatively) new XP pro laptop (dell) and I want to disable the mouse middle-click "Scroll" function that appears in Word, Excel, IE, etc. My Mouse properties doesn't have any reference to such feature (that I've found). The only reference to Middle button is the Alps Touchpad's button definition where clicking Both buttons is equivalent to "Middle Button Click". I'm using an old Logitech USB First Mouse+ and I didn't load any drivers for it. The properties indicate that it's using Microsoft's driver of 7/1/2001, version 5.1.2600.0 I also have Tweak UI v 2.10.0.0 installed but I don't see anything relavent to my problem. Any ideas? TIA

Don't be fooled by illegal copies of Microsoft Office selling for 49$ - 69$. These are not licensed copies and could end up costing you more than $100,000 in copyright fines or willful infringement. Open Office is a fully licensed alternative software to Microsoft Office. Get the peace of mind of purchasing a licensed Office Suite for a quarter of the price. Illegal copies can range from simply giving you access to P2P file sharing applications, copying original CD's onto a CD-R, or allowing you to download an image file of a copied CD. These are all highly illegal, and Microsoft is known for it's strict standards in combating copyright infringers. http://openo…

I have been given a 80GB drive, as above, and for a short while worked fine. The drive is now not recognised at POST and also the master drive is not being recognised as well, the Samsung drive being the slave. I have tried the HDD diag util from samsung but even that wont recognise the drive. Is this drive now defunct and why is the master not being recognised? This has not happened before when I have had a drive fail.

hi all. what is the best soundcard for a win98se system?! my computer came back from the shop, but they had to use a very "cheap" soundcard for it, a C-Media CMI 8738/c3dx PCI, 6 channel. It sounds OK, even with the version 1.0 driver in it.But: I wonder if i am missing something?! I find in the stores that all of the new sound cards are for winxp, now, I cannot use them. I know that on Amazon.com, and other places, that there are many many older cards now real cheap. but which one is a good card made with 98se compatibility? It is for a gaming computer, cannot use too too much cpu-cycles. sempron 1800, a sis741gx motherboard, 1 gig ram. So h…

Help someone, I've just formatted a new HD and installed Windows XP Home. Windows asked if I wanted to create another partition on the HD and since it's a 160 gig drive I decided to split it in two, 75 odd gig each. My goal is two have C and D around 75gig each. Disk Management is telling me that I have a C: drive is 74.52 gig (Healthy system) with 74.53 UNALLOCATED! I have a DVD writer labelled D: How do I allocate the unallocated space so that I have C: D: and E: Mac53
