Thank you all for taking the time to read my question, although after all the time I've spent in this and other NG's I feel I should know the answer. I understand *some* of the basis differences between a disk image, and a disk clone. Apparantly a clone may be bootable, an ready to run provided in it installed in the proper BIOs channel along with it's coresponding settings. My understanding of any ISO image,it is not bootable and it is also a bit-for-bit reproduction,--albeith in only ONE file?? Apparantly raw ISO image is *not* bootiful. I don't understand this is that I thought an image is a bit-by-bit exact copoy of the original. I realize we don't…

After reinstalling my XP computer, the WDS no longer index IPTC/XMP keywords for my picture files. This used to work perfectly. I've tried Copernic Desktop Search, and that program is able to index on IPTC metadata, but I would like to get WDS up and running again. Am I missing a IFilter or something ? According to the WDS homepages, WDS _should_ index JPEG metadata.

i bought my pc around a year ago from a comouter shop that has now changed hands. I was given a cd "copy" of windows and although I asked them for a gneuine cd I was told it wasn't necessary - something about oem. yes, i know, to an extent it's my fault im in the position i'm in. i'm now geting serious issues with software upgrades and also want to look at upgrading to (genuine) vista. but i've got a years' worth of application installs and data on my disk and while I can back up my data, I don't want to have to reinstall every piece of software i have in order to go "genuine", which seems the case. i don't put my self in the bracket of being dodgy, I'm an …

When my hard drive failed, the boot partition was not recoverable. So I created a new one on the new drive. However, this partition is unable to hibernate. Just as the progress meter on the Hibernation shutdown screen reachs 100%, I get a BSOD. No longer have the program but can't get rid of these keys. I deleted them from the registry but they return. They just show up in the start up menu. so pose no problem but I don't understand why I can't eliminate them. Found two DLLs in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM zlcommdb and zlcomm but deletion did nothing. Did everything listed on ZL web site but nada! I have to assume that a program remnant is restoring them? Using w98se. Long story short, several days ago I was gaming, and happened to be running a passive defragmentation utility in the background. Now, I don't know if either of these, or a combination of the two, happened to be particularly fatal, but the end result was an XP install that would not boot. Gave me a generic unbootable error. I impulsively ran CHKDSK from the XP CD's recovery console. Drive checked out fine, however, the chkdsk operation took nearly two hours to complete. I've got an OEM XP CD so I wasn't immediately able to do a repair install, so I did a parallel XP install on the same drive. At this point, I had both a Windows and Windows0 folder, the lat…

Some recent changes to my system involved necessary disconnection and reconnection of multiple (SATA, IDE master and slave) hard drives. The first boot attempt went straight to 'CMOS Setup Utility' with a message window warning of "System Intrusion" and "Check the System", which seems reasonable enough. But this now happens at every bootup and long after the initial changes. Clicking "OK" and then "Save and Exit" (F10) gets XP started up fine, but the procedure has become a annoying. Is there an on/off/reset for this "System Intrusion" message? Thanks for any help. TerryS.

For some unexplained reason Windows installer had stopped working correctly. I cannot think why I have tried all the recommended methods and still are not successful. I have tried reinstalling Windows installer 3.1, but it gets as far as " checking your system" and then crashes if I try and install download program ( EXE file) the installation commences and then when it is approximately halfway through installation it crashes would reinstalling Windows XP on top of my existing installation correct this? I would prefer not to but if it would help I'm prepared to do that. I'm looking forward to some useful replies in anticipation :-)

Problem is the sound is now what can only be described as 'tinny' and also I have just noticed the headphone socket at the front has stopped working. I have tried to different sets of speakers with the same results, and also the headphones plugged into the back of the PC with no luck Has the card gone kaput or does someone have any ideas what I can do?

This problem first started a few days ago, and has been happening more and more frequently, seemingly at random. Explorer will freeze while I'm opening or navigating through an Explorer window, or while trying to open a picture in preview. Once the Explorer window freezes, all I can do is turn the computer off, when I attempt to shut down nothing happens. All other currrently running programs are unaffected. After the first freeze I ran virus and spyware scans and defragged the HD, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. From time to time I notice that my old sound card has a (!) icon in device manager right after a system restart. If I try to reset the device (click disable and then enable), the device will disapear and this event is logged: The device 'Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)' (PCI\VEN_1274&DEV_5880&SUBSYS_20001274&REV_02\3&61aaa01&0&58) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal. Could this be a hardware problem or is something messed up with the drivers? This only happens sometimes. Mostly after a very-short (less than a second) power outage. I DON'T want to mean-mouth McAfee v.5.21.1000 Scan Engine 4.3.20. (I never paid them for it beyond what Compaq passed on in '00). HOWEVER, first the auto went-- & now even the MANUAL update of definitions will no longer work for me, reporting one of the new .dats is corrupt! (Maybe I needed to take the later Scan Engine 4.4.00, but I didn't care to try it again; it caused sluggishness once before). ANYHOW, contrary to my worst fears & expectations, McAfee uninstalled quick & well! It left 3 huge folders behind (easily deleted), but there wasn't much left in the Registry after it's own uninstall routine (by the word of InCtrl5)... Keys deleted: …

I need to restrict users logons from our XP Pro workstations to our Windows 2000 Server to particular machines. Ideally I would like to specify at the workstation level who is permitted to log on to that workstation but I don't know of any way to do that. I know that I can specify which machines a particular user is permitted to log on to in the user control panel in ActiveDirectory/Users/UserName/Account(tab)/LogOnTo(button)... But am not sure if it would apply to a domain administrator and if it would have any bearing on workgroup computers that are not members of the Domain? We have a plain Windows 2000 Server / Windows XP Workstation configuration with…

When attempting to go online, about 8 out of 10 times, messages appears that page cannot be found. This repeats regardless of page sought. The Internet icon on task bar has red X on it. When right clicking the icon, a pop up list with several items appears, 2 of which are Repair and Status. By clicking repair on either of these, a message says that Windows is taking action to renew my IP Address. At this point, I'm ususlly able to connect ,but this doesn't mean that I'll stay connected. I may have to repeat the above several times during a session

I'm using windows 2003 server with sp2. I have created a folder on the e: partition of a domain controller for profiles. The share permission is 'everyone' full control, the ntfs permissions are created when the user logs on. I have also edited the domain policy to add admins to the roaming profile. I have created several users, all can logon without problem but i, using my domain admin account on the server, cannot access or change the profile, access is denied. What is reponsible for this? thanks

I replaced the failed motherboard on my computer with an identical one and although the OS (XP Pro) loads and runs ok, I now get total freeze ups two or three times a day. Mouse pointer freezes and Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work either - have hit the reset button to reboot. This has happened in the middle to doing different things so the cause is not related to a specific task. I can only assume the XP installation is somehow damaged - is there a way to repair the installation without doing a clean install?

This is kind of annoying, but sometimes when logging off my user accounts to log in as an administrator, (sometimes in reverse,) or when I'm using Switch user mode Windows goes through the motions of Switching / Logging me off the account, but hangs (Fast User switching -) or freezes at saving my settings (- Log off.) I usually end up having to hard reboot to clear this mess up. I tried SFC /scannow from built in Administrator, but the problem persists. If possible I want to avoid doing a repair install. Thanks much. C J.
