I have just upgraded a laptop from XP Pro to SP2. I now want IIS installed as well, which was not in the original installation. I've tried *Add/Remove Programs / Windows Components* and ticked the IIS box. It is asking for some DLL files from the "ServicePackFiles/i386" folder but can't find them (the files). Have searched for those files in other directories with little luck. I even reinstalled SP2. Maybe another option is to get a SP2 CD? Anyone help please. My original Emachine had a m/b failure. I took the guts/drive, etc and put in a Gateway Computer. At the time I installed the Emachine hard drives in the Gateway, I had to call Microsoft to get validation. I had to give them the serial number and CD Key of the OS from the Emachine. Now I need to fdisk and reformat the hard drives, reinstall the OS etc. I do not think the the restsore disks from the Emachine will work on the Gateway. Therefore, I need to know now to extract the OS from t he Restore Disk. Can anyone help? Any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated. Lady Day eclark@bigfoot.com

Recently I bought a new USB drive: a Kingston DataTraveler 1.0GB. I installed it in the regular fashion, but I can't seem to access the drive from Windows Explorer: it doesn't show in the Explorer, and when I try to access it with "start j:", a box shows up saying "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer." BUT, it accesses fine in the Command Prompt: not only can I change to J:, I can also copy files to it, and even open files on J: (by using "start j:blahblah.blah"). My WinXP box is pre-SP1 and SP2 (I haven't been able to install either Pack)... is this a factor or not? And what can I do about it? PS: The strangest t…

On one xp machine I have if I type anything in the "run" box (such as msconfig or regedit) it will retain the item I typed seemingly forever. The next time I start the computer if I open "run" I'll see msconfig already there and all I have to hit is ok. On my other xp machine that info disappears when the computer is turned off. Why the difference and can I change something to make it stick? Thanks Yks

I'm not sure if this is where I need to ask this and I apologize if it is not right. I had a virus on my computer and could not get rid of it so I had to reformat the hard drive. I used my Windows Prof disk to do this and after it was finished installing, I noticed that when I click on a dialog box Title Bar and drag it across the screen, the movement is not smooth at all like it was, it is now very "jumpy" like it is trying to catch up. Does anyone know if there is a default setting that needs to be changed to correct this problem? I can't use my computer this way, it is driving me nuts. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi, AppSvc32.exe consumes between 5-55% of CPU per the Windows Task Manager. What does this executable do? Can it be safely removed/deactivated and if so, how? Any input and feedback is appreciated. Regards, KMC

Hi All I have a Windows XP SP2 box which I assembled. It has been working fine for teh past three years and I have never had major issue. Recently however it has started to simply reboot itself for no apparent reason. I did change the power supply in Jan 2007. What happens is that I am working on something and - boom - the machine restarts. When it comes back alive, I DO NOT See event ID 6008 indicating a drty reboot. This really puzzles me. I then did a filter for event log events and noticed that I only see events 6009 and 6005 in the sequence. I rarely see 6006. Now, if a machine simply restarts, should I not see a 6008? Why doesnt my system log it? I …

My Windows XP Home Edition is stuck in Safe Mode. I was running a Norton Virus Scan, and following directions on the Norton Web Site, I entered Safe Mode by clicking SafeBoot option on System Configuration Utility and by temporarly stopping System Restore. After running the virus scan, I tried Run > Start > msconfig, and nothing happens (hourglass appears for about five seconds and then disappears). I tried Run > Start > c:\windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\msconfig.exe, and nothing happens. When I click on the icon for msconfig.exe to "Run as" I get the error message, "A device attached to the system is not functioning." I tried to locate boo…

As I'm viewing webpages in IE7 or navigating files in Windows Explorer, something automatically, and continually (about ever minute or so) 'clicks' me out of the active window leaving no windows active. This is particularly annoying when I'm navigating with keys or the scroll-wheel as I have to first 'click' back into the window I was trying to view before doing anything else. It almost seems like something is controlling my computer like spy-ware or something. I've got the latest McAffee virus software running and as far as I know I'm virus free. I can't pinpoint exactly when this happened, but it seems rather recent (could be with the install of IE7). But co…

Came home to find my clocks blinking and computer idling (nothing on the screen but fans running. Turned computer power off and restarted after 15 seconds with no startup but fans running and no beeps. Pulled power plug and recycled start up with still no running. Pulled power of one hard drive and has a flash. Left power cables off both hard drives, floppy and CDROM with still no startup. Any suggestions? Was thinking maybe the cmos is messed up or would there be a fuse that can be replaced?

I run Windows XP Pro SP2 and have been unable to successfully install software requiring the Windows Installer for several months. I am using the latest installer provided by Microsoft - Windows Installer 3.1 (V2) [WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe]. During each and every installation requiring Windows Installer, I always get the same error message - "Product: ______. The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2932." Microsoft's Event Viewer simply restates what I see during the failed install. The link to the Help and Support Center provides no additional inf…
