Just bought a new desktop with XP Home Edition, Serv Pack 2. Have downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.x. System "says" installed correctly and shows desktop shortcut, but when double click on .pdf files, hour glass appears for second or 2, then goes away. No file open happens. Tried old versions of Adobe Reader (7.0.1), exact same results. No error messages displayed either. So far, this is the only program I am having problems with.

Very puzzling. Appreciate any help/ideas anyone may have. I've been patching xp from ms. site for the last couple of weeks. Installed 19 or 20 patches. Now, I cannot see the folders and files that Internet Explorer (6 sp1, latest patches) uses for its cache. These are in D:\Documents and Settings\xxUserID\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files Folder options: show hidden files, show all files with registered extensions and show system files. That is, show everything. Properties for \TemporaryInternetFiles showed 90 megabytes, in eight or nine subfolders and tens of thousands of files. Windows Explorer showed only the top level folder which held 350…

I did a motherboard swap yesterday and an "in place" upgrade of XP with SP2 following instructions on the web. Everything seems to be ok except now the security updates that automatic update is finding will not install. There are a whole bunch, 20 or more queued up but everytime they try to install, a message comes back saying they cannot be installed. Tney have tried to install themselves 3 or 4 times with the same result. I did not consciously change anything changed during the re-install and in fact, everything seemed to be pretty much the same afterwards. Auto updates always installed fine in the past. I haven't had any luck finding a solution with Googl…

Suddenly, when I view the thumbnails of my photos in My Pictures with Windows Explorer, each thumbnail has an annoying Internet Explorer logo on it, practically obscuring the entire thumbnail. The logo is the blue "e" with the gold swish. How did this happen? And how can I go back to plain thumbnails showing just the small version of the photo? Thanks in advance for any help solving this mystery. TexJo

Bored and let unused icon cleaner clean desktop. Had a command or program that placed a shortcut on desktop that would show your IP address and all other details for networking. I've forgotten it, can't find it in my XP tips file, so hoping someone would be kind enough to help me out. I can do ipconfig for XP but this was something like winipcfg for W98 that would give a neat little window. Thanks in advance. Mark

Hi Experts, I've installed AOL and Yahoo Instant Messenger awhile back, but both have a behavior where they install themselves into every user's account. So when other users log into their accounts the AIM and YIM initiation screen pop up and it's very annoying to users who don't use those IMs. How can i deinstall programs from other users' accounts while keeping them accessible in mine? Thanks, GettingByOk

I am about to buy a laptop and I guess it will have Vista. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but will it be easy to link the two PCs to get the internet on each and transfer files between them (the PC is only 768MB RAM - so not really big enough to upgrade to Vista). The internet obviously comes into the PC and in the past I had another laptop with XP and with a cable could easily get the internet on each. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

When installing more memory in windows XP home do you need to do a repair install Or will windows just see it? With memory so cheap I have 2G. But with memory so cheap I was thinking about putting in 2G more. I have a Asus A8V-XE with a AMD Athlon 64 4000 and Asus EN7600GS video card. Use DSL for internet. Thanks Johnny

I recently discovered I had 2 trojans on my computer. Before I discovered this I suddenly was not able to share documents on my home network. I have 3 computers on a network. The computer with the viruses(computer A) has the direct connection to the internet and the other 2 (a desktop{computer b} and a laptop{computer c}) have wireless connections through the router. All the computers can connect to the internet. However computer A will not show the other computers in My Network places. Computer B shows computer A but when I try to open the folder to view the files within I receive an error saying I do not have permissions. All this is accessed through admini…

Just purchased nortons 360 and went to back up and cannot get my e-drive to work. Went to my computer and when i right clicked on it a blank page came up, tried doing the same with my d-drive and that worked. How can i check to see why its not being deteced or maybe a driver not installed? Last year I had some problems with my pc and Dell did a reformatt on it for me on-line. Could have something not been installed? I did all the drivers myself--wow? When I install a cd into the drive the light flashes and the little green disk shows up next to the cursor momentarily and goes off. Now talking to my daughter she says she hasn't been able to burn any music for some…

a)Format c:\ and Reinstalled XPHome-SP2. The installation program changed my setup of drive letters. I wish to return to my old setup, found out "How to do it" - Control panel/Admin..... but it's the warning path that keeps me from doing it. "Environment variable". I looked at the explanation, 95% above my comprehension. I guess they mean sophisticated programs with PCs communicating to each other and ????? This is for a Home based PC, no games, no pictures. b) on e:\ are all my old programs. Do I have to reinstall them so that they re-appear in "Add and Remove" Your help is "Welcome"

I have a situation where a company is running a sql software app, the server side needing tcp ports 1583 and 3351 open for communication with the client side. On the server we have the Windows Firewall turned off and we are not filtering any traffic coming in and out of the box. When we try to connect to the databases we are getting an error (on the clients) stating that the sql manager isn't running on the specified port. When I run a netstat -an command I find that the 1583 port is in the close_wait state, and port 3351 is not showing at all. When we contact the software vendor they claim that we are blocking ports - but we are not blocking anything from c…

Hi, I want to run the program memtest86 to check the computer's RAM. This program cannot be started in XP, so what I need is an OS on a CD I guess (there no floppy drive). So how do you burn a Dos-like OS on a CD, thus creating a bootable CD? Of course, memtest86 should be burned on the CD as well. OS is XP SP2, motherboard is ASRock P4VT8+. Thanks in advance.
