Whever I use explorer, or my computer, etc., and look at the contents of a folder, or search by name, I see multiple listings of the same file. This is disconcerting. When I try to do a group delete, since I may have the file listed multiple times, it says it can't find the second instance of the file and therefore cannnot delete it. So, it limits deleting to one file name. Why does Explorer/My Computer/Search list each file name multiple times, and what can I do about it. I searched MS help for multple file, filename, repeat, and various combinations, but as usual, there is no mention of the problem.

Hi There, I've established the following security measures for my computers and implemented them also on a number of my friends computers. So far so good but have I got all the angles covered I wonder? This is what I have setup: 1. Windows XP update on and kept fully uptodate. 2. Windows firewall on. 3. Spybot kept uptodate and run monthly. 4. Ad-Aware kept uptodate and run monthly. 5. ccleaner run every month. 6. Antivir PE Classic in operation and run weekly. Does anyone have any constructive comments please? I use all free legal software. Thanks in advance. Buster

I would like to know if there is any possibility to delete profile after loggoff. Any kind of script which can be written in logoff script so that user profile will get deleted after logoff. I have seen delprof.exe from Resource kit but I found from other forums that it will delete all the profiles under Documents and settings. Is there any possibility to delete only particular user profile after he logsoff. Operating system: Windows 2000/XP Server OS: Windows 2003

For a little while now I have had 2 errors showing a bad block each time I start the computer for that day. I ran chkdsk /f a week ago and it found an error and fixed it, I have since run it and it finds no errors. On the 30th June I looked at tne Event Viewer and found 346 consecutive errors all with the same problem "Bad block on Harddisk 0" Is this likely to be a true error? I have not shut down since then as I fear the computer may not restart. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Teriel9 -- All our emails are scanned by Norton Antivirus before sending Please advise any virus that gets through

Peer-to-Peer network - laptop to desktop, both running XP SP2 and fully patched, Windows firewall on both. I have pointed the "My Documents" folder on the laptop to the "My Documents" folder on the desktop, which is shared, and all the documents and folders inside are marked as available for off-line use. Suddenly, this morning, I can't create either a new folder or new document on the laptop, through "My Documents" whether on or off-line. I get "Access denied". Yet, If I access the "My Documents" folder on the desktop through My Network Places, I have full access! Can anyone suggest why this should have suddenly happened, and what can I do to rectify this?

I'll give the long version, so others might think twice before ending up where I am. Today I decided to give ubuntu a try, just to give me something new to play with due to the fact that I can currently dish out about $500 for vista ultimate :( I'm not new to computers, as I work with them every day, though not a "geek" by any means. After installing the latest version, letting it partition my drive, ect., I started having minor issues. All in all, it seems decent enough, but looks like it is still heavily depends on command lines. Simple things such as my resolution being to low, turned into a nightmare. I searched their forums, tried changing drivers, editin…

Following advice received via this NG I have set up an icon on the desktop to run a ScreenSaver that displays the photos in a directory. How can I specify the order in which the photos are displayed? When the slideshow is interrupted I want the user to be prompted for their password to prevent others from accessing the machine, since it will be running in a public environment. How can I do this?

Hi, I broke my installation of Windows XP SP2 after messing around with a new vga card and had to perform a repair install. This mostly worked OK, but my installations of SQL from VS2003.NET and the SQL component of Outlook Business Contact manager both now seem to be broken. Additionally MediaPlayer 9 is complaining that a dll file version is too old and won't run because of that. I think that the problems would be resolved if the updates to the various installed programs could be reapplied. Unfortunately, I only have a dial-up connection to this PC at this time (until recently I did have broadband and was quite careful about updating the system). Becaus…

Every time I try to launch a PDF file from an e-mail in Outlook Express, I get a security setting error saying "your security settings do not allow the file to be down loaded. I have to right click on the file and save the file to a directory and then open it. I have looked all over and I cannot find the security setting that will let me open PDF's without first having to save it to my hard drive. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a w2k3 SBS server. I have a CAD department and they store their files on a Snap! server. I want to move them to a storage server which will also act as a secondary backup to the main server. I am having difficulty trying to work out how to set this up so that it can be backed up. My supplier says that windows 2003 Storage server comes preconfigured and preinstalled. That tends to suggest that I cannot get to add/remove programs to add my Backup exec agent for example. The main problem that my Cad people have with the snap! server is that it does not have an operating system so bexec always falls back to using native file access and is slow. …

(I thought I'd posted this earlier but it appears not have gone through) I had a dual boot linux and windows xp machine. that is until i decided to get rid of linux. i removed the linux partitions and was then presented something called grub on every subsequent startup, and i couldn't boot windows. i used the xp install cd to boot and selected recovery, and after a bit of fun and gfames i ran fixmbr. the fun and games entailed the restore seemingly doing an install, which ocnfused and worried me. during its "recory" it complained about a number of files missing, so i had no choice other than to ignore the warnings and continue. eventually after finally…

I had to reinstall XP Pro from a brand new OEM installation disk - about 3 days after I bought the system. During the inital installation (in text mode), the installer reports that it is not able to copy a number of files to the hard drive (eg. cyzcoins.chm etc). This occurs after the formatting part of the procedure. On the assumption that there was a drive error, I tried duplicating the disk and burning it to a blank disk. It burnt OK, but the same error occurred with the copy. I suppose I should put this down to a dodgy installation disk, but my son has had the same experience with XP Pro with an upgrade disk. Furthermore, I find that CD-ROMs usually do…

I have just bought the latest HP compaq notebook and everything works ok except for the power options. I plugged in the power option hoping that this would save on battery use, but NO NO - it kept on using the battery. I have now charged the battery up again, but would like to know how I can use only AC power when I want to. I have the correct acaptor but the salesperson told me I should actually disconnet the battery from the computer (this is a tricky operation believe me) whenever I wanted to convert to normal AC power. Help please? I am a 70+ female and quite computer literate, but I simply dont want to have to always use the battery and keep on rech…
