I am building my Dad a new PC and want to confirm the vista requirements to do remote desktop connection. I am intending to do remote support over the internet when he needs help. I have Vista Home Premium installed running Aero. Do I need Vista Enterprise or Ultimate installed on his machine to take control of his desktop? I've read this on the MS website, but it isn't very clear: "You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N, or Windows Vista Home Premium. We discovered that although we disable the firewall through a domain policy, some XP Service Pack 2 machines still have the firewall enabled. These workstations are generating events1030 and 1058 errors in the event log indicating problems with policy application. I've read a lot of things on the internet about these errors including issues with the DFS client, DNS configuration problems, and other things that were remedied by XP SP2 - but I've confirmed these things are correct. I highlight a file in My Pictures then select Email this folder's files. The send pictures via email box appears with make all pictures smaller selected and then a box opens for Microsoft Exchange Setup. This function used to open Microsoft Outlook express. I do not have Outlook installed and I have verified that Outlook Express is my default email program in Internet Options as well as the Registry. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I installed a freeware DVD player and it plays my DVDs just fine. When I insert a DVD into the drive I get the "What do you want windows to do" prompt, but my player is not listed. I am selecting "Take no action" and then I manually launch my player. I don't want to disable the prompt, I would like to add my player to the "What do you want windows to do" list. Is this possible? I am getting an error saying that MS Serif bold is missing. It seems that this font is a part of Win XP. If so, please tell me how to extract this font from WinXP Pro disk. TIA. Raymond

Hello! We have 2 servers (1 terminal server and 1 main server). Both have windows 2000 server sp4.We're changing the main server with a new one. We're going to install windows 2000 server on new one also.Both servers are DC in a single domain. On the main server there's a terminal services licensing server running with 10 licenses(TSCALs). My question is how can i move these licenses from the old server to the new one? thank you

Hi My Vista Home Premium install works well and is nice and stable (dual Xeons, plenty of memory, standard peripherals) but - On startup / login many apps have not saved their settings, for example : Windows Live Messenger does not remember my e-mail/login Firefox reports 'did not close properly, start new or restor session' Outlook reports 'Did not shut down properly, Start in safe mode Yes/No?' My XP Home CD (original) has died...sorta. It's stopped reading at about 35% of the way through. I tried to create an ISO to restore using Nero but Nero can't go beyond the 35% mark either. Any suggestions? I HATE being without the CD! If anything happened and my restore points messed up (which HAS happened) I'd be without an operating system! HELP!

Hello, My issue is, from a computer I can ping the server, but I cannot see the shared folder. DNS & Wins config are ok. In the Event viewer I have this error, ID 1053 & 1054 and some Dcom error. When I go to services.msc and try to start Net Logon, I can't find it. It looks like it was deleted some how... So I did some research and did not find anything that says anything about that !!! Can anyone help me with that ?

I think there is something wrong since that's an insanely high count - but the server remains fast and stable, so I'm not sure. It's an x86, with 1GB of RAM (generally around 3/4ths is used). Is there something wrong or is this perfectly OK?

There's some confusion over whether Home Basic will run OpenGL applications using hardware acceleration since Home Basic does not support Aero. Based on my limited knowledge of Vista architecture, I would expect that with the correct ICD, hardware-accelerated OpenGL applications would run perfectly fine on Home Basic. Can anyone provide a definitive answer on this? Thanks.

I am sure I have it set up correctly. However nobody is recieving external mail. I tested a few accounts by sending from hotmail, and my own home address, and nobdy recieves. The log files do not show any errors, and I ran the troubleshooting procedures, including telnet external server etc, all checked out ok. Temporarily I added pop info back to everyones outlook 2003 and its all fine now. But some people are saying they were sent mail in the past day or so and …

I had a problem the other day with a usb modem (the usb port it was on decided to die) driving me crazy and 2 questions came up during that hope anybody can point me in the right direction googling believe it or not didn't help :) Where are the settings for Local Connections? or how can I access a Local Connections settings when the device it is assigned isn't connected, to say it's icon isn't there? This is a Windows 2003 Server Std SP1 fully patched. After the server has cold-booted or restarted and a few minutes has passed the Lsass.exe takes the CPU to 100% and stays there. I have run worm checks and he lsass.exe (3/25/03 8AM) seems ok. The hosts file is clear. Is this file corrupt? Should it be replaced? Thanks in advance!
