Hi, I hope some one can help me get my husband's computer running or he's going to drive me nuts on the holiday. Xp pro w/service pack 2. Windows One Care, no third party AV or firewall. Automatic updates are on. He shut it off about 10 pm last night, turns on about 7pm today Windows hangs just after the boot screen (default). He's not into tweaking and installed Encyclopedia Britannica a few days ago. Windows one care did some updates yesterday about 2pm. I got it to boot to safe mode a few times, here's what I'm getting from the event monitor: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7001 Date: 7/3/200…

I first mentioned this a couple of months ago and received several replies but the problem remains. Often when clicking on a link, it won't open and I receive an "invalid syntax error" message. Sometimes, when I return to it later it opens OK. This seems to be happening more and more. Would anyone have any ideas? Dora -- limey113@yahoo.com

On my home computer (not this one), I deleted a foreign language support and since then it does not want to accept Microsoft security updates. I went to the Microsoft problem solving page entitled: 'Cannot install some updates' http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798#appliesto The first method to try was as below Method 1: Rename the Edb.log file Rename the Edb.log file, and then try to install the program again. To rename the Edb.log file, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then OK. 2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst …

Hi all - I am getting this message often during the day as I work: "updateLists.exe has stopped working A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you is f a solution is available." I thought maybe something was up with the automatic updates, so I went and updated manually. I am still getting the error message. If you want me to send you a picture of the error message, I have it in a Word document, but it would not paste into this window. Thank you so much! Last night I was burning a video I made. So I was waiting for it finish on this program called Cheetah Dvd Burner. All a sudden it stopped and said something was wrong and so the cd popped out of the cd/dvd drive. I took it out and tried burning it again with a new disc. I inserted it but the usual message that always pops up when i inseret a new disc did not pop up this time.. So I was like ok.....maybe it doesn't pop up this time no big deal. After clicking the burning button a message popped up saying I need to insert a writible disc or a new disc. So I took another new disc and tried to burn it but it did not work. I even tried putting in a cd to listen to it …

Task manager shows me that of the many applications running on my XP machine the only one using significant CPU resources is "System Idle Process" taking 95 CPUs (anyone know what the units are??). Is there a way to discover what this process is doing, or is a case of shutting it down to see what crashes? Jeff

I recently had to re-install XP on my home computer after it kept shutting itself down and rebooting. When I got back up and running, my photos, document, and itune files (among others) ended up missing. I've checked my backup disc and still not having any luck. Any suggestions on retrieval software?

Hi, I was given an old armada laptop, P2 200 Mhz, with 32 megs on on-board memory, win98se and it was working fine, although slowly. So, i bought a 32 meg sodimm at a computer show last week for $5 (PC100) and put it in, and viola! now I have 64 megs and all's well, this was a week ago. In the meantime I had ordered a 64 meg sodimm, PC100, from ebay ,and I waited for that to arrive before my next step, upgrading to ME. Yesterday, the 64Meg Arrived. I installed it, and the laptop hasn't run properly since. I think it is just a co-incidence, and not related to that sodimm. Here is what it does: hen you go to start it, it partially boots, and then shuts down,…
