Hi I have an ibm thinkpad x23, and shut it down about an hour ago. When I went to reboot , all the lights come on then they go off and only the light with the z in a circle stays on. The screen stays blank and the hard drive spins. Could I have deleated the bios when I added memory (shocked the motherboard?) Thanks for any help!

I have inherited a Dell laptop about 5 years old (Inspiron 8100) with Windows XP from a deceased relative. He was not someone who did much maintenance like defragging etc. nor even protected very dutifully against viruses, etc. I would like to clean off the hard drive completely and then reinstall I know next to nothing about PCs. Can anyone direct me to an idiot-proof guide, preferably online and step- by-step to doing this? Thanks.

H Guys, brand new install, Server 2003 (x32). SO OK, I put together this nice new Windows Server 2003 (x32), join it to the domain, and enable TS. I then connect to it remotely as Administrator, all's well. So let's take the KB/mouse off and run her headless, move her into the server room. Apps are installed as Admin, all is well. Go for it guys, use it. 'The policy of this system does not allow you to logon interactively', HUH? Even though Terminal Services is installed the server is acting like 'Remote Desktop', 2 sessions and Admins only. I've just been in (remote) and removed the tick from the TS win component, used Petri notes to enable R…

The vista task scheduler schtasks.exe provides the facility to take an action when an event has been recorded in the Windows event log. This facility is only really useful if the triggered action has access to aspects of the event, such as date, time and event message. Is there any way to get this information passed to the triggered action from the event log entry? I can't see a way, either by using the command line schtasks.exe, or the task scheduler GUI.

I am on very slow dialup 26.4, ATT does not offer DSL in my area, but the weird thing is I can be surfing and all of a sudden pages can not load, can not send or receive emails. The connection icon is still showing up with my connection speed, but when I right click on it and click disconnect nothing happens. I can try and connect and it tells me I am already connected. To get back up and running I have to close down the computer. Could this be something with phone lines, as I have the same problem on my laptop and even if I connect using earthlink server instead of ATT. I would just like to know who to blame, so maybe I could get it fixed. thanks elaine

When I wanted to check device driver status in the control panel (XP SP2), I opened System, selected Hardware and then Device Manager. I get a "failure to navigate error" and then a popup saying that the MS Management Console encountered a pronlem and will close. The error signature is AppName mmc.exe AppVer 5.1.2600.2180 ModName devmgr.dll, ModVer 5.1.2600.2180 and Offset 00012a1f. How do I repair this problem?

I have gone to Windows Explorer and Folder Options both and checked show hidden files, but I still can't see hidden files/folders in Windows Explorer. If I use a third party program like FreeCommander, I can see the hidden stuff just fine. Perplexed, Dan -- ---------- Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change. ----------

I have an HP Ultrium 2 tape drive that shows up in the device manager but is missing from the removable storage libraries, and therefore missing from NT Backup. This is on Server 2003 SP2. Is there a way to troubleshoot/repair the RSM so it shows up? - The tape device is properly recognized at boot, and properly recogized it SCSI ID is changed. - The drive passes all the tests with HP Tape Tools

Checkdisk wont run because it says it needs exclusive access so I should restart but doing so doesn't solve the problem. Have defragged, run disk cleaners etc (adaware, advanced system optimizer, ashampoo) with no results. Thanks in advance

I'm running on a wireless network, so I don't need to know that my net cable is unplugged. Neither do I want the windows wireless icon, because it don't work rite half the time anyway. I do want my Broadcom icon, because it tells me the truth, and I also want to ALWAYS see my battery icon, even when the power is plugged in, so I can see when it's charged up. So, I right click on the taskbar, go to properties, customize, and pick Always Hide, or Always show, as the case may be, Apply, OK. Next time I boot up, it goes back like it was!!!!
