I have a 2 year old HP Pavilion dv1000 laptop running Windows XP SP2 Professional (Pentium M 1.73 GHz, 1 GB Memory, 80 GB 5400rpm HDD) and Fedora Core 7 (HDD Layout: 64 GB - NTFS, 1 GB - Linux Swap, 9 GB - ext3, 204 MB - QuickPlay). I had recently installed Fedora, and as I have always done, ever since I started using Linux in 2003, I used Partition Magic 8 to resize my partitions. 2 days ago, when I decided to install Linux, I resized my old 74 GB NTFS partition to a 64 GB partition for 10 GB to be available for Linux. Now, I have been having problems with Windows XP when I leave standby (or hibernate), the computer locks up at the "Unlock Computer" screen (I…

Hi all, Today I've noticed some strange problem, and the more I look at it the more I'm getting convinced that something is *very* wrong with my system. It started when I ran ipconfig from a command prompt: "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." In other word, it couldn't find the ipconfig.exe. Sure enough, it was in the system32 folder. I managed to run it from there without any problem. I switched back to some other random folder, tried to run it again, and sure enough, it failed with the same message. 'set path' showed that %SystemRoot%\system32 is part of the search path. %System…

Have something strange going on with one of my USB ports. If a memory stick is inserted, the computer gives the normal double beep sound. However, the drive is not accessible, nor does it show up under device manager. When I remove the mem stick (it does not show up under safey remove hardware) the computer double sounds again. Now, if I look in device manager, a mass storage device is now present. iAlso through trial and error I have discovered that my 4-slot memory card reader works fine, until a mem stick is placed into this particiular USB port. If a mem card is in place, the active light turns off when the usb Mem stick is inserted. If the mem stick …

Hi all So this one beats me ... One of my programs is called Reference Manager and is used to make databases. For every new database, the programs makes two new files. And here is the problem, the files do exist, you can use them, you can see them in the browser window if you open them in the program itself, there are shortcuts in my recently used files pointing to the destination of where the files should be, but the actual files themselves are no where to be found with windows explorer. They are no hidden files, I've checked and I'm administrator of my machine (running Windows Vista Home Premium). I need back-ups of these files but that's rather har…

Never ran disk checker before but read that it was good to do this every few weeks so decided to try it. noticed advisory that it took several hours so when I quit work I started the thing up, I selected my drive C: checked “Check file System†and “Check & Repair Disk Errors,†rebooted, left the computer running & went home. Came back next morning, computer was still running, screen showed “Checking file System on C:†and “The type of file system is NTFS.†Didn’t show any thing else. I saw there was no way to exit this screen so used the power button to turn off. When I rebooted it returned to the same screen, with another message: “A…

I suspected the search engine was trash when I 1st used it. Yesterday actually confirmed it. I repeated a search I'd done weeks earlier in the same folders. Since that 1st search, I'd removed much of the stuff since it was simply a processing folder I used for organization prior to burning to a DVD, then deleting from the HD permanently. yesterday, I searched again, and it came up with the exact same name and a thumbnail from the original movie clip. When I tried to open it from the search, WMP said there was an error. When I used 'go to folder', the folder was empty. When I tried to delete it from the search, then it said the file no longer exists... Duh!!…
