I have lost the ability to see my usb memory key when I am logged in under my network ID. If I log into the machine only I can see it. I believe it may have something to do with norton internet security. I have removed the program but I still can not see the key. Is there something that could affect one profile but not another?

When I run Microsoft Quick Basic V4.5 (a DOS application) from within Windows XP (not under a DOS prompt screen) my CPU usage goes to 100% (viewed with Windows Task Manager - performance tab) and the fan runs almost continuously in my Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. Any other open Windows applications are EXTREMELY sluggish. Just shutting down Quick Basic returns CPU usage to the 5-20% range, the fan runs with a normal 25% duty cycle, and the other open applications act at normal speed. Is the DOS application really the problem or is that just an illusion? Paul Rumbaugh

I have ~30,000 users who's home drives we're going to migrate to a central location? I'm trying to determine how best to layout these folders. Ideally I would like to simply use \\server\share\%username%, but that would create a folder with 30,000 folders in it. That seems like it would be hard to manage, and might not be a good idea. Other idea's I've had is to do \\server\share\%firstInitial%\%username% but that makes scripting a little tougher. Any other ideas? Steve

I'm trying to use repadmin /showmeta or repadmin /showobjmeta with GUID for a user account. I was able to run the command with DN for the user account. Here is my syntax: repadmin /showmeta GUID=D416D85C-D0D6-EC47-9189-13B83674F3C1 dc1.xxxx.com with /showobjmeta the error is DSA object could not be found. Is my syntax wrong? I found the GUID (objectGUID) via ADSI. Can someone help? It's not deleted user account. Thanks.

Hi, I have a couple of programs I need to run at startup. However, they keep getting blocked every time I run. And when I allow them to run another warning comes up before I am able to have them run. How do a "whitelist" programs so that they can run at start-up? I have other programs that runs without warnings, so it must be possible to set this. I do not want to turn off UAC, but I will have to unless I find a way to run these programs without problems like I did in XP. -- //ceed

I don't know when this happened, but I just noticed that in my control panels to add/delete, there are only 5 programs in there, where under programs I have 30 programs. I used to have them all in control panel and I have no idea when or what happened to them. I don't remember changing any settings either. Windows xp

I sent this email to Microsoft. Any solutions? I doubt it. Just when do you know when the computer is ready to work with after startup when the hour glass comes on and goes off continuously. Is it the first time, the second time or the third time the hour glass goes off? Don't you think this is not too smart?? I wait and wait and wait for the hour glass to go away, thinking that this is it. Know I can click on something and get started working, but NO, the hour glass came on again, it is still loading something. I have to wait for I don't know how long before it goes away and may come back up again. I have worked with a MAC for years and when all th…

I am trying to duplicate the following UNIX command in Windows XP DOS mode: set WFHM_DATE=`perl Calc_Prior_Work_Date.pl` which would set the WFHM_DATE to the value of 20070703 (when run on July 5th, 2007). I am running a third party software package that supports a DOS mode which is the only place I can manipulate the environment variables on-the-fly. I have tried doing 'perl Calc_Prior_Work_Date.pl | set WFHM_DATE='. It did not work. Any ideas? Dennis

Hi, Whenever my screensaver kicks in on resume I'm prompted for a password to unlock the PC. All fine you may say but the checbox that asks for a password on resume is UN-checked i.e. it shouldn't be asking for a password. Ive tried the obvious like checking the box and then un-checking again but the behavour persists. How can I stop this irritating feature. Mike

I am currently running windows XP service pack 2 and internet explorer 7. Recently i noticed that when i clean out my cache, delete temporary files works and delete cookies works, but delete browsing history just runs and runs forever never completeing. I can remove it via cc cleaner, but i cant seem to fix IE 7's problem. Does anyone know of a solution to fix this problem in explorer? Is there something i can change in the registry or in safe mode to fix this? -- jjdonohue ------------------------------------------------------------------------ jjdonohue's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=27573 View this thread: http://forums.te…

I play several online games. In order for the games to update patches I need to be able to access their ftp server. I get an FTP connection error! Please check the internet line connection. If I disable my windows xp firewall I can connect without a problem, but then I end up playing the game with no firewall which makes me nervous. I have added the associated files to the firewall exceptions, also added the correct ports to the exceptions. In internet tools I have unchecked the passive ftp, and also tried it while checked. Nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I re-flashed the bios in my SiL 3112 SATA hard disk controller so as to give me RAID capability. Unfortunately I stupidly omited to install the corresponding Windows device driver beforehand, and now my installation of Windows XP SP2 won't boot. It gets as far as the first (dim) Windows Logo but then just restarts. Is there a way of persuading it to install another disk driver at this early stage of the boot process or am I stuck ? I really don't want to perform another repair install atm. Many thanks, Mike

When In want to save an animated picture and I go to "save picture as" the only thing that shows up is bmp. Why doesn't it list all of the conversions...I think I need a gif to maintain the animation because now it looses all the animation that goes with the tag I'm downloading. I have infanview and since I cleaned my computer of some of my programs, the only thing that I can convert to is bmp and very rarely gif shows up. Thanx
