I've been dealing with windows xp that crash a lot....until the point where i've figured out the hard drive is at fault and i have replaced it. But i need to get some files off the old hard drive, not many just one program and some backups. at the moment when i boot up the old hard drive it only goes to the xp start screen and goes black. i've tried the system recovery disk and have got as far as the command prompt for which windows and admin password, what are my options to enter here? is there a default admin password as it was not me who set up the computer? any help would be great. -- thanks, sean

Hi. I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I could use some help. I'm trying to transfer files from a nine year old laptop that has serial and parallel ports but no Ethernet or USB ports, to a more recent computer that has parallel and USB ports but no serial port. What kind of cable do I need using which ports on each computer in order to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard? -- Thanks, YN

If all folders are sub-directories of 'My Computer' and you open 'my computer' to access these folders, then why is 'My Documents' displayed separately above 'my computer' when I run Internet Explorer. One would think you would have to open 'My Computer' to get to 'my documents'. I was recently asked this question but had no answer to it. Mac53

Fixed ???? I think Explorer 7 is the culprit. Have re-installed with download program on hard disk after complete un-instal. It was very slow to load. It wasn't until I had a complete reinstal that it worked to allow manual updates and number disappeared. Repair program tries did not work. I now have another problem in that E7 has slowed my computer and it is leaving a problem on closing. It has to close automatically but now needs a button push. "Access violation at address 02050200 in module iesdsg.dll Read of address 25202E67" Some research has shown it to be Spyware Doctor. I am yet to confirm this. "Rick G." wrote: > I'm getting thi…

I have a Dell inspiron 6400 laptop with vista ultimate installed and when ever I play a movie windows turns off the screen after 20 minutes (that's the time I told windows to turn the screen off when idle). In the power management I chose to prevent idle sleep while sharing media but windows still turns off the screen. Is there any way to prevent this while I watch videos?

I want to use XXCLONE to make a recovery fast and easy the last one took 14 hours to get everything back XXCLONE would only require drive swap and then clean the old one, BUT WGA will see image from XXCLONE as a fake and kill updates and label me a thief. When does microsoft feel a real working recovery system will be provided us.

I have a problem where the detail pane in Vista explorer does not always display the album art next to the item and displays the MP3 picture. It strange because if I go into an album folder some of the items will have the correct pictures and others won't. All of the art is in Media Player. Any ideas? Thanks

Earlyer this year I upgraded from Windows XP SP2 to Windows Vista Home Basic. Before i inserted the upgrade disc I had 110GB free disc space left from a hard disc of 160GB in total. After putting in the upgrade vista disc in and it taking several hours to upgrade to windows Vista home basic I checked the space left on my hard disc and it said I had 92GB of free disc space left. That ment I have lost a total of 18GB of disc space. I am wondering where has this 18GB of free disc space gone to and how i can get it back on my computer. Because of the limitations of Vista Home basic I am going to upgrade to Windows Vista Premium after upgrade of g…

How can I set a default view for Windows Explorer? It seems that each folder gets a differet view style depending on its contents. Like ... if a folder has lots of .mp3 files, it will show details for mp3 files, pictures are shown as thumbnails and so on. But I don't want that. I want file details no matter what folder contents. Tried set APPLY TO ALL FODERS in folder's options, but it doesn't work.

I have set up Access Manager on my computer to limit what programs can/cannot be opened on my User Account so that people who use the computer cannot play around with two many things and to minimize virus opening up. In Access Manager, you have select every program file to allow it to work. Now, I have a problem in that when I click on hyperlinks in a Word document or an Outlook file, I cannot open the link. This is because I have not allowed, in Access Manager, the program file that makes hyperlinks work between programs. So, I am looking for the name of the file that must be burried in Windows that actually allows the computer to open hyperlinks with…

I have the following problem: All computers at our company, both XP and Vista, get the following message in Internet Explorer: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. After refreshing a bit, I might get lucky and the web-page suddenly appears again. The problem also appears in Mozilla Firefox. I found another post on the net concerning this problem: http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1324029&page=9 , however there is no resolution. I've now tried for weeks to get into this problem. The problem also happens to new untouched computers, straight from HP. So there's not a Antivirus/domain settings issue. I've tried to ping sites consta…

I have little knowledge of Windows 2003 or Active Directory so please bare with me. I have a Windows 2003 server connected on a LAN that also has a Domain Controller. Something happened a few days ago (don't know what) and it is no longer possible to access the server over a network. The guy who owns the system played around with Active Directory on the Domain Controller to see if he could get things working again but to no avail. After digging around, I discovered that there is a local policy on the server that is called "Access This Computer From The Network". It has only two entries in the list and neither of these are the defaults. In fact, not even adm…

My taskbar has started disappearing. That's the entire taskbar: Start button, quick launch icons, buttons for running programs, system tray. The desktop wallpaper shows beneath the open window. After a few minutes, it comes back. Any idea why this happens?

I have the following directory on my computer that is using approximately 50% of my hard drive: C:\Users\(name)\app\roaming The folder continues to get larger and if I delete the contents the next day it is back and at the same size. Other users in my area, including my personal notebook, and desktop also have this directory, but it is less than 5GB total at any point. I hope someone can help determine what the directory is for and how can I limit it's size. -- Barry Puckett

Hi, We have a PC (Dual Core with 2GB RAM) that is running XP SP2 and have Windows installed on one HD and the applications installed on another HD. When we try to access the Add/Remove Programs via the Control Panel it can take several minutes for the list to open. Show Windows Updates option is turned off. Yours David
