My DVD RW drive loads by default as E:, the lowest available letter. I want to use E: for something else, so I assigned it the letter Z: using Administrative Tools. But on reboot it reverts to E:. A virtual drive created by the InstantWrite software has the same problem, i.e. I cannot permanently reassign the drive letter, but another DVD drive which was earlier assigned to Y: is still Y:. I can successfully reassign the drive letters of the various hard disk partitions. They do not revert on reboot. I have just reinstalled my whole system. I had the problem before reinstallation, but as far as I can recall it was not there at first in the new installation…

Today when turning on my PC - I was greeted with a "Disk Read Error - press ctrl - alt - del to restart." message. My PC has been running great - up to today. I'm thankful I thought to make a NT Boot floppy a while back just for stupid things like this happening. Anyway, I typed in the error and found a KB article relating to using older versions of Windows (multi boot) with Windows Vista. They recommend correctly re-installing the older OS. My problem however, is I'm running Windows XP SP2. Theres no Vista installed on my System, and I've had no problems starting up until today.

Hi, I am currently running Windows 2003 in a single domain with two DC's at one location with another location authenicating over the WAN to the two DC's. I am planning on setting up another DC at the offsite location for authentication. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything when setting this up so here are my plans: Setting up two sites -Building A with a special subnet -Building B with a special subnet - Connecting these through a site link and setting the servers in each. I will have two DC's so I will put a GC at each location. Also installing DNS on all the DC's. The part where I am confused is the DNS is it smart to put DNS on all …

Hi I know this sounds like a stupid observation but every time I open a folder in Vista it seems the layout is completely random. For example, I opened my crystal reports patch folder and it displays large icons, and column headers that say email, business phone, home phone..... What made vista decide that there were email contacts in the patch folder? I mean its full of .bat, .dll & .exe files. Sometimes it shows my photos in detail list when I want the large icons I had last time. If I must I will be happy to set each folder up but there has got to be a better way. Can I universally set them so they are in detail view? thanks

Related to post WinXP Pro repair-install. Security update installation failed. The reported error code was 0x80080008 MS's techsupport self help does not contain a relevant entry...there was 0x80070002 and ---70003, that was the closest match. What is the definition of errcod 0x80080008? and what may be its solutions?

Allego qua sotto i…

Every time Windows (XP Pro) tries to start up, ChkDisk cuts in with a suspect disk problem. It never finds a problem but, if I don't stop it, it will loop all day without ever starting Windows but perpetually running ChkDisk. How can I stop this startup problem occurring, starting with the premise that I do not have a faulty disk. Thanks, Mike.

Noticed the other day when trying to manually run Windows Update on one of my 2003 SP1 servers that the link to Windows Update on the Start Menu no longer works - does nothing when clicked. So I opened IE and went to the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site and selected custom to run it. It sat there scanning for ever and ever and after about 3 hours I cancelled it. Have tried server reboots etc. and cannot get this to run. Every time I try it just sits there scanning and nothing else. Any ideas what I can do to get this working again? Thanks

Hello, I was thinking this would be a no-brainer, but here we go again... I follow the import wizard, point to the folder that has all of my old .dbx folders, and nothing is found. Do they have to be exported to .csv 's or something? Thanks, in advance. smackedass
