I'm using XP Home, SP2 on a new computer. When I try to install a USB device it works correctly, but afterwards I can't reboot. What happens is this: When I plug in a USB device, windows detects the new hardware, installs the driver, and everything seems to work just fine. With a USB printer, I can print correctly, with the USB monitor for my UPS, I can read the UPS status as I should. Everything is fine until I restart Windows. Then it hangs at the XP splash screen (the one with the blue dots moving across the screen below the XP logo.) If I boot to safe mode and use System Restore to go back to before I added the device, the system is ok again, but t…

What's the best synchronization software? Hi all, I have a working directory at work on my office PC. And I some times do work at home at my home PC. And I also keep a copy on my laptop. Due to company policies, I have to use USB drive to copy and paste from one computer to another. I keep adding/deleting/modifying files on these three computers and the directories are now a mess. I lost track about which PC keeps which version of my work and when the files get more and more the whole situation becomes a nightmare. Could anybody recommend a good and effective sync software to handle these things, esp. the sync through the USB drive? I assume the sof…

I have written before, but things are getting worse. I said there were only a few things in my control panel>add/remove. My firefox will hardly work at all, even the main page won't open. I went into control panel to try and delete it and find I cannot delete anything on that add/remove page. I don't know what is wrong with this laptop. Is there a way to diagnose it myself, or do I have to take it in to someone? Thanks.

Windows Explorer says: "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq. Access is Denied" Why should be doing this? And how to resolve without using System Restore???

Hi I currently have a terminal server licensing server issue. I have one server in my domain hosting the terminal server licensing service. This server is also a DC and runs 2003 R2. I currently have valid purchased licenses registered. All of it has been handed out and now I am handing out temp licenses for the 2003 products. I now have this issues where a machine got a temp license. The license has expired and in my management console it shows that the license expired on the 5 of June 2007. Now this machine cannot work, because the server is not handing out a new temp license to this client machine. I have restarted the server services. Rebuilt the c…

I bought a used computer - it's a Dell Dimension 3000 Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 version 5.1.2600. I've installed all critical high priority updates successfully. I installed the Adobe flash player 9 and it shows it's an installed program in the add/remove programs list but i can't access it and when I go to test players page it says I need latest flash player installed and javascript enabled. I'm still learning how to "talk" to this machine. Can anybody help computer dummy grandma? Thank you for any assistance you can give me. Sharon

I have at various stages copied cd's on to my pc. In trying to delete some of these albums I am now encountering a problem. When I right click on a folder to delete it and all the tracks within it I am getting an error message: "cannot delete folder. it is being used by another person or program. close any programs that might be using the file and try again." I have tried deleting the albums via media player - 'remove from library and computer' - and for some albums this has worked - I have then been able to go to 'my music' in My documents and delete the empty folders, but for others this still won't work. Please can anyone help me out? -- frustrated with P…

This may not pertain to Windows directly, but since Internet Explorer 7 runs under Windows, I'll give it a try: Whenever I need to print out pages from the internet, I go to "File", "Print" or "Print Preview." Unfortunately, on very many occasions when I click either of these choices, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 shuts down completely, and a small new windom asks if I want to forward the problem to Microsoft. I have done so many times with no resolution. That is where matters stand right now. Has anyone any idea of what to do about this glitch? Thank you. ragmaniac.

My laptop runs Vista Home Premium, I installed a windows update yesterday and now my DVD drive no longer works. I checked my device manager and the DVD drive is no longer there. I tried to restore my computer and it crashed. I was unable to restart correctly until I set it to restore to an even earlier restore point. Even then it still didn't solve the problem with my DVD drive.

I plugged in an old USB scanner and up came the "Open with....." dialogue box. Without thinking I chose Photoshop AND "Always perform this action....." Then realised I might want to save to Word or Irfanview. Can't seem to find a way to "Undo" the Photoshop option. Tried right-clicking on the scanner icon in My Computer but am not seeing any "Opens with..." setting to change. How do I get XP to ask what programme to open with again?

No contest here, I have just bought 2 Laptops from Dell, I chose one to have Vista Home Premium, and the Other to have Windows XP Home. Both Laptops are identical in terms of hardware, Duo CPU, 2meg Ram, 80gb HDD. All junk software on the Laptops was removed, and MS Office XP installed on both. The difference in performance is just amazing. Examples: Vista Laptop from cold start to accessing IE Home page = 3mins 5 secs on Ave XP Laptop from cold start to accessing IE Home page = 50secs on ave Installing MS office on Vista Laptop = 8 mins Installing MS Office on XP = 4min 15 sec. …

I am using Win XP professional edition. I used to send pictures, and resize them, from Windows Explorer (selecting the pictures, File, Send To, Mail Recipient). I always then got the options to resize them (make files smaller), or not. Now, all of a sudden, this does not work anymore. Yes, I can still send them, but only in the original size. How come? TIA Roger.
