Hi, something l would like to do is disable UAC (user account control) for a subset of options in Vista. For instance, I'm always selecting "Show processes for all users" on the Windows Task Manager, so it's annoying for me to have it enabled here. However, UAC is useful enough of a safety net that I wouldn't want to completely disable it. (It has saved me a couple times already from malware). Does anybody know how to disable UAC in a limited number of instances like this? If not, do you know if Microsoft has any plans to implement a feature or option like this in future versions? For instance, where it says, "Windows needs your permission to continue" if there…

When I right click on my desktop to create "new" among other things I get items that have long since been deleted. My computer came with WordPerfect Productivity Suite preinstalled. WordPerfect itself never did run with integrity. But I retained Quattro Pro because it did. But now I have WordPerfect and Corel Presentation on the list. Where is the repository for this handler? How can I edit it to remove the items that are no longer valid? Thanks.

After the email was sent her picture was no longer a thumbnail it changed to an Icon and I cant get it to go back to a thumbnail. The file name remains the same except for .jpeg is now at the end of the file name. Thanks for the help Steve

Hi! I have a Dell xps gen 4 3.46 ghz 3 gig memory Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX raid 0 made of two 250gig drives. I've upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate. I have defraged, chkdsk, and made sure all drivers were updated. The Windows experience index shows 2.5 because of the primary drive (disk data transfer rate). My pc now is EXTREMELY slow. It seems to be the disk drives which I've never had a problem with. Does anyone have a suggestion or idea as to why the performance may be so bad? Is there an issue with Vista and Raid 0? Any help would very much appreciated!!!!! Thanks Bill

I'm getting very confused about how prefetch works. If it profiles each application and pre-loads pages, then I use a third-party defrag tool (Diskkeeper 10 in my case) isn't that going to stuff things up? That is, the applications are getting moved around on the platters, so the .pf files will be referring to things that aren't there anymore. I suppose the question is, do third party defraggers interfere with prefetch? Rob

I made a big mistake. I could not go online after an "Unmountable Boot Volume" error message. I was then unable to run the Recovery Console per the advice. I reinstalled the Windows XP Startup Disk per other advice. repartitioning what I thought was free disk space. Windows reinstalled, but now I have lost all my files--all of them. Can I recover? -- Bill in California

Hi all, My PC is down. The symptom is, after the PC is powered on, the harddisk light is on and still but there is no monitor signal at all. It does not detect the processor and memory. Therefore, I expect that my PC fails at POST stage. Any suggestion? Which part failure will cause this problem? VGA card? Thanks

I have recently returned to using Outlook Express 6 after spending the past 3 months evaluating Thunderbird. A problem has arisen in deleting unwanted messages from OE. On about a third of all incoming messages I am unable to delete them after reading and no matter what I do in adjusting settings, I have failed to correct this. Have searched Microsoft’s help pages for a remedy without success. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I have recently begun to have problems with my computer with Windows XP Pro SP2 freezing and failing to shut down. Initially I thought it was my power supply failing but have now found the source of the problem - my second SATAII HDD . I can access the drive, read information, burn DVDs from the files etc in Safe Mode, but when I boot normally in WinXP the computer starts playing up and will freeze when trying to access the said drive. How can I go about fixing this issue? Manufacturer diagnostic software has determined the drive is free of errors. Thanks in advance, Nick

I have a laptop set up with XPpro and Vista Ultimate in dual boot. ( I need XPp for productivity while I get used to Vista and Office 07 ) ....anyhooo. Vista mail ( I think) started throwing a wobbly with Vista popping up messages that one of the files were corrupt and needing to run chkdsk. Well after an hour it was racing through a list of files all in E:\$security all corrupt and requiring chkdsk run. - OK so I scheduled a chkdsk. On re-boot the Vista partition wouldn't boot saying the Hardware had changed ( untrue ) and needing a repair build. OK... booted to the XPpro part and chkdsk ran on the Vista (E:\) partition deleting heaps, including index…

Dear kind folks: I can't get into many of my folders, receiving a runtime error message with the window being closed by my PC each time I try to access them. I have Windows XP if that makes a difference. Just now I was trying to open the Fonts folder in order to delete some of the fonts there that I don't use and each time I tried to open it I received the following error message prior to the system forcing the window to close each time I tried to open the folder: "Runtime Error!" on the first line, then, on the second line the message is "Program; C\WINDOWS\explorer.exe." On the third line it reads, "abnormal program termination." At the very top of the mess…

The task manager shows under the performance tab around 670 MB RAM usage (on a 2gb computer), now I looked around in the processes tab, clicked on the "show processes of all users" thingy, and looked how much the processes take RAM. I added the usage of all the 45 processes together, and they eat around 220 MB RAM up. Why the big difference to the RAM Usage of the performance tab, and the sum of the RAM usage of the processes in the processes tab? How much do the processes really take? It can't be the cache, or? Because the cache usage is shown in the performance tab too, under "physical memory", and there is the cache usage 1524 mb of 2029 mb, 51 mb is fr…
