Greetings, Hope this message finds each of you well. When trying to re-install Win XP SP2 and attempting to "upgrade" to Win XP SP2 from Win XP SP2(as a means of trying to repair Win XP SP2 components I get a missing "viamraid.sys" error saying that the setup of Win XP will no terminate. After installing several programs I've found that the screen-saver, and power-downs/shut-offs no longer work, and I'm having a difficult time traking down the cause. It seems certain that there is something running in the background, but what? My computer is a SystemMax AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core Proc. 4200+, 2.21 GHz with 3.0 GB of RAM I've installed the following: Cy…

I have in one of my partitions Windows XP + SP2. I don't have accessing problems such as "sharing violation", etc., since I can access the WXP partition from another Windows partition. But it seems that most .LOG files are not simple text formatted. So are there tools to access all those files? Thanks, David

Suppose one detects that keylogging software is on a PC. Is there someway to discover who is recording it, that is, the "listener"? -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

I have a user whose computer was getting really slow. I cleaned up the tmp files and cleared the cache and history. Nothing unusual in her Startup folder. Looked in Control Panel within Add/Remove Programs. Has approximately 60 items showing, 10 which are valid names. The rest make no sense to me [ESSini, SFR, to name a few]. I know that she has other applications on there that are working, but they don't show up in Control Panel by their correct name. There is no Change/Remove buttons for any of these either. I thought about cleaning up the registry but am afraid that these are just aliases and that if I do delete one, an actual legitimate program will be uninsta…

Hi everyone. First, I want you to excuse me for my English. I have my XP from an original Windows cd. As you know, when you install it for the first time, you have 30 days to activate via Internet or by phone. In my case, I could activate automatically by the Internet the first 5 times (due to my job, sometime I have to format and reinstal my Windows more than a regular user do usually). After the 5th time, I have to call Microsoft to activate it. The problem in my case is that Microsoft has no representation in my country, so I cannot call it (but a friend, who has it, helps me). A couple of days ago, I found a procedure in a magazine to restore XP activation. …

I am using XP Pro SP2 with all updates. I have the Powertoy "Calculator Plus" installed. It worked fine. I installed a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and now the calculator will work and then just stop working. In other words, I will start performing calculations and then it will quit responding to keystrokes or mouse clicks. I don't know that this is related to the keyboard but Any ideas? The standard calculator with Windows still works fine. Bob

Hi Guys, You are guys are so good at all my questions, so I thought I would drive this one past you.... I recently did a system recovery--non destructive--and I can't seem to get into Microsoft Word or any of the office programs.... I see the shortcut to them, but they don't open. "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed." I never un-installed them, I thought the came with Windows XP anyway. No, as usual, this computer was given to me, and no, I don't have the Windows XP discs, which I have never seen in anyone's possession. What should I do? Do you guys have a link on the Microsoft Download site that I can redownload Mic…

I recently installed a bunch of Windows updates. After I did this, my notebook wouldn't completely shut down when I went into Standy Mode. The monitor shuts off, but the hard drive doesn't turn off. Any idea what to do?

I'm one of the unhappy lot that have recently found that no matter what we try the updates which we download (automatically or otherwise) are not installing onto the PC. I've read all the comments in the forum relevant to this issue, and although there seems to be some people out there that appear to have positive results in fixing the issue, I am still unable to do so. Therefore, could someone please explain to me ( preferably in simple terms ) why all of a sudden this issue has manifested itself ? Many thanks in anticipation.

I recently resolved some sound choppiness with Windows Media Player 11 for the Vista Basic operating system. However, within several days of its resolution, my computer ceased to play sound altogether (with the exception of "angry" beeps when I am doing something it doesn't like). My sound card was previously in use, and now no longer issues sound. On the Start Task bar on the bottom right of the screen, there appears a little speaker icon with a little white "X" surrounded in red, and when scrolled over indicates that "The Audio Service is not running." I am unsure as to how to resolve this. When this previously happened when I re-emerged from hibernation…

After running a registry repair script to fix a problem with missing icons in a specific user account, I'm running into another problem with logging in. The fix I applied involved running subinacl. http://winonline.blogspot.com/2005/11/reset-entire-registry-permissions-to.html (thanks so much for posting that, Ramesh!). Now, this user cannot log on unless he is a member of the local admin group. If he is only a member of the local user group explorer does not load when he logs on. I can hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager, and there are several services running, but explorer will not load. Once I join his domain account to local admin, though, h…
