Just wanted to say I really like my vista. Since I have installed it, all my hardware works. No crashes, no problems at all. Just wanted to let people know there are thousands and thousands of us who use Vista every day and have little if any problems at all with it. The only trick to any OS is making sure you have the correct drivers for what ever OS you are running. If you do that you will have no problems at all. I'm sure that usual trolls will now attack.

I bought a new Gateway Laptop with Vista Home Premium already loaded. If I had a choice, I would never have Vista on this computer and if there was anyway to get it off and back to Windows XP Home Addition, I would if it didn't cost me an arm and leg. I am a novice and Vista appears to be for computer guru's. also I can't even fax from this program. I have written to Gateway suggesting they give you a choice. The largest school system in my state will not load Vista on our computers and I understand why. Any suggestions how to fax from this OS since it was included in XP. -- gl

I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4 processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space. The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME). A month ago, I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner. Recently, my "starter" yellow-ink cartridge ran out of ink, and one other cartridge is about to do the same. At the Best Buy store where I bought the printer, Brother cartridges are sold for $13.50 each. I believe that these are the LC51B, LC51Y, LC51C, and LC51M cartridges. Well, I have discovered the website known as http://www.ink4less.com This …

(from http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Entertainment/2007/12/30/recording_industry_ups_ante_for_downloads/1429/) "Recording industry ups ante for downloads Published: Dec. 30, 2007 at 3:29 PM SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. recording industry has intensified its fight against illicit downloading, saying it is illegal for someone to transfer music from a CD onto a computer. As part of the industry's ongoing legal effort against Jeffery Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., resident accused of sharing nearly 2,000 songs, industry officials said even legally owned discs should not be copied onto one's computer, The Washington Post reported Sunday. …

'Just visited a site call www shapeofdays com which says it does a demonstration of the upcoming new flash player. I added it to my Trusted Zone [set to medium-high+ / protected mode ON as I have otherwise scripts off] refreshed, clicked on the area for the video and IE7 froze. Concerned, I ran a virus scan [ClamWin] C:\Program Files\microsoft shared\VBA\VBA6\VBE6.DLL: Virut.set1.08 FOUND It opens a backdoor. I guess I'm "owned" ?? TG my backup USB drive is powered off. *Sigh* Saucy

Some people say that Ubuntu is as easy as putting the DVD in the drive and just installing it. Once Ubuntu is up, everthing "just works". One of the reasons that many people think that Ubuntu/Linux sucks is because even though Ubuntu has made many strides and has a graphical interface. You still need to enter line commands. For instance, the following article talks about the lack of DVD support on the default media player. If you didn't read the article, how would you know that you would need to open a terminal window and enter the following commands: sudo apt-get install libdvdread3sudo apt-get install libdvdread3 After you enter your password, U…

After a week of beating my head against the green/blue wall (my monitor screen)... I give up. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not one of the techies who has the wisdom to upgrade from one version of windows to another. No, I'm just an average Shmo who got his computer fresh out of the box and said to himself: "Geeeee... it's got one of them Vista thingies. Wow!" That's where my excitement ended. The computer (a brand new HP) is for my kids. Of the 5 (count them FIVE!) kiddie programs I tried to load, 4 (count them FOUR!!!) return error messages either upon attempts at installation or once they were (supposedly) installed. [by the way, all of them installed j…

Had to upgrade to a new PC, and most every new PC comes with Vista pre-installed, no options for XP. I try hooking up my 2 year old scanner - no Vista driver. I try hooking up a webcam a friend gave me - no Vista driver So the whole purpose of upgrading to Vista was so I could go out and buy all new hardware!! This will be my last PC with a microsoft OS.

I seem to have the only perfect copy of Vista Home Premium in this sector of the Milky Way. It's fast, efficient, safe, and reliable, and is fully compatible with everything that ran under XP. In four months I have not crashed even once!! That means I'm missing out on all the fun of complaining and sharing the Gates Hates. What can I do to trigger some blue screens and get on the anger bandwagon? Help me break this Vista installation so I can shift to Ubuntu and give up half the functionality of my laptop... Silvy

well well, whaddayaknow... http://vistasucks.wordpress.com/2007/12/26/us-army-were-switching-to-macs/ Wallington, a division chief in the Army's office of enterprise information systems, says the military is quietly working to integrate Macintosh computers into its systems to make them harder to hack. That's because fewer attacks have been designed to infiltrate Mac computers, and adding more Macs to the military's computer mix makes it tougher to destabilize a group of military computers with a single attack, Wallington says. now you KNOW that if the U.S. military is considering switching to macs M$ must be in trouble... this is truly music to my ears...…

Before spending money on Vista I thought I'd see if I can't obtain a disk from someone I know and give it a test run. Turns out someone I know had a disk and let me borrow it. I figured, the 30 day trial is plenty of time for me to figure out if I need to actually spend any money on this. Man, am I glad I did this prior to spending money. I have to say, I actually did say "Wow.......this is pathetic." But hey, at least I had Wow in the sentence right? Results: - Sound does not work out of the box, though this has got to be the first time I actually have seen the online driver search function work and find a driver. So it worked after that...fair enough. …

I'm hoping this can be an intelligent debate about Microsoft's marketing, without it being overrun by the usual bunch of offensive kids and anti-Vista trolls. OK then....... One of the things Microsoft wants to do is stop selling new XP licenses and sell Vista licenses instead. I believe the current target for stopping sales of XP is next month. I vaguely understand they have support cut-off dates for XP of 2009 and 2014 (I may be wrong about those - but that isn't central to my argument). The thing is, why is MS to keen to stop selling XP? I've heard a couple of reasons: 1/ They have to get a return on their investment in the development of V…

I have let Vista do this hardrive thrashing for many many months now. I have had it and can no longer take it. I read that it should have stopped after awhile but it has not. I just started tweaking to try and make it stop. I cannot find what is causing the hard drive thrashing or what is holding me up. I have to wait my turn just to do the basic computer stuff, why ? All of this background running around vista does is not helpful to me. Can you make a stripped down expert version for gamers ? You have so many vista versions already, what is one more? Make it so that does not have all of this background bs running, indexing, cacheing and whatever you thin…

Well Catch 22 has been asking people who build to share photos, so I decided to share my new build mentioned in the last thread and some general photos of my working area. Sorry the builds are so dark, they didn't look that way in the camera. In the first shot you will notice a design affect in this Apevia case where the hard drive rack is too far out so that the stat cable and molex cable protrude preventing one from closing the case. I had to break the sliders and use 2/3 of them to be able to slide the second drive in and hold the case closed.
