Internet Explorer might not be open source, but Microsoft is trying to make its successor a little more flexible to third parties. The software giant is currently building Project Spartan, a new browser that will succeed Internet Explorer in Windows 10. As part of the company’s work, it’s partnering with "major Web entities" to help improve its web platform. This is a first for Microsoft, and it means that companies outside of Redmond will be able to contribute code to Project Spartan. Adobe is the first of many to improve Project Spartan Microsoft is planning to detail its various partnerships in the coming months, starting with Adobe this week. "In the past, it…

Thought Windows 10 wouldn't arrive till October? Think again. You won't have long to wait to get rid of 8—because the operating system you deserve is coming this summer instead. In an official blog post that nearly glosses over this extremely refreshing news tidbit, Microsoft's operating system chief Terry Myerson wrote this: "We continue to make great development progress and shared today that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages." In case you hadn't heard, Windows 10 is going to be a free upgrade for the first year. Windows 10 Is a Free Upgrade for the First Year Windows 10 Is a Free Upgrade for the First Year Windo…

Hi, I am not especially asking for help but would like to share my experience relating to the following. I have four security updates that have reappeared for downloading and installing a few times since the March 2015 Patch Tuesday. they are KB3031432 and KB3004375 (both classed as security updates for Windows 7) and KB3032359 and KB3021952 (which are classed as Cumulative security updates for Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 7). I soon established a link between the reappearances and my use of the Windows Disk Cleanup facility. This was confirmed when I searched online and found many reports relating to the four updates and the use of Windows Disk Cleanup. It a…

Hey guys, this person's Asus laptop running win7 developed a HDD problem and won't go to windows, he wants to recover some data on the drive, I used Parted Magic to access the drive but strangest thing, I am seeing the folder on the ROOT drive in parted magic but every folder showing is empty, it's as if someone deliberately emptied every folder. I tried attaching the drive as a slave to my machine, I can see the Disk F in My Computer but it doesn't open. The guy is asking me to create a partition on the drive to load an OS to try to recover the files that way, I told him if I partition the drive, that partition may overwrite some files so that's a risk but he is thinking…

Microsoft Internet Explorer, a browser familiar to many and loved by few, passed away today after a long illness. It was 19 years old. Bowing to the inevitable, Microsoft admitted today that it had decided to remove IE from life support. (IE will, however, continue to receive tech support through at least 2016.) IE is survived by Windows, Office, and the Microsoft Mouse. At its height, Internet Explorer — known unaffectionately as IE — dominated the Internet like no other software, accounting for 95 percent of all website visits. In recent times, however, IE’s popularity waned, thanks to the rise of powerful rivals and a long string of security mishaps. But ev…

Following the death of their young daughter, an Illinois family couldn’t bear the thought of following through with a long-planned spring break trip, so they asked American Airlines to refund the ticket purchased in their daughter’s name. While airlines have varying policies regarding refunds and deaths, the family says they were shocked when the airline refused the refund. NBC Chicago reports that the family applied for a refund through the airline’s online system after deciding that the planned vacation would be too painful just five months after their daughter’s death. But the family’s grief turned to disbelief earlier this week when American Airlines sent a fair…

I'm all for better stability and improved performance in the Windows operating systems, but I've always been fascinated with the icons. Chances are you are too. I know that we aren't alone; otherwise there wouldn't be such a plethora of software out there that revolves around creating, viewing, and using icons. Don't believe me? Just Google Icon Software. Now, we all know what icons are, but I love the succinctness of Wikipedia's description of a computer icon: "A computer icon is a pictogram displayed on a computer screen in order to help the user navigate a computer system or mobile device. The icon itself is a small picture or symbol serving as a quick, 'intuitiv…

We all knew this day would come. Late last year the rumors began about a new web browser coming from Microsoft that would be a big part of Windows 10. When Microsoft held their January event focused on the consumer features of Windows 10 this new web browser, Project Spartan, made its formal debut. As Paul wrote back in January both browsers will be around when Windows 10 releases but Internet Explorer will be focused for business and legacy applications compatibility while Project Spartan will be for consumers. Project Spartan is not the final name of Microsoft’s new browser but based on a report from The Verge’s Tom Warren earlier today that name will not be …

We recently researched how many potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) come with the 50 most popular applications on Download.com. Since the results were quite disturbing, we decided to look into the habits of other popular download portals to see if they are any better, or whether it’s better to avoid download portals altogether. Most of them claim to have “clean and safe downloads” and many portals express this on their website. However, trusting any download portal at all is becoming a difficult task for most people due to the rapid growth of bundled PUPs and the software reviews on the sites that often don’t seem objective. We looked into the ten most popular downloa…

The Evolution of Windows Icons As the Windows operating system has evolved, so too have many of its icons. As Windows 7 comes on to the scene with new user interface features, I recently began looking back at the changes in the icons that we all click on every day. While I discovered that many icons have changed with each new version of Windows, I also discovered that many stayed the same over several different versions. In this gallery, I’ll take a look at some of the Windows icons that have evolved over the years. Keep in mind that rather than show every icon for each version, I’ll only show an icon when it changes. For example, the Calculator icon chang…

Within the past 4 months my isp has been very slow. To counter any possible malware, i recently restored my computer to the factory default. The problems i still have are as follows; 1. Sometimes when i click a url i will get a message stating "Redirecting you to.........(whatever the name of the site). While waiting to be "Redirected" i will get another message "server not found". The above is intermittent. Sometimes everything is working ok but I get many "server not found" messages. 2. It takes a long time, (10 seconds or more) for a url to appear after i click it. 3. My present ISP speeds are; Ping: 94ms......Download Speed: 1.93 Mpbs........ Upload Speed: …

iOS/Web: When you can't get to a web site, you can check if it's down for everyone. If it's a web service like Facebook or an ISP, Downdetector gives you a status report. This information saves you time waiting on hold, thinking it's something with your computer or Internet connection. If it's a reported outage on Downdetector, there's no point in calling tech support. A big outage might also explain why you have long hold times on tech support. Free PC Help Forum is a old forum that was started in 2003 I believe. Free PC Help Forum had almost 7,000 members when the forum was discontinued. The members I see that log on every day registered in July of 2014. A couple of the old members have recently came back. Six of my friends have registered and they log on and comment regularly. Why aren't the old members coming back to Free PC Help Forum??It's has been up and going nearly 9 months sense ExTs started again. Why aren't we contacting the old members and inviting them to join us. Surely some of you know where they are. These are questions that IMHO are good questions. Do you have any ideas how we can grow just a …

Corporate America's profit engine may be running out of steam. Wall Street analysts, expecting two quarters of declining earnings, are banking on a second-half recovery to keep 2015 from becoming the worst year for profits since the last recession. If profit across the board comes in at 1.7 percent higher, 2015 would the worst year for companies in the S&P 500 index since 2009, when earnings fell 5.5 percent. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/13/us-usa-results-companies-idUSKBN0M915R20150313

Microsoft is planning to bring its Cortana digital assistant to iOS and Android as a standalone app. While the software maker has previously confirmed Cortana would come to additional operating systems, Reuters reports that the standalone app will be available on phones and tablets running iOS and Android.
