I have two Windows PC's both running Windows 8.1 - they both have an issue that apparently needs to be corrected with 'dism'. After doing the "SFC /scannow" repeatedly, they always find an error. I did: dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth then dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth and finally dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth After all this, on both machines, I get an error message "The source files could not be downloaded.", and then "Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/…

XP Pro. A few days ago I created an Unused Desktop Shortcuts folder. Works great. While accessing the folder today, a "toolbar" (?) suddenly appeared on the top of the screen. It reads: Unused Desktop Shortcuts, the names of 5 of the items in the shortcut folder, and finally, "Unused Desktop Shortcuts" (the latter provides access to all the items in the folder). How do I get rid of this toolbar? Any idea how it got there? When moving the icon, I wonder if I hit the top of the screen causing the toolbar to install ... Thanks!

During Build 2015 last week Microsoft announced that the browser we have known as Project Spartan in Windows 10 would be re-named Microsoft Edge. The name was revealed in a video played for keynote attendees and as you watch it it becomes very obvious early on what the new name will be. Although many would have liked to see the name Spartan stick around because of its Halo connection, similar to the name Cortana for Microsoft's digital personal assistant, Edge is a good name in my opinion. Many whom I spoke to at Build liked the name as well but the one element of the name change that might not be as well received is the new Microsoft Edge Logo. As you can see be…

Microsoft stripped out Aero Glass — a transparent and blurry glass effect — from Windows 8, but it looks like it’s making a slight return in Windows 10. Leaked screenshots from Chinese site IT Home reveal that the latest internal builds of Windows 10 include a new blurred transparency effect on the Start Menu. While this doesn’t extend to app windows themselves, the glass effect looks identical to the Aero Glass used in Windows Vista and Windows 7. It’s only applied to the Start Menu, and the transparency effect is removed when the Start Menu transforms into a fullscreen Start Screen. With just a day until Microsoft’s Build 2015 keynote…

Hey guys, person just brought this laptop to me running win7, claiming his wife says it freezes when online and a popup appears, I am waiting for his wife to call me to explain further as I am not seeing any of those issues, the net is working fine and no popup appears anytime, I can navigate around his system fine, laptop works fast and normal. What I am noticing is that it will not shut down using the start tab, also won't restart, it will only hibernate so only a hard shutdown is working. Also pressing ctrl+alt+delete is not bringing up the task manager, any ideas please?

As expected, Google has finally announced the details of its wireless smartphone service that will, at least at first, piggyback on the networks of Sprint and T-Mobile. It’s called Project Fi and plans with unlimited talk/text, unlimited international texting, and WiFi tethering will start at $30/month, with each gigabyte of data you use costing an additional $10. And if you don’t use your full allotment, your account gets credited accordingly. Google has details of the plans available here. In terms of pricing, there is currently only one base tier for phone/text, and that’s $20/month. Each gigabyte of data costs $10/month. So the lowest cost plan is $30/month …

Comment section of recent news article about the U.S. Internal Revenue Service: "If line 23 on Schedule L is greater than 51% of line 14 on schedule K copy the amount from line 23 to line 12 on schedule Q. If line 23 on Schedule L is less than 50% of line 14 on Schedule K copy the amount from line 23 to line 46 on schedule X. If line 23 on schedule L is equal to 50% of line 14 on Schedule K go back to the instructions for line 1 on Schedule G and start over. "Why should anyone need to call the IRS with such simple instructions?" :boohoo: So true! :help: That's the USA - what are your country's tax forms like?

If you've been following along, you know the last Build release of Windows 10 for phones didn't go well for some participants in the Windows Insider program. Some Lumia owners found their handsets would brick during the update. Many more found the latest release to be almost unusable, even if installed successfully. And, this is a bit disconcerting for the Windows Phone faithful, considering Microsoft is now rumored to release Windows 10 sometime in late July. To top it off, some (not all) Lumia 520/521 owners found that the Windows Phone Recovery Tool (WPRT), the actual application used to recover a failed Build installation or just to revert back to a supported Wi…

During WinHEC 2015 earlier this year Microsoft's Windows chief, Terry Myerson, revealed that Windows 10 would be released this summer although no tighter time frame was provided. Summer in the Northern Hemisphere lasts from 21 June to 23 September which makes for a very big launch window and a lot of speculation about the exact timing. Well one of Microsoft's OEM partners, AMD, may have inadvertently revealed the exact timing of the Windows 10 release date during their Q1 2015 earnings call last week. According to a transcript of that call over at Seeking Alpha, AMD's President and CEO Lisa Su was asked by an analyst from J.P. Morgan about the companies use of ch…

XP Pro, Firefox 37.0.1 Recently I was asked by FF if I wanted to install a better version of FF (or something like that). It wiped out my add-ons, including Ad Block. I'd like to re-install Ad Block. FF offers different versions. Is Flash Block 40.20.13 what I need? (It only has a 3-star rating.) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-block/?src=api' Or is Ads No More 2.1 better? (Also 3-star rating). https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ads-no-more/?src=api I'm sorry I ever "upgraded." Was satisfied with whatever it was I had.

Even though millions of Americans are on the federal Do Not Call list to limit unwanted telemarketing calls, and even though it’s illegal for anyone to make a commercial prerecorded robocall to a consumer who hasn’t given their express consent to receive such calls, the problem persists and is getting worse, with no cure-all solution in the offing. During a panel discussion on robocalling this morning at the Consumer Federation of America’s Consumer Assembly in D.C., the Federal Trade Commission’s Lois Greisman explained that the number of telemarketing complaints has been “skyrocketing” in recent years, with the FTC receiving anywhere from 250,000 to 300,000 compl…

Encrypted data can be recovered without paying the ransom A tool for reversing the encryption process of CoinVault crypto-malware is currently available for download, with new decryption keys being added as the investigation advances. CoinVault emerged in mid-November 2014 and it was the first malware of this kind to offer its victims the possibility of recovering some of the encrypted data, in an effort to show a sign of good faith and thus increase the amount of ransoms paid. Database with decryption keys obtained from C&C server The National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) of the police in Netherlands managed to access a command and control (C&C) serve…
