There will be many people very excited about the prospect of upgrading to Windows 10 on the 29th of July. At the same time there are other users on Windows 7 and 8.1 who do not want any part of the upgrade for a variety of reasons. Microsoft has confirmed that the new OS, currently in its final stages of development, will be made available for download/install on eligible systems on 29 July 2015. In preparation for that, back in April, Microsoft released an optional update (KB3035583) for Windows 7 and 8.1 that is called the Get Windows 10 app. It provides the prompt that started appearing on users systems (Windows 7 and 8.1) yesterday and gives you the option to…

Windows 10 is different. While Microsoft aggressively tracked down leaked builds of Windows Vista and Windows 7, the software giant has opened its doors to let anyone test Windows 10 through a process that’s not normally public. It’s a change that has allowed everyone to judge and critique Windows 10 before it’s even ready. We’ve seen the good and the bad, and now we’re about to witness the final result on July 29th. With Microsoft now committing to a Windows 10 release in less than two months, is it really ready? Windows 10 has progressed well over its relatively short development period. If you compare preview builds from two months ago to today, there are many c…

Microsoft announced today that it will be launching Windows 10 on July 29th, encouraging Windows 7 and 8.1 users to reserve their free upgrade with a notification in their task bar. However, while the company has been busy highlighting all the shiny new features in the upcoming OS, it's been a bit quieter when it comes to spelling out the limitations — including making updates automatic for Windows 10 Home users. Say goodbye to hearts and desktop gadgets Firstly there are the software losses. Most of these will only affect a small number of users, but upgrading will mean saying goodbye to Windows Media Center, the card game Hearts, and Windows 7's desktop gadgets. A…

The weekend started with a bang and the release of Windows 10 build 10130 to Insiders. Today it appears the Newegg may have just revealed the General Availability date for Windows 10 by listing a pre-order of Windows 10 Professional OEM on their website. Here is the link to the actual listing page and a cached version on Google - just in case it disappears for some reason. According to the listing Windows 10 Professional OEM will cost $149.99 and be available on 31 August 2015. There is no indication on the page if this is an upgrade version or a full install although typically a full Windows OEM install of Windows 7 also listed for $149.99. Whether t…

As you look around this new build of Windows 10 keep in mind that the changes will not be big. The Windows team is now at the point where they are cleaning up the UI and taking care of bugs. For the most part, feature wise, this is what we will be getting later this year in Windows 10. Microsoft intends for Windows 10 to be one of the most secure version of Windows ever released. Back in March of this year they announced two features for the upcoming operating system that would add physical security to your Windows 10 devices using state of the art biometrics. Windows Hello and Microsoft Passport will provide options to use facial recognition, iris scanning and fingerprints to validate your identity and subsequently grant access to the OS and your documents. Windows Hello’s facial recognition and iris scanning is still a few months away because of the hardware it will require but you can already put the fingerprint scanning to use in Windows 1…

This article, Windows 10's seven editions are excessive: See which two I'd cut, originally appeared on TechRepublic.com. Microsoft announced last week that there will be seven editions of the Windows 10 operating system (OS). When I first learned this information, I was surprised; the way Microsoft has been talking about Windows 10 being the last major upgrade -- plus, the fact that the upgrade will be free for the first year for qualifying devices, and future upgrades will be delivered in an ongoing fashion -- I assumed there would just be a consumer/business edition, a mobile edition, and an enterprise edition. In a May 13 post on the Blogging Windows site, …

Using secret questions to give people access to their passwords is a terrible idea, according to a new paper from Google. A white paper [PDF] called "Secrets, Lies, and Account Recovery: Lessons from the Use of Personal Knowledge Questions at Google" dug into the data of millions of users interactions with a range of password-recovering questions and concluded they were not only largely ineffective, but also a security risk. The idea is a fairly logical one: to let someone access their account if they have forgotten their password, give them a question that is likely to be specific to an individual and use their answer to verify who they are. The problem? We can'…

I was moving files from the main server to the backup server. Normally I have a batch script do the job at various intervals. I noticed the backups were all a week old so I went to investigate what happened. I checked event viewer for any failed tasks and everything seemed normal. I them manually fired the batch file and everything seemed to work. Switched to the backup server RDP window and no new files were there. So I decided I'd just copy them over the old fashioned way one zip at a time. I copied the first zip and when I went to paste it to the back up server the RDP connection shutdown and reconnected. I then got an unspecified error copying files.. Tried on a co…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au3ebMxPzF4 Microsoft is migrating its Outlook.com email service over to Office 365 soon, and with it will come a new interface and features. In a significant overhaul of Outlook.com, Microsoft is adding 13 new themes to its email service. While the look is familiar, it’s now more closely aligned to the look and feel of the upcoming desktop and Windows 10 versions of the Outlook app. Most of the new features are centered around improving the overall email experience. Clutter is designed to sort messages you ignore into a separate folder to keep your inbox clean. Microsoft says Clutter will automatically learn which emails to filt…

Beta testing a new operating system is full of challenges and with any new build it could easily go south for you. For myself I successfully upgraded an HP Stream 7 through three Windows 10 builds but the latest one, 10122, brought me to a screeching halt with a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error. I ultimately had to clean install build 10074 and then upgrade to 10122 to get the new build up and running. It is possible that my issue may have been related to the one being seen by other Windows Insiders on Surface Pro 3 devices since apparently the recommended fix from Gabe Aul on Twitter can address this install failure on other devices. Later on in the discussio…

Microsoft has released a new build of Windows 10, build 10122 for Windows Insiders, and as per usual they have been nice enough to write up a list of known issues with the build. If any of these issues are a show stopper for you, make sure you switch to the slow ring to avoid being updated to the build. Check out the list below. Known issues AMD GPUs and frequent crashes in Microsoft Edge -- if you’re using an AMD GPU you’re likely to run into frequent crashes in Microsoft Edge (still branded as “Project Spartan” in this build.) If you want to avoid that, simply go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced and change to the Slow ring to s…

This week, a blog post on Microsoft's Australia Partner Network offered more detailed information about the specific paths for upgrading to Windows 10. As previously mentioned, but now further spelled out, devices that take advantage of the free upgrade will receive ongoing Windows 10 updates for the life of that device and the free upgrade to Windows 10 will be delivered through Windows Update. The blog post went on to further detail the editions of Windows 10 announced last week and how they will be made available: Windows 10 Home for consumers and BYOD scenarios, available under the free upgrade Windows 10 Pro for small and lower mid-size businesses, available…

Hi, apologies for this being a bit long-winded. I was getting a regular DCOM error in the Event Viewer on my Windows 7 desktop and was advised it was caused by SuperEasy Live Defrag (which I will refer to as SELD in future). No other problems were caused but it was suggested that I use Piriform Defraggler instead. I removed SELD then installed Defraggler and the DCOM error ceased. I liked SELD as it ran in the background keeping defragmentation consistently low. Other than the Event Viewer reported DCOM error it seemed to work very efficiently without trouble. Defraggler is, I know, a very respected piece of software but I immediately began to notice unusual hap…

Microsoft is set to release Windows 10 later this year and users of current versions of the operating system will get an upgrade free of charge. That's what Microsoft said and made abundantly clear last January when it presented key consumer features of the new OS including Cortana, Project Spartan (now Microsoft Edge), DirectX 12, and Hololens, which seemingly runs some version of Windows 10. So where's the confusion? Since the announcement, there have been some mixed signals and speculation about who'll get the free upgrade and who won't. Here's a brief overview of the different upgrade paths to Windows 10... Windows 10 for pirates Users running pirated …

Ratchet, I just got the "blue-screen/dump" problem again. I restarted the computer, and WinPatrol PLUS notified me that zsystemrroot\system32\dumpprep O - k infiltrated my startup system (again!). It does not have any information about it yet. I chose not to accept it in startup. A check of WinPatrol's startup shows nothing that should not be in there. (Last time there were quite a few intrusions). As mentioned earlier, the first time this happened, a a tech "fixed" it by installing new RAM. He also did a thorough malware search which came up clean. A week later, same thing happened. I just deleted unwanted items that showed up in startup, and it…

While Microsoft has not yet revealed an exact date for the Windows 10 launch (other than summer), the software giant is revealing all the editions today that will be made available when the operating system is finalized. Windows 10 Home is what Microsoft calls the "consumer-focused desktop edition." It’s the edition that will ship on most home PCs and laptops, and it includes all of the main Windows 10 features like the new Microsoft Edge browser, Windows Hello face-recognition, and built-in universal apps. To complement the home desktop version, Microsoft also has a Windows 10 Pro edition. This will be the equivalent to Windows 8 Pro, with the ability for businesses …

In last weeks poll question we asked you to tell us if you preferred the logo from Internet Explorer or the new Microsoft Edge that was unveiled, along with Project Spartan's new name, during Build 2015 in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. Surprisingly the results were almost a 50/50 split with the Microsoft Edge logo edging out the IE logo by just one vote - 385 to 384. I am surprised because many whom I have spoken to on social media about this logo find it very jarring which, when you think about it, might be Microsoft's intent. There are certainly more edges in the new logo which I guess makes sense with a name like Microsoft Edge. We did have one comme…

Hey guys, anyone know what the law is on hardware repair warranty whether from a store or private tech? As an example, if a store/tech gives 30 days on a mobo repair and thta unit is brought back before the 30 days expires, when the owner picks it up would the owner get another 30 days from that date?
