  1. Microsoft will force Windows 10 Home users to download and install updates to its operating system without any options to turn them off. A final version of the OS, distributed to testers this week, contains a clause in the end user license agreement (EULA) that reveals Windows 10 users will receive "automatic updates without any additional notice." The changes have left some Windows users concerned. By default, Windows 10 will download, install, and reboot machines automatically when they’re not in use to install the updates. There’s only one other option: download, install, and choose when to reboot. This is a big change from Windows 8.1’s four options that in…

  2. Right now, Build 10240 of Windows 10 is rolling out to both Fast and Slow rings. Windows Insiders today are able to download and install what could end up as the RTM version of Windows 10. Microsoft isn't willing to put the RTM stamp on today's Build, but there's a couple pieces to this release that make it a good candidate. What's interesting about this Build: The Desktop watermark has been removed It is only available through official release channels (i.e., Windows Update) Mary Jo Foley says that her sources revealed that this actually *is* the RTM Build, but we'll have to wait to see to be positive. Anything and everything can change, and usually does…

  3. Microsoft has now finalized Windows 10, ready for its release later this month. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans tell The Verge that the software giant has selected build 10240 as the final release to manufacturing (RTM) copy, allowing PC makers to start loading the software onto new machines ready for release. We understand that Microsoft is signing off on the build internally today, and may announce the RTM publicly by the end of the week or choose to ignore the milestone and focus on the launch. While Microsoft is planning to launch Windows 10 on July 29th, new PCs with the software won’t be available until some weeks later. Microsoft is now pushing for exist…

  4. For those who don't know, Microsoft has been distributing a number of their Windows 10 builds via the "fbl_impressive" development branch, a branch created solely for Insiders and allows Microsoft to control what features are sent to the public for testing. There are many development branches which all focus on different things, however none of them are accessible by Windows Insiders. Microsoft announced yesterday that they were suspending Windows Update and Windows 10 Insider builds as they prepare for the Windows 10 RTM. The next build offered to Windows Insiders will be using production servers, which means the next build we receive could very well be the Windows 10…

Took this shot of the moon in the middle of the night through heavy fog with my CanoN SX50HS. Amazing the fog didn't show in the photograph. About 125 Zoom. I notice a huge crater at the bottom at about 7 O'Clock.. Must have been some huge impact. Played around with settings the previous night to see what would happen. This is the result. I quite like the Blue hue.

  7. Microsoft is around two weeks away from releasing the final version of Windows 10 to the world, and now the retail packaging for its new operating system has leaked. Originally revealed by German site WinFuture, the box art for Windows 10 is a rather simple affair. While Windows 8 displayed Microsoft’s new Windows logo prominently at the center of its packaging, the Windows 10 box art focuses on the new light-powered Windows 10 wallpaper. It’s a little less obscure than the colorful Windows 8 packaging, and it also shows potential owners exactly what Windows 10 looks like. Microsoft is also producing USB drive copies of Windows 10 this time around, and the box …

  8. The most important event in the history of the desktop will be the end-of-the-month rollout of Windows 10. It will also be one of the most confusing moments in computer history. Because Windows 10 is a free upgrade, the rollout will be a fiasco of epic proportions. The average consumer will want to upgrade to Windows 10 immediately because everyone is in a rush. Just look at the lines outside Apple Stores every time a new iPhone is released. Who really needs to buy the new iPhone the second it goes on sale? No one. These days, you can waltz into the store later that afternoon, and pick up a device with no wait whatsoever. Maybe the phenomenon is preparation for a…

  9. Microsoft is making its Wi-Fi service for Windows 10 official today. We’d heard the company was working on the service, but now Windows 10 testers will have access to try it out using the latest 10166 build. Microsoft Wi-Fi works by providing Windows 10 users the ability to purchase access to millions of Wi-Fi hotspots through the Windows Store. A "Buy Wi-Fi from Windows Store" network will appear when you’re at a hotspot that supports the feature, and you can pay through debit / credit cards, PayPal, carrier billing, and Microsoft gift cards. "Right now, we’re testing this experience out in Seattle but it’ll soon open up to the rest of the US," explains Microsoft’…

  10. Late last week, when Build 10162 of Windows 10 started rolling out, I noticed that there were several in the communities having hardware driver related issues. Some struggled often and long, while others seemed to fix problems pretty quickly by just uninstalling and reinstalling the hardware drivers associated with the specific issues. I'm glad that I caught those threads prior to installing Build 10162 myself. Here's why… Over the weekend, I took the time to install Build 10162 on my original Surface Pro. This is the device I've been using for testing as part of the Windows Insider program, delaying installing new Builds on my other range of devices – just in case.…

  11. Windows 10, though scheduled to release on July 29, is still very much a work in progress. Rumors are surfacing now that Windows 10 may hit RTM status sometime this week, but don't take that as a clue that Windows 10 is completely done and the Windows teams at Microsoft are baking celebration cakes just yet. Other than the hardware driver issues I noted earlier, there's a good number of Windows Insiders having issues with operating system activation after installing Build 10162. Specifically, when changing the product key to a new one, Windows 10 says "You need to activate Windows before you can personalize your PC," but never allows proper activation. A response on…

  12. McAfee, the security software company founded by John McAfee, has come to its final end. Bought in 2010 by Intel, which proceeded to change the name in 2014 to Intel Security, the company has now fully integrated with Intel. The reorganization included Intel president Renée James stepping down. In a statement, the company also announced the departure of corporate VPs Hermann Eul and Mike Bell, as well as the retirement of Intel Capital's president Arvind Sodhani. McAfee was founded in 1987, and proceeded to release a range of security products. Consumers will be familiar with the McAfee Antivirus and Firewall software, while IT professionals will remember some of th…

  13. After installing Windows 10, you might be one of those hopeful to see the new desktop wallpaper image Microsoft provided that was created with light, lasers, and projectors, but it's just not displaying for you. Or, maybe you want to turn off the background image altogether because it's just too distracting. The location for turning the background image on and off is located in the Ease of Access settings. To get there: Open the Notification Center in the Windows 10 System Tray and click or tap the All Settings tile. When the Settings window (formerly called the Control Panel) displays, choose Ease of Access. On the Ease of Access window, n…

  14. After all the confusion about Windows 10 upgrades over this past weekend things have been very quiet on the Ring Master front. Many times over the course of the development of Windows 10 we have attempted to infer certain outcomes/actions around build releases based on the Twitter presence and activity of Gabe Aul. He has been quiet for the last 18 hours as of this articles posting. It has also been over three weeks since Microsoft released the last build of Windows 10, 10130, to Windows Insiders. With the availability date of Windows 10 just over a month away time is getting tight to close out the development of Windows 10 so it can go RTM and be prepared for it…

  15. In Internet Explorer you can go into Internet Options and manually type in multiple Home pages to open whenever the browser opened. This feature still exists in Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 and configuring it is just a bit different. To do this: In Microsoft Edge, tap or click the ellipsis at the top right to display the dropdown menu, then navigate down to Settings. Locate the Open With area and select the option for A specific page or pages option. Tap or click the dropdown menu and choose Custom. Add websites you want to store as "home pages" in the Enter a web address box provided and then tap or click the Plus (+) sign. …

  16. Hi, I've been using Macrium Reflect for some time now on an XP desktop and more recently on a Windows 7 desktop. I like the program and it has got me out of a few scrapes over the years. Previously I have used the Linux version of the Macrium Rescue Disc to boot my system when needed but the update to version 6 (free) I got today, when I opened Reflect to do a backup, appears not to offer the option to create a Linux version rescue disc but only the Windows PE version. I am hoping that my previous Linux based rescue disc will be compatible with this latest version of Reflect because, although I believe I followed correct procedure in creating a Windows PE version …

  17. This sampling of 30 questions was taken from a study guide of 100 questions posted on the USCIS website. Applicants for citizenship must correctly respond to a handful of these questions (randomly selected) during their naturalization interview with a USCIS officer, which determines their eligibility to naturalize. The USCIS oral test does not include multiple choices. http://interactive.orlandosentinel.com/citizenship-quiz/ Unfortunately, they don't tell you how many or which you did not answer correctly so that you could look up the correct answer.

  18. Less than a week after Adobe rolled out a patch for a zero-day vulnerability in Flash Player that was exploited in the wild by a cyber-espionage group, malware researchers found it was leveraged by cybercriminals for purely financial purposes, infecting computers with CryptoWall ransomware. The latest version of Flash Player, 18.0.0.194, which is available since June 23, is the result of an emergency update that fixes a heap buffer overflow (CVE-2015-3113). Security researchers at FireEye reported the glitch to the developer and found that Chinese threat actor APT3 was already taking advantage of it to spy on organizations in multiple sectors: aerospace and defense,…

  19. Hi, After issues with the latest version of Macrium Reflect and moving back to the previous version, I thought I would create a new partition for my personal files. I would then need only create new backup images of the the C: partition only occasionally such as after installing new programs etc. The new data partition could be backed up more frequently as data changes on a day to day basis. The partitioning process appeared to work smoothly and I quickly redirected my personal folders into the new P: partition. There was a bit of tidying up to do with some of the shortcuts but no problems. However I thought I would disable and then enable System Restore when al…

  20. Dell Inspiron E1505. The guy is having some trouble with the onboard KB so he attached an external but sometimes some keys on the internal are working without him pressing them so he's looking for a way to disable it without having to open the laptop. I tried having him disable the PS2 KB in the device manager but when he restarted it the kb self installed again, any idea please since I can't find anything on the net?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEV on this your special day. Have a good one, mate.

  22. Wow – what a crazy weekend. Did you see that three putt finish to the U.S. Open? Oh, we’re not talking about that weekend craziness? Although many of you who visit the SuperSite might also watch golf the vast majority of you are likely looking for clarity this morning after a crazy weekend of Windows 10 related news. Specifically, whether or not Windows Insiders can upgrade to the final version of Windows 10 from the Windows Insider preview builds and get a free copy of Windows 10? The short answer is - yes. Last Friday Microsoft’s Gabe Aul took to the Blogging Windows site and posted an update about the Insider program. In response to that I wrote up…

  24. I haven't used the new Spartan browser that much while running Windows 10 on my laptop. Last night I did the upgrade to my main box which ran Windows 8.1. I opened up Spartan and started to browse to a few sites. I then wanted to go the my home page. I looked everywhere and didn't see a home button and no setting to switch it on. How can Microsoft forget to add a basic feature of any browser? Is this another one of those stupid Microsoft feelings on features that they think users don't want or need so they remove them? Sort of like what they did when they removed the start menu. While I like Spartan I will not use it without the home button. I use the home butto…

  25. While there was some confusion over Microsoft giving away Windows 10 to pirates, the software giant is now being clear about its free upgrade plans for Windows 10. We already know that Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will get Windows 10 as a free upgrade (providing you install within a year of July 29th), but Microsoft is introducing a new way for anyone to get Windows 10 free of charge. If you install the latest Windows 10 preview (build 10130) on a machine and use a Microsoft Account that's registered for the Windows Insider program then you'll get the final version of Windows 10 free. Windows 10 will stay genuine, so you can clean install the preview right now and …
