Adversaries are always trying to take advantage of current events to lure users into executing their malicious payload. These campaigns are usually focussed around social events and are seen on a constant basis. Today, Talos discovered a spam campaign that was taking advantage of a different type of current event. Microsoft released Windows 10 earlier this week (July 29) and it will be available as a free upgrade to users who are currently using Windows 7 or Windows 8. This threat actor is impersonating Microsoft in an attempt to exploit their user base for monetary gain. The fact that users have to virtually wait in line to receive this update, makes them even more li…

One of the more praised features people like about Windows 10 is the return of the Start Menu. Although many people love the Windows 8-style tiles on the Start Menu, there are also many people who prefer a classic Windows 7 style Start Menu. Luckily for those people, there is a solution. Stardock has retooled its application Start Menu app for Windows 10. Similar to its Windows 8 origins, the Stardock app replaces the tile-filled Start Menu into a Windows 7 classic menu. Called Start10, this application lets users can get their familiar menu back and still enjoy the new features and security of Windows 10. It’s only $5, so you don’t have spend an arm and leg getting yo…

Windows 10 resolves a lot of the annoyances left over from Windows 8, but it also comes with a few of its own—little as most of them may be. Here’s how to tweak a few of the OS’s new features and fix its little quirks. Personally, I’m really enjoying Windows 10. I upgraded my desktop from Windows 8.1 and my laptop from Windows 7 and both went off without a hitch. Most of the lingering little problems I lived with in Windows 8 have been resolved. Of course, like with any OS, there are just a few things that could use fixing. Fix Up Your New Start Menu The Start menu became one of the more divisive issues for Windows 8, which removed it entirely i…

Yesterday I shared with you my recommendations for the first five things you should update and customize after installing your upgrade to Windows 10 after tomorrow’s general release. Once you have settled into your new Windows 10 installation and are satisfied with how everything works, you can do a simple maintenance task that will save you a significant amount of space on your device. This is not so much of an issue if you are on a desktop or laptop with a large hard drive however, on systems with small storage devices it can recover a few gigabytes of space which can be helpful. When your Windows 7 or 8.1 machine is upgraded to Windows 10 your Windows folder f…

In less than 24 hours, Microsoft will start upgrading Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines to Windows 10. The software giant is preparing for this big release, at 12AM ET on July 29th (9PM PST on July 28th), by pre-loading the final version of Windows 10 on PCs eligible for the upgrade. A number of Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who have registered for the upgrade have started noticing that the full installer files for Windows 10 have been downloaded to C:\$windows.~BT as Microsoft gets ready for release. Microsoft will unlock and activate the Windows 10 install at midnight tonight, allowing some Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade. Not everyone will get access …

You may be interested to try this variation of a popular word game. The object is to take two words so that the end of the first is the beginning of the second as follows: antique and question share 'que'; now to add a bit extra, when the two words are overlapped, a continuous sequence of letters that starts in the first word and finishes in the second, should create a third word as follows: antiquestion - antiquestion which in this example is quest. The first word here began with 'a' so if we continue in alphabetical order, the next player should choose a first word beginning with 'b' and a second word starting with the ending of that word etc. such as the followin…

After I returned the menu bar to Firefox and posted in my previous thread, this happened: - OE mail alert sounded, OE icon appeared in System Tray. - But no new message in Outlook Express! - Tools < Send & Receive All produced alert with black bar running across it and indicated no new messages. - Verizon Email Box showed new message. - Opened new message in Verizon Email Box. - OE icon did not, will not leave System Tray. - Sent another test message via OE; same scenario listed above. Any suggestions? I'm so used to OE, I would dread having to abandon it and use Verizon Mail Box, but at least I'd still get the OE new-message sound alert. …

If you are running Windows 10 build 10240, you are probably wondering why your PC either rebooted to install an update or took longer than expected to boot due to the installation of an update. That's because Microsoft rolled out another security update today (yes, on a Saturday). No specific details were given about the update aside from the typical "a security issue has been identified" description. "A security issue has been identified in a Microsoft software product that could affect your system. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Micros…

If you’ve purchased a ferocious Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, there’s a good chance you enjoy living on the bleeding edge of technology. That’s why an issue that’s preventing GTX 980 Ti owners from reserving a copy of Windows 10 hurts so deeply. This morning, I tried reserving a copy of Windows 10 on a system that packs a GTX 980 Ti and, to my surprise, found that it wouldn’t show the usual “Reserve your upgrade” or “How this free upgrade works” options. Digging into the “Check your PC” portion of the app revealed why: Windows 10's upgrade app apparently doesn’t recognize the graphics card—even though the 980 Ti is one of the first GPUs to support DirectX …

Here's a good tip and an interesting personal story. The home button in the web browser is pretty important to me. It's just something I've become accustomed to using and I know many of you do, too. I was contacted recently to join in the July 29th Windows 10 release celebration at an undisclosed location (I can share more later) to meet up with the engineer that took my Windows Insider feedback and included it as a feature in Microsoft Edge. My feature request? A Home button for Microsoft's new Edge web browser. So, yeah. That was me. It seems Microsoft is taking the Windows Insider feedback to the extra level, and I'll have more to share about that lat…

In just over a week we will arrive at both the end and beginning of the journey to Windows 10. With Windows 10 Microsoft has been more open and released builds to testers earlier than ever before for a Windows operating system beta. They have also established channels of communications for public and community feedback to augment the telemetry they gather as we use Windows 10. The very public pre-release Windows Insider Program, which has tested Windows 10 since last year, will close its doors while a new post-release version of that same Windows Insider program will kick off after 29 July 2015. Microsoft’s approach to Windows 10 is forcing us to change our minds…

On July 15th, Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 build 10240 to participants of the Windows Insider program. For those who don't know, build 10240 has been widely reported as the Windows 10 RTM. But as our very own Zac Bowden states, build 10240 is RTM, just not in the traditional sense. You can read more about that Here Release notes for build 10240 have leaked onto the internet courtesy of Wzor. In the release notes, we can see numerous bugs have been fixes, as well as several known issues still pending to be resolved. You can check out the change log Here. Windows 10 is set to be released on July 29th, and thanks to the "Windows as a Service" model, we can expect fix…

Remnants of the Windows 8.1 Start Screen are still present in Windows 10, but provided in a much friendlier, more customizable, and familiar way. Essentially, Microsoft took the best of Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1, and melded it with the familiar streamlined operations of Windows 7. The new Start Screen hangs directly off the revamped Start button and is completely customizable. You can add new tiles, change how the tiles operate, and even resize them. Microsoft Edge, of course, is Microsoft's new web browser – the eventual replacement for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is still there, but buried deep so that Edge gets the biggest focus. Edge is a fantastic…

It's been a bad week for conspiracy theorists. As the Windows 10 launch nears, Microsoft is clearing up loose ends. Today's announcement of a 10-year support commitment for Windows 10 should remove one persistent bit of FUD from the discussion. Today's announcement clears up the "supported lifetime of the device" controversy. Here's the full text of the footnote: Microsoft commits to 10-year support lifecycle for Windows 10

XP Pro, Firefox Browser. :help: The Firefox toolbar which I use to check if I have the latest FF edition, access bookmarks and Tools has disappeared. I need Tools so I can download a WinPatrol PLUS new version. How do I get back the Firefox toolbar? Recently, I deleted all History and other things to block free access to the G-mail account of one of my sons . He used my computer while visiting and forgot to log out. Hi, I'm not sure if this should have been posted in a different forum but my issue relates to a difference in advice from Windows Update and Belarc Adviser which I find confusing. The system is Windows 7 SP1 32 bit. I ran Belarc Adviser mainly to get a readout of my system's component details. As well as giving me the information I wanted, the program stated the system was missing three important updates. Two of these were identical for Adobe Shockwave Flash (i.e. it was listed twice) and the remaining one was Windows Update KB3067505. I updated Shockwave Flash manually from the Adobe Download Center (the version I got was a slightly later version than that Be…

Microsoft has deactivate all of the pre-release keys given to Insiders for the Windows 10 Insider program. Basically, this means If someone doesn't have the Insider Preview currently installed on their PC, they will not be able to do a fresh install of Windows 10 Insider Preview and activate it with a pre-release key, even if it's build 10240. Thankfully, if you are still currently running the Insider Preview, your key will remain activated for the time being. However, if you need to reinstall the Windows Insider Preview, it's probably best to wait until RTM. Here's what a Microsoft spokesperson had to say: Source: http://www.winbeta.org/news/all-pre-release…

Sorry, conspiracy theorists: The new documents are simple and straightforward, with absolutely no gotchas. Here's what's new: Activation and licensing status when upgrading from a non-genuine copy of Windows. As usual, the license agreement allows the right to install and run Windows on a single licensed device. It also requires activation, a process that is automatic on most devices from large OEMs. The new agreement adds this clause: "Updating or upgrading from non-genuine software with software from Microsoft or authorized sources does not make your original version or the updated/upgraded version genuine, and in that situation, you do not have a license to us…

Just last week, we submitted what was the potential for the official retail packaging for Windows 10 based on leaked images. And, while it appears that the Windows 10 background didn't make the final cut, Amazon has at least confirmed in product listings that the color scheme was right: Blue for Home and Purple for Pro. Available for pre-order now, Windows 10 Home and Pro editions are available from Amazon, but won't start shipping until August 30, 2015. Here's the listings: Microsoft Windows 10 Home ($119.99) Microsoft Windows 10 Pro ($199.99) What's more interesting about these listings, though, is another confirmation that Microsoft is seeki…

Those of you who know of June Byrnes from previous forums will welcome this good news. June underwent successful throat surgery on 3/23, came home Thursday, is doing as well as can be expected at this point, is grateful no chemo or radiation needed. When she's ready, the next step will be pulmonary rehab. She's upbeat, and I'm sure would welcome your prayers and/or positive thoughts for a speedy recovery. Thanks!

Adobe's Flash software is now blocked by default on all versions of the Firefox web browser. Mozilla, which develops Firefox, imposed the block because recently unearthed bugs in Flash were being actively used by cyber-thieves. The bugs were detailed in a cache of documents stolen from security firm Hacking Team that was hit by attackers last week. Adobe said it took Flash's security "seriously" and was planning bug fixes. Flash is widely used on many websites for both multimedia and interactive elements. Common code On its support pages, Mozilla said the block would remain until "Adobe releases an updated version to address known critical security issu…
