One of the Windows 10 related complaints I hear regularly on SuperSite for Windows and through social media is the mandatory delivery of universal drivers through Windows Update. We already know that OS updates are obligatory for all Windows Home users and can be deferred for different periods of time for those on Windows 10 Professional & Enterprise. Part of those supposed mandatory downloads and installs have been driver updates for the third party hardware on computer systems. While it is great that OEMs and third party hardware manufacturers are providing more of their drivers through Windows Update in Windows 10, there are many times these drivers may n…

For some users of Windows 10, screen flickers and explorer.exe crashes are making the new OS unusable. Microsoft is blaming incompatible 3rd party applications. Three apps have been officially tagged as culprits: Norton Antivirus, iCloud, and IDT Audio. Microsoft's offered solution is to boot Windows 10 into Safe Mode and simply remove these apps if you have them installed. However, Symantec would like that you not remove its Norton Antivirus product completely for obvious reasons, so the company has provided detailed steps on how to accomplish the Safe Mode boot, apply a special Screen_Fix.exe tool, and then reinstall Norton Antivirus. 24 August 1995: Do you remember where you were when Windows 95 was released into retail channels for General Availability? I was stationed overseas in Italy with the U. S. Navy in 1995 but I just happened to be back in the states for a two-week training class. In the early evening of 23 August I found myself lined up outside of a local electronics retailer waiting for midnight on the 24th to arrive. My goal was to get my own copy of Windows 95 in retail packaging to take back home to Italy where I had a beige box IBM compatible machine waiting for the upgrade. I remember being very concerned about whether or not the retailer would have enough copies of Windows 95 be…

The misunderstanding around Microsoft's Services Agreement is starting to trickle into the ordinary life of regular Internet users, with scared torrent tracker admins banning or thinking of banning Windows 10 users from their sites. We aren't talking about The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents, RARBG, or ExtraTorrent here, but the small scene trackers which are so private that it takes 30 minutes of googling just to find what the site acronym stands for, what their URL is, and what the correct sign-up procedure is. These trackers, along with the release scene, are where most pirated materials first get posted and spread online, and where privacy, security, and anonymity …

I've been digging into the shell commands available in Windows 10 for the last few weeks. Using Shell commands you can create shortcuts to everyday tasks. Or, for those that manage multiple computers in companies, you can use the Shell commands to automate tasks through scripts. In this tip, I'll cover a couple Shell commands related to Microsoft Edge, the Windows 10 primary web browser. There's two Shell commands associate with Microsoft Edge. They are: Microsoft-edge: Read: The get a look at all the App-related Shell commands, see: How To: Open Windows 10 Apps Using Shell Commands Microsoft-edge: The Microsoft-edge: shell command can be used to ope…

While Windows 10 has had a smooth release there have been mounting concerns over new data gathering policies. One such concern comes from Windows users who may not be completely square with the law when it comes to their software licenses. It would seem Microsoft has left the situation intentionally vague to give themselves plenty of room to do what they want. One such concern is that Microsoft will use their new data collection policies to crack down on software pirates. Explicitly within the Microsoft Services Agreement Microsoft will check your system for “playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices”. While it seems odd to narrow the…

My FIOS battery died. May it rest in peace. :kinky: Before you read about my trials and tribulations with Verizon service (or lack thereof), here's the silver lining: A new (the latest) FIOS battery system was installed. I'm renaming my previously sluggish XP computer Speedy Gonzalez ! :groovy::groovy: My rant: I suffered 3 days without land-phone, TV, and internet connection. My medical alert depends on a working land-phone; I don't dare get in the shower without first testing it and hanging it close by. Thank God for my cell phone (which I rarely use except to take with me in case of an emergency when away from home). I used it for 3 days trying to…

Hi, Today I found 5 new Windows updates. One, KB3087985, was described as important and was a security update for Windows Explorer. I have installed it with no problems. For the time being at least, I have hidden the other 4 optional updates which are KB30752949, KB3077715, KB3078667 and KB3080149. I don't understand Microsoft's gobbledygook in their explanations of the purpose of these updates but I gather the last, KB3080149, relates to time zones in some way. As they are described as optional, it seems they aren't crucial so I have hidden them to avoid being nagged while I try to discover if they would be beneficial for my Windows 7 SP1 system or not. Any co…

In the three weeks since the new OS's debut, Windows 8.1 users have been the most willing to migrate. Windows 8.1 users have been half again as likely to upgrade to Windows 10 as their compatriots running Windows 7, data from a Web metrics vendor showed today, confirming expectations about who would upgrade first to Microsoft’s new operating system. The ascension of Windows 10’s usage share has largely come at the expense of Windows 8.1, according to measurements by Irish analytics company StatCounter. Of the combined usage share losses posted by Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 since the last full week before Windows 10’s July 29 launch, 57% has been attrib…

It has been a little bit less than three weeks since Microsoft released Windows 10 for consumers around the world. The OS, which is receiving positive reviews from across the web, is being adopted quickly despite there being a few teething issues upfront. According to our sources, Windows 10 has surpassed 53 million installs, which StatCounter says now accounts for 4.95% of the market as of last week. At it's peak, Windows 10 was being installed on about 1500 machines per second. According to NetMarketshare, Windows 8.1 had 13.09% of the market at the end of July, and OS X 10.10 had 4.74%, which means Windows 10 has likely surpassed the install base of Apple's most …

Microsoft is rolling out to Windows 10 users its second cumulative rollup of fixes on this month's Patch Tuesday. A week after delivering its first cumulative update for Windows 10, Microsoft is out with another. This week, it's KB3081436. Last week, it was KB3081424. Last week's Windows 10 cumulative update was focused on performance and functionality, not security. For this week's rollup, the KB page is here. In addition to a security update for the new Edge browser in Windows 10, here's what else is included in the fixes in today's update: Vulnerabilities in the .NET Framework could allow elevation of privilege Unsafe command-line parameter passing co…

At the Black Hat USA 2015 conference in Las Vegas, a team of security experts led by Jonathan Brossard have presented a vulnerability in the Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) protocol used for sharing files in local networks. The vulnerability affects all version of Windows, including the newer Windows 10, and can be exploited via the Internet, something researchers thought as impossible. SMB is a 21-years-old protocol created by IBM, which allows for sharing files and printers inside a network. Since its creation, it has evolved and reached version 3.0, which now ships with most Windows OS instances. The protocol is used most of the times in enterprise networ…

Windows 10’s Start menu is a melding of two worlds: With it, Microsoft is attempting to bring the best of the classic Start menu together with the best of the Windows 8 Start screen. Whether Microsoft pulled it off is a topic for debate, but you do have some control of what appears in the new Start menu. Add, rearrange, and resize live tiles Windows 10 comes with a default set of live tiles in the Start menu—those large icons that populate the right-hand side of the Start menu—such as the Weather, Calendar, Mail, and Photos apps, as well as the Edge browser. But you can add just about any app to the live tiles pane. Pop open the Start menu, then click All apps.…

If you've performed the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 (not reported for Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 upgrades), you may be experiencing an issue where Office 2013 documents will error when you try to open them. Apparently, this problem has been reported enough that Microsoft is investigating a proper fix. A new KB article (KB3086786) has been created to acknowledge the problem and provide a couple workarounds. One workaround involves correct permission on folders, the other is to run an online repair of Office 2103. The repair is probably the easiest to do for most. Another workaround has been reported where the problem can also be fixed by disabling or bypassin…

Windows 10 is now available as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. While millions are performing the upgrade this week, Microsoft is working hard on updates and fixes behind the scenes. Some of those patches have already started rolling out, but there are more to come. The first bigger collection of fixes will come with what Microsoft calls Service Release 1 (SR1). Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans tell The Verge that SR1 is due to be released in early August, possibly as early as next week. While SR1 won't include new features, it will fix some of the issues people have been experiencing with Windows 10. After the initial patches and updates, …

When our own Rod Trent returned from attending the Windows Insider and Windows 10 launch events in New York City last week he shared some insight he gained during the various conversations he participated in. One of the big pieces of info was the reminder that Windows 10, the release everyone is receiving after 29/7, is the beginnings of this new OS. Windows as a Service (WaaS) is a term that has been used to describe this process of keeping the OS up to date and continually improving it. It was also reiterated that Windows Insiders are a big element of this WaaS process and will be testing updates before they head out to the general population. Just yesterday the a…

Hi Pete, someone was downloading a microsoft app when the laptop started doing some strange stuff so now she can't log to windows as the system is not accepting her password and since she has a lot of softwares on the machine she doesn't want to reload the OS. I am guessing this is a virus situation but before I should have her bring her machine here, I would like to know what course of action I can take here. My first guess was to try a password crack software but if it's virus activity I am not sure it would work, any ideas please?

The number one complaint people have about Windows 10 is that it forces patches down their throat. Good! There are too many security dolts using Windows who are making the net unsafe for all of us. The Internet needs a warning sign that reads, "You must be at least this smart to use the net." Well, we'll never get that, but Microsoft has made one good step in that direction. With Windows 10 Home Microsoft is implementing automatic patching. Automatic Windows 10 patching is a good idea. That's great news, but many users hate Microsoft for this Big Brother approach. Anyone who's read most of my work, knows I've disliked many of Microsoft's moves, but this o…

Home users can't refuse updates, so it pays to make sure System Restore is active in case disaster strikes. We’ve already talked a few times about Microsoft’s new approach to delivering updates for home users in Windows 10. Unlike previous versions of the OS, Home users won’t be able to prevent updates from being installed on their PC. While this is probably advantageous for most people it does bring up two major objections: fears about a bad update screwing up your PC, and downloading updates at times that aren’t desirable, such as when you’re on a metered connection. The second objection can be taken care of if you set your Wi-Fi connection as metered—Windows…
