http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070913/#story1 By Scott Dunn Microsoft has begun patching files on Windows XP and Vista without users' knowledge, even when the users have turned off auto-updates. Many companies require testing of patches before they are widely installed, and businesses in this situation are objecting to the stealth patching. Files changed with no notice to users In recent days, Windows Update (WU) started altering files on users' systems without displaying any dialog box to request permission. The only files that have been reportedly altered to date are nine small executables on XP and nine on Vista that are used by WU itself. Mi…

Hi, I have NIS 2010, Win XP. To scan 320,500 files (full system scan), It took 3 hours about a month ago. but now for the less amount of files (282,402 files), it took 6 hours to scan today. I'm not sure what is going on. I'm not familier with files in general, but I did delete a lot of music, videos, pictures and some of my "favorites" from my pc since last month to reduce the files, but noe it's double the time. this is strange. I've never done anything to my files since I'm not familier with them. Could someone tell me a tip to reduce scan time? Thank you. Meg

Hello, I recently removed McAfee form my laptop with Vista Home Premium OP. I installed the free version of AVG Antivirus for virus protection in McAfee's place. I was going to look for a firewall program too, but saw that the Vista built in Windows Firewall took over that job. My question is do these 2 programs give me enough protection for my laptop? Can I trust these 2 programs to protect my desktop computer? My desktop is hard wired to my router and I have Verizon Fios cable for my internet provider. My desktop is always on and always connected to the internet. I want to make sure I will have enough protection before I make any changes to my deskto…

Because it is badly flawed and prone to give bogus information, that's why! Take the following example. I move small batches of video files constantly. Sometimes between various internal drives, other times to external drives. I installed the so-called KB "patches" that is suppose to address slow file transfers. The bottom line, sometimes Vista is reasonably fast with them, other times it is inexcusably slow and so damn stupid in what it reports that it is laughable. Like just now. I tried to move six lousy files, totaling just under 3.5 GB. Normally at most this should take about a minute and a half to maybe in extreme cases two minutes to move to a USB 2.0 e…

Ok complain about me all you like (although you are totally incorrect)... but you ALSO must complain about : VistaBoy extraordinaire>> FRANK See what crap he is posting... really read his posts... Vista is a disaster. We all know it. I am upset and I want my money back or I want a permanent fix. You do not have to be a geek to figure this game out. How long do you think it should take reading all the tips and quips to get all this vista crp to work smoothly. This is an outright rip off. Anybody interested, I may need alittle input on writing this petetion.

I'm at the end of my rope with Vista Business... Almost everything takes 10 times longer to install and configure, it won't even consistently synch with my Tilt w/ WM6. I'm on the verge of converting my license to XP Pro and I'm wondering if SP1 will provide the fixes to this and a myriad of other hassles that have made the "upgrade" to Vista extremely painful. I'm tire of my printer drivers having to be reinstalled every time I turn the printer on because Vista forgot I had that printer. The only feature that I might miss is the window preview when you hover over an app on the start bar and that's not nearly enough to continue. My small group of frie…

Why is it apparently necessary for certain MVPs to reply to the known trolls in this newsgroup? I can understand some others but MVPs should know better, shouldn't they? -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html

"Somewhere in California - At 8:30 PDT with the release of Snoopy Linux 2.1 and Goober Linux 1.0, the number of Linux distributions finally surpassed the number of actual Linux users." "We've been expecting it for some time," Merrill Lynch technology analyst Tom Shayes said, "but this is a little sooner than most expected. We've seen explosive growth in the number of Linux distributions, in fact my nephew just put out LittleLinux Chart Tommy Linux 1.1 last week." http://www.bbspot.com/News/2000/4/linux_distros.html -- Moshe Goldfarb Collector of soaps from around the globe. Note that in this post, I accused Frank of *nothing*. He has since blown it out of proportion in a lame attempt to discredit me. Here's the original post: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general/msg/3e3c373f45c111ca?dmode=source I asked the famous question about his daughter to illustrate to Frank, the doofus, why no win answer questions are lame. Instead of understanding it, Frank went astral and took it personally, almost as though he was trying to cover up something. Alias

Aero Glass vs. Compiz Compiz beats out Aero hands down due Compiz being much more configurable. Work Stations Ubuntu beats out Windows 7 because it has more than one work station or desktop. To get more than one with Windows 7, one has to spend money on a third part program. File search Windows 7's file search is far superior to the one that comes with XP but is slow compared to Ubuntu. File transfer Windows is still slower than Linux. Internet speeds Windows is still slower than Linux. Boot up time. Windows is still slower than Linux. Safe surfing Windows is still more vul…
