Officials at a US university were left red-faced after their decision to rename a law school after late Supreme Court judge Antonin Scalia prompted hilarity over its unfortunate acronym. George Mason University in Virginia said its law school would be called the Antonin Scalia School of Law. The eagle-eyed immediately took to Twitter to point out that the acronym would be ASSoL. The university has since renamed it as the Antonin Scalia Law School.

I'm having a problem with a Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit machine. The customer complains that the computer hangs. The Event View shows no crashes since 2014. Everything is working fine except I can make the machine hang for about a minute. Here's how: Boot the machine and let all the startup items settle out. Start Internet Explorer 11. It goes to Google.com - no problem there. Go to www.lenovo.com. The machine will hang for about a minute. During that time, the little circle in the IE tab just stops moving. This tells me the site is not loading. I'm monitoring Task Manager and it stops updating during this time. Then after about a minute, the Lenovo site l…

Just days after an airplane’s emergency slide came hurtling to the ground, landing in an Arizona yard, the emergency device is once again the center of an unusual story: a United Airlines’ flight attendant allegedly deployed a slide, rode it down, and walked away from her job after her plane landed in Houston on Monday. ABC13 News reports that the ordeal began around noon when United flight 1246 arrived at Bush International Airport in Houston from Sacramento. According to video footage of the incident, posted by Click2 Houston, the plane comes to a full stop once it reaches the gate. At that point, you can see the slide deploy, a woman throws her bag to the ground,…

Anyone heard of Soluto? Found it on a W8.1 machine I'm working on. This is a new one on me. Looks like another free app that optimizes your start up. The reading I've done says it's a PUP. Don't know how malicious it is.

If an individual has the following incorporated in their computer are windows security updates necessary? 1. Appropriate antivirus, antispyware, antimalware & anti-ransomware programs. 2. Various adblock programs such as "WOT", etc. 3. Vigilant scrutiny of software downloads & intelligent/common sense web searching. Concerning the above, I'm interested in the results, be it positive or negative from users with actual experience as opposed to general opinions.

Just about any pay-TV or Internet service provider (often one in the same) lets new customers sign up online. You can do the whole process — check your address for availability (even if the company’s database is dreadfully wrong), pick a service tier, schedule an installation appointment, and even have your credit history checked — all without talking to a single human being. But if you need to cancel that same service, you likely have to spend quite a long time talking to someone on the phone, explaining that you simply don’t want to give their company any more money. A recently introduced piece of legislation in California, AB 2867, is hoping to compel cable companie…

Windows 7 and 8 users know all about Windows 10. They’ve probably seen an icon advertising the new operating system in their system tray for more than half a year, and put up with more than a few pop-up ads asking them to install the free upgrade. If you have Windows Update enabled, the install files are likely already on your computer, and there have even been reports of Windows 10 installing without any authorization from users whatsoever. Isn’t there some way to outright stop Windows 10 from installing on your machine? And moreover, to make that icon and the pop-ups, just disappear? As it turns out, there is. Windows 10 is a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, 8, a…

Imagine it: a Microsoft-built phone running on Google’s Android operating system. Go ahead, it’s easy if you try. What do you see? I see Panos Panay getting us pumped for hardware as delicious as the oft-imitated Surface Pro 4 and new Surface Book. I see Android tweaked to feature Microsoft software and services like Outlook and the rest of Office for Android, OneNote, OneDrive, Skype, Cortana, and yes, Bing. The same search engine trusted by Apple’s Siri. It’s not as crazy as you might think since all of the above are already available from Microsoft in the Google Play store. Hell, Microsoft even makes a keyboard for Android as well as an app launcher. And let's…

Working on a W7 Home Premium, 64-bit. It had McAfee Security Center from AOL. The McAfee firewall wasn't on. I couldn't turn it on. I couldn't turn Windows firewall on. Uninstalled McAfee Security Center. Still couldn't turn the Windows firewall on. Ran the McAfee removal tool (MCPR). Still couldn't turn the Windows firewall on. Ran the MS Fix it tool. That says a group policy or McAfee is preventing the Windows firewall from turning on. See attached file.

You read that right: The popular Bash shell command is coming to Windows 10, with Ubuntu's help. Microsoft’s Linux love affair continued at the company’s annual Build keynote on Monday, with the revelation that popular Linux command-line tool Bash is coming to Windows 10. Whoa. And no, it’s not running in a virtual machine, Cygwin, or a emulator. Microsoft partnered with Canonical, the company behind the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, to build native Ubuntu binaries directly into Windows 10 that allow Bash to run. And Microsoft’s already brought SQL Server and Visual Studio to Linux, and embraced Red Hat for Azure services—this commitment to open-source is …

During its keynote address at the Build 2016 conference today, Microsoft announced that there are now 270 million computers running Windows 10. The latest version of Windows was released publicly last summer, after a prolonged public test period. Since launch, Microsoft has regularly issued updates to the operating system, giving the impression that Windows 10 is still very much a work in progress. There are, of course, many millions more PCs out there without Windows 10, so Microsoft still has work cut out for it. But given the relatively short time since the new platform's release, this pace of adoption is pretty good and better than it was for Windows 8. In fact, Mi…

If you’ve been around this industry for as long as I have, you’ll remember Steve Gibson clearly – maybe not fondly, but definitely clearly. Steve created a popular application called Spinrite around the time Seagate MFM hard drives were the only type of hard drive available. Spinrite was used to perform diagnostics on those old hard drives, but in my experience destroyed more drives than it saved. As a PC technician from that era, I remember allowing Spinrite to run for hours upon hours and the heat emanating from the hard drive could warm a small village. Still the application has its place in history. If you’re one of those Windows or Windows 8.1 users who have compl…

Hey Pete or anyone else. Something strange is going on with my work pc again, this time whenever I run any of the normal scans, they turn up empty except for SAS. When I run first SAS scan it finds a ton of adware tracking cookies, when I run it a 2nd time, no results and it had been going like this for the past week. In this forum I did not see a sticky requesting logs of MBAM e.t.c which is why I am posting only the latest SAS results below, help please? On February 14, 2014, the Hennessey Venom GT set a new world speed record for 2-seat sports cars by reaching a top speed of 270.49 mph (435.31 km/h). The test was performed at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on the 3.2-mile Space Shuttle landing runway. Now that's scary!

Typically, when a user becomes infected by a crypto-ransomware, the infection targets and encrypts the files on the victim's hard drives. This leaves the operating system working properly, but with the user unable to open the encrypted documents. The Petya Ransomware takes it to the next level by encrypting portions of the hard drive itself that make it so you are unable to access anything on the drive, including Windows. At the time of this writing, the ransom payments are at ~.9 bitcoins and there is no way to decrypt your drive for free. This ransomware is currently being distributed via emails that are targeting the human resources departments of German comp…

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 update KB3140741 to provide stability improvements for the servicing stack on computers running version 1511, but it appears that a number of PCs are actually experiencing some issues after installing the patch. The company hasn’t publicly acknowledged the experienced problems, but we’ve seen isolated reports of issues that appeared after this latest update was installed. Our reader Jean Ward told us on Twitter that, after installing update KB3140741, the Start menu stopped working completely, with the only workaround said to be the complete removing (and eventually the hiding) of the update to avoid being offered once again. There…

In the past we’ve reported on Target’s fuzzy math, retailers failing to understand what “clearance” means, and department stores being sued for allegedly inflating the original price of items in order make discounts look more attractive. These issues appear to have combined at Walmart, where one shopper says the company is running a “clearance conspiracy”: slapping clearance tags with much higher prices on formerly less expensive items. A Reddit user posted several photos he claims shows the nation’s largest retailer is running a ploy in which customers pay more for items on clearance than they would when the product was full-price, The Huffington Post reports. The…
