  1. Microsoft is edging closer to its one billion goal. After less than a year of upgrades, 300 million machines are now running Windows 10. That's a 30 million improvement on the 270 million figure Microsoft provided at Build in late March, and a sign that people are continuing to upgrade at a steady rate. Microsoft has a big goal of reaching one billion devices running Windows 10 within the next two years, and it's nearly a third of the way there. Microsoft's 300 million figure includes Windows 10 PCs, tablets, phones, and the company's Xbox One console. Consumers have adopted Windows 10 quicker than Windows 7 or Windows 8, but free upgrades have clearly helped. Microsof…

  2. A critical medical equipment crashed during a heart procedure due to a timely scan triggered by the antivirus software installed on the PC to which the said device was sending data for logging and monitoring. The device in question is Merge Hemo, a complex medical equipment used to supervise heart catheterization procedures, during which doctors insert a catheter inside veins and arteries in order to diagnose various types of heart diseases. The incident happened in February 2016 Merge Hemo consists of two main modules. The main component is the actual medical device, connected to the catheters, through which data acquisition takes place. This component is connecte…

  3. Spoofing phone numbers — the practice of making it appear to the caller ID system that you’re calling from a different number — is not illegal, so long as the spoofing is not done to commit fraud or otherwise perpetrate a crime. But even when the intent of the spoofing crosses the legal line, does the company providing the spoofing service bear any culpability? That’s the question underlying a lawsuit originally filed in 2013 against TelTech, the makers of SpoofCard, a service that lets users pay to disguise their phone number and even modify their voice to “protect yourself or pull a prank.” In the original complaint [PDF] filed in a U.S. District Court in Massachu…

  4. If you’re arrested or a suspect in a crime, the police can’t force you to remember the combination to your safe, or the passcode for your iPhone. But what if that phone can be unlocked with biometric data like a fingerprint? Does the ready access to this information give law enforcement an easy way to open secure devices, or would that be a violation of your constitutional rights? The U.S. Supreme Court made it clear in 2014 that police must have a warrant to search the contents of a mobile device, but does that warrant give them the authority to compel you to use your thumb to actually unlock the device? The answer to that will ultimately hinge on how courts view f…

  6. A security flaw in software that's preinstalled on millions of Lenovo devices lets malware run at the system-level. A serious security vulnerability has been discovered in software that's installed on almost every Lenovo notebook, tablet, and PC -- potentially affecting millions of users. The affected Lenovo Security Center software allows users to see the overall health of their device, from hardware and software status, network connections, and installed security features. But security researchers have found a way to raise the privileges of the software, which could let an attacker gain access to the whole system, according to a soon-to-be-released blog post by…

  7. Microsoft is reminding everyone today that the free promotion for Windows 10 upgrades is finishing soon. The software maker first released Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines on July 29th last year, giving everyone a year to upgrade at no cost. Many had assumed Microsoft would keep the free upgrade rolling past the year cut off, but it appears the company is sticking to its original promise. "Time is running out." In an announcement of 300 million Windows 10 users, Microsoft has started driving awareness of the July 29th date. "Time is running out," says Yusuf Mehdi, who heads up Microsoft's Windows and devices marketing efforts. "T…

Hey Pete, how's it going? Just would like to inquire about something for any possible future purposes. If a tablet starts locking up due to malware infection and you can't run an online scan and since it doesn't have a USB port, how would you be able to clean the infection please?

  9. In New York City, construction companies can get temporary “No Parking” orders to make it easier to move their equipment and materials in and around a job site. And while drivers who ignore these signs can have their vehicles ticketed and towed, the construction workers do not have the authority to relocate those cars with a forklift. CBS New York has reported on multiple stories of people in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg section having their cars illegally moved onto sidewalks with the aid of a forklift. First came the family who managed to get video evidence of their SUV being moved by construction workers. At first, the family wondered how their new Infiniti SUV had…

  11. Hey guys, I was watching a court case where the judge said a tech is only responsible to hold a customer's machine for 30 days but is this from the date of drop off or from the date when the customer was notified that the unit was ready?

Many of the images you'll see here are Photoshop edits that I have carried out over the years. I still have a passion for photo editing now. When editing our photo's, we are only limited by our own imaginations. Although I used to own one of these a few years back, the bike below is not mine. As you can see I've put my company name onto the bike, and removed it from it's original background.

  15. Anti-ad blocker sites put reader security at risk, and fall foul of privacy laws. Ad-blockers are controversial, but are just as much a fact of life as ads are. But now some sites are preventing users with active ad-blockers from accessing their content -- a controversial practice not least because of the security implications, but also as it falls foul of privacy laws for an entire continent. Elephant in the room: ads keep websites free for everyone to access, but they also keep writers and content creators in business because ads are the driving force behind our wages. (Sites like ZDNet and sister-site CNET are both ad-driven communities, for example.) But t…

  17. If you're willing to wait an hour for it to boot up, you can enjoy the ludicrous pleasures of running Windows 95 on an Apple Watch. Developer Nick Lee this evening showing what it looks like once the operating system is up and running. It's slow, to say the least. But it definitely appears to be more functional than you'd expect. As Lee points out in a blog post, the Apple Watch's specs are well above those of a typical Windows 95 computer, so it makes sense that it should be capable of running the Microsoft's old OS. Of course, there are quite a few hurdles to get past first, including the fact that Apple doesn't exactly provide a way to install new operating system…

  18. Microsoft is closing off one of the easiest ways to Google search in Windows 10. The company has announced in a blog post that starting today, it will block the ability to perform third-party searches through the Cortana digital assistant, as part of an effort to maintain an "integrated search experience." The move comes in response to a number of recent workarounds, which used browser extensions or even registry edits to establish Google as the default engine for Cortana searches instead of Bing. The company is particularly concerned about logging search results across different parts of Windows, as certain Cortana queries can now trigger corresponding features in Edg…

I had a nice surprise this morning. I had a chat with one of the Exts members on skype. The gentleman in question was calling from America. We had a three way conversation with our very own Dougie. Although computers were mentioned, we talked about other things as well. It was refreshing to talk about things in general. I would encourage all the members to try and get to know each other... and hey, you don't have to just talk about your computers. As much as I like the staff here at Exts, it's nice to chat to someone who's first priority isn't the in's and out's of the latest operating system, etc, etc. Having said all that, I want all you folk who have a real life…

  20. In the past year, exploit kit makers have switched from targeting Java security flaws to exclusively exploiting weaknesses in the Adobe Flash Player, a recent report from the NTT group shows. The security firm claims that all of the top 10 vulnerabilities targeted by exploit kits during 2015 were Flash flaws. According to historical records kept by the NTT Group, 2015 was the first year when exploit kits used more Flash flaws compared to Java, which almost disappeared from exploit kits altogether. This change in trends comes after Java was 2012, 2013, and 2014's most targeted technology via exploit kit vulnerabilities. Besides Flash, in 2015, the second and third mo…

  21. Microsoft Windows 10 Update Interrupts Weather News Blooper Upgrade to Windows 10. You will upgrade to Windows 10. Upgrade to Windows 10 now. Upgrade to Windows 10 during a live TV broadcast. Upgrade to Windows 10. Just upgrade. Now. Microsoft's aggressively nagging Windows 10 upgrade prompts claimed another victim on Wednesday morning. KCCI 8 News Meteorologist Metinka Slater was just trying to tell us the weather in southwest Iowa, but Windows 10 had other ideas. A giant Windows 10 upgrade prompt appeared, heading east towards Omaha and Red Oak and looking like the worst snow storm on record. Slater was quick to switch feeds and rid Iowa of the Windows 1…

  23. When was the last time you used a pay phone? Given that just about every American old enough to say “hello” now has a cellphone, you’d be forgiven for thinking these once-vital telecom totems had gone the way of the telegraph. But there are still hundreds of thousands of pay phones out there, waiting to be used by people without any other options available. That’s not to say pay phones are easy to find — they no longer cover the walls at train stations, airports, and bus terminals, and they aren’t generally found in booths at hotels or restaurants — but don’t be mistaken, they are still connecting people. In fact, the Los Angeles Times reports that while those relic…
