Just thought I would post some findings I have had with DDR4. So far it seems the manufacturers are stating very conservative timings. I have checked this with many others and many other forums also. My Corsair kit XMP settings are 16-18-18-36. However I was able to get stable results with 13-14-14-36 with 1.35 volts. Using the stock voltage of 1.2, I was able to achieve 15-15-15-36. These timings are at 2666mhz. The kit is actually rated for 2800mhz but I found that speed to cause some wonky issues with board stability due to the memory divider being used. This may change with bios updates. So just food for thought if you are in the market for DDR4.

I'm always amazed by Boston Dynamics. One anecdote I like to share about the company is how the next generation Atlas has 3D printed limbs, with embedded "veins" in the structure to route its hydraulics, which keeps the robot strong while making it vastly lighter and in some sense simpler than the original Atlas. That's just some impressive engineering work on all levels. Of course, while Boston Dynamics is pretty much at the state of the art when it comes to humanoids, it's probably best known for its terrifying line of dog-inspired, gas-powered robots like BigDog and AlphaDog. It's also famous for kicking those robotic animals, in an amazing technical display of real…

LinkedIn is obviously a very handy tool when it comes to the world of work, but far too many users of the social network are happy to connect with strangers, who could be malicious parties looking to cherry-pick precious data. That's the headline from a new survey of 2,000 people in the UK, carried out by Intel Security, which found almost a quarter of respondents (24%) had connected with someone they didn't know on LinkedIn. There's a chance that said unknown person could be a criminal type who simply wants to rifle through their potential victim's profile, in order to find personal details which could make a crafted spear phishing attack look far more realistic (a…

Today Microsoft released Windows 10 Build 14371 to Insiders on the the Fast Ring and, while it had a long list of fixes included, it only had one new feature added however, this feature promises to help users minimize activation issues which can be a source of frustration. We are at the point in the development of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, just five weeks from the expected release date on 29 July 2016, that in the past there has been a slowing down of builds and new features to the operating system update. Apparently the new Microsoft is changing even more than it has because we have had a total of nine new builds released to testers in June alone. There ha…

A new variant of the Apocalypse Ransomware was released that utilizes the VMProtect software protection product. Using VMProtect, the ransomware developers hoped to make it more difficult for security researchers to reverse engineer their ransomware. Over the weekend, Fabian Wosar, of Emsisoft, was able to get past the VMProtect protection and create a decryptor for the latest variant of the Apocalypse Ransomware's encrypted files. This new variant uses the .encrypted and .locked extensions and will create a ransom note called [filename].How_To_Get_Back.txt for each file that is encrypted. For example, the ransom note for the test.jpg file will be called test.j…

Imagine you’re sitting in your living room, watching some home-shopping show on QVC. The host is showing off some of the features on a laptop computer and — wait, did that just say “N****r”?? A Consumerist reader — we’ll call her Jane — says her sister spotted this, and other not-family-friendly language while watching a recent laptop demo on QVC. “They were selling a cheap laptop, which I thought she wanted me to see,” Jane said. “I just said ‘no’ to her, I wouldn’t get it, then she said look at the text on the screen. So I did.” And she wasn’t pleased. The screen of the laptop, which was being sold for $289, appears to showcase a social media site of some …

Hi, Trust in Microsoft, certainly on my part, has diminished severely over the last year in relation to its incessant pushing of Windows 10. I am suspicious of any non-essential updates and the latest offer, which I received today is KB3161608 and is supposed to address possible issues with the updater service, does not diminish my suspicions. As ever, the description of the update from Microsoft is unclear and a little ambiguous for me as a layman. Given Microsoft's record of trying to sneak in updates relating to their push for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 (whether their systems will cope and whether the user wishes to upgrade or not), I …

My sister Mary brought her HP desktop to me because it was shutting down. She suspected it was heat-related. I confirmed her suspicions. About 10 minutes after booting, the CPU fan would spin faster. I installed SpeedFan which said the GPU was running at 98C. Opened the case and found the CPU heat sink was clogged. Cleaned it out. SpeedFan now said that GPU was running at 72C which I thought was high. I then installed Speccy and its temp readout is different. See below. These temps look good to me. Why the conflict between Speccy and SpeedFan? Maybe SpeedFan hasn't kept up with new hardware. Summary Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-b…

Users of popular online forums are being advised to change their passwords following the leak of some 45 million credentials. As LeakedSource reports, millions of user credentials from over 1,100 websites and communities – including techsupportforum.com, autoguide.com, petsguide.com and motorcycle.com – have been exposed after parent company VerticalScope suffered a previously undisclosed hack in February. VerticalScope confirmed the breach obliquely in a security advisory posted on its website, where it described how it was rolling out stricter password rules: “…we recently became aware of potential risks to community accounts (username, userid, encrypted passwo…

I was preparing to take some screenshots for tutorials today and I noticed this weird covering on some of my picture folders. It was not like this yesterday when I checked it. It doesn't seem to be affecting my photos but it looks very strange to me. Has anyone else ever run into this before? It's annoying to me and I'd like to get rid of it. I should add, I use Windows Photo Viewer for my pictures. I don't have any photo software programs and I use either SnagIt or the snipping tool to take screenshots.

A piece of Android-based mobile ransomware has made the jump and is now capable of infecting and locking smart TVs running on the Android OS, security researchers are reporting. Called FLocker (Frantic Locker), this ransomware appeared in May 2015, and Trend Micro says it detected over 7,000 different versions as its code kept evolving. Only in April 2016, Trend Micro says it identified over 1,200 FLocker variants, as there was a visible development push behind this threat. Trend Micro has not confirmed this, but the ransom screen seems to be identical to the ones used by the Cyber.Police (Dogspectus) ransomware. Back in April, around the same time of the spike…

Microsoft just surprised the world with its LinkedIn acquisition. Valued at $26.2 billion, it's a huge price to pay for a social network, and it tops the charts as Microsoft's biggest-ever acquisition. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's first major acquisition, the success or failure of LinkedIn will define him as the leader of Microsoft's increasingly service-driven future. While many are surprised at the cash figure, the question on everyone's lips is, why does Microsoft want LinkedIn? Nadella's internal memo does a good job of providing a basic outline to partially answer that question, and more. Nadella points out that LinkedIn is "how people find jobs, build skills,…

US-CERT warns about a rise in macro malware Following numerous reports from various security firms about a large number of malware that uses macro scripts in Office documents to spread, the US-CERT team has issued an official alert to all organizations about this resurging threat. Macros are not malicious by nature, being added to automate various operations in the Office suite. Macro malware, as this threat is sometimes called, relies on small scripts attached to Office files that execute when the document is opened, if there's no security restriction. Macro malware was very popular 20 years ago Macro malware was extremely popular in the 90s, when it h…

It's not the most thrilling heist in the world, but it's definitely effective. Last week, police in New York reported that a pair of thieves managed to steal 19 iPhones from an Apple Store simply by dressing like employees. According to DNAinfo, a thief "dressed similarly" to Apple's own workers walked into the electronics repair room of a SoHo store on June 1st. He grabbed the iPhones — worth $16,130 — and handed them over to an accomplice who hid them under his shirt. The pair then walked out the store. The thieves presumably had more on their side than just the correct clothing (you'd need to know the layout of a store to confidently walk over to the spare iPhones),…

Most of us provide IT support to our family members at some level and if that is the case you know that one relative that keeps clicking on things they should not be clicking on. Whether it is installing a browser toolbar, another web browser or malware, it all wreaks havoc on their computer system and eventually results in a phone call asking for help because their system is running slow, etc. Although it is not always the case, many times these are older relatives who might not have the same level of computer skills as some one younger. There are companies out there who understand this dilemma and they cater to it by selling computers that have an entire interface…

Hey guys, I had to replace a dead HDD on this machine. When I power on it, after the logo it goes to this screen http://imgur.com/EQpVwno and it stays that way so I restart and enter the bios, http://imgur.com/VUgrGZV If I choose the first option under UEFI which is IPV4 and hit ENTER it restarts and goes back to that same screen. If I select "Legacy Boot Sources", it does the same thing. What I am not understanding is why when I move the arrow to the Legacy boot sources option and hit ENTER, it doesn't show any boot options, help please?

Any software — even a premier operating system — that gets onto computers through stealth means has crossed over to the dark side. Several weeks ago my wife came fuming into my office. “Windows 10 just hijacked my computer,” she complained. “Without asking, Microsoft upgraded me from Windows 7, even though I didn’t want Windows 10, and I had to wait for the installation to finish before I could get any work done.” I asked her whether she had accidentally clicked “OK” on any upgrade notifications, ignored any warnings that she had received or gotten any other notices about the upgrade. No on all counts, she answered before leaving to wrestle with her new oper…

Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera... these are just some of the web browsers available to today's internet users. While each browser might differ somewhat from their competitors, the major players in the web browsing game all come pre-equipped with a certain set of features. Today I'm going to talk about one such property known as "incognito mode" (also sometimes known as "private browsing"). First of all, what is Incognito mode? Incognito mode is a particular method of surfing the web via a web browser. It allows a user to hide their web activities from other users on a single, shared personal computer by automatically erasing their browsing/sear…

Nearly every online retailer has some kind of user review system that allows people to offer public feedback on what they bought, whether it was as advertised, and whether it was worth it. This deters sellers from scamming innocent customers. But what about fake reviews? They certainly exist and they can be hard to spot, especially on Amazon where fake reviews are rampant. No matter how observant and smart you think you are, you’ve probably fallen for a few before. And no, just because a reviewer has “Verified Purchase” next to their name doesn’t mean that their review is genuine! Sellers now hire people to buy items and post fake reviews, which in turn dec…
