A few passionate people here seem to have a mission, rather like the white shirt and backpack lads who occasionally knock at my front door. Neither get paid for their effort, but those very pleasant kids sell their version of Heaven for ten percent of my income. The online missionaries "sell" Ubuntu and get nothing for it. I see the Linux advocates as a cross between cult members and those who bought Korean cars in the 80s and said "I saved $1,000 - these are great cars!" Eventually, relentless pressure works - that's the result of "relentless". PLEASE DON'T SQUEEZE THE... was an uberannoying ad campaign for buttwipe named "Charmin" by some imagin…

I would like a date that MS is going to have the +4 gigs of RAM issue fixed on Vista Ultimate 64. Anyone have any info, as MS doesnt say a word? I have a sweet machine that works beautifully......................If you discount the 8g RAM bug. I have all Vista 64 Certified components, and untill I ran into this problem, there was no for-warning from MS. Its like if they ignore the problem it will just go away. IM NOT GOING AWAY BILL GATES!! FIX YOUR S@#T!!!!!

A few months ago, I was building a PC, I asked the question abut Vista vs. XP, and I ended up using XP. I would like to ask the same question now. Is Vista the way to go with a new PC? I will be using this for a business computer, with many types of applications. It will be a performance PC, with 4GB of memory and a 3 GHz processor. Thanks.

Repost from archives: Vista - XP cpu usage comparison A survey in December by US IT services company Softchoice claimed that Vista will be the most power-hungry Windows desktop so far. The report claimed that at Windows XP's launch, for example, the minimum CPU requirements were 75 percent greater than those for the operating system it replaced, Windows 2000. Vista's minimum CPU requirements are 243 percent larger than that of XP. http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Microsoft_goes_on_green_Vista_offensive/0,130061733,339274460,00.htm

My hard drive went south so I had to reinstall Ubuntu. I timed it and it took exactly one hour to install Ubuntu, download and install 124 updates, all the programs I use and tweaking Compiz Fusion to my liking. Windows XP, OTOH, on the same drive, took DAYS to finish. Alias

From now on, no more from me about Linux in this news group. This doesn't mean I will no longer use Linux, although I plan to change from Ubuntu to Mint -) I'm doing it because a lot of people really like Windows 7 and, unlike Vista, I tend to agree. Microsoft has finally produced a decent OS and I will try to help here as much as I can. -- Alias

While I would like the USB and other upgraded support options of SE, I have been putting off upgrading to SE on an older laptop, because, 1.) the FE config is running great & 2.) if anything goes wrong with the upgrade, I don't look forward to reinstalling FE with all the fixes. I don't have an external HDD or a CD burner on the system, so I came up with this plan to clone the C: drive: Remove the HDD from the laptop and install it in a USB external enclosure. Connect the enclosure to my XP system. Run Ghost to clone the C: drive to an external HDD attached to the XP system. Reinstall HDD in laptop. Clean install of SE. I would appreciate kn…

My Zone Alarm Pro firewall subscription expires in a few days and I recently bought a Norton Internet Security 2008 package that contains a firewall. I currently have the Norton firewall turned off and just use the Zone Alarm Pro firewall. I don't use the Win XP firewall because I heard that it's not a good idea to have several firewall on at the same time. We get internet through a Belkin pre-N wireless router that is supposed to have some sort of firewall built in and that one is turned on. My computer connects to the router with an ethernet cable and my son's computer uses a Belkin N usb wireless adapter. They both have the same current setup I describe regar…

"At the end of the decade, when Microsoft's executives look back at the debacle that was Windows Vista, they'll see that simply slapping a fresh coat of paint on an otherwise aging Windows architecture wasn't enough to fool anybody. Let's hope they also realize that, as with any major update, they needed to make their case to IT. Focusing on consumers while ignoring their enterprise customers, and assuming IT shops would simply fall in line, was no way to execute a platform migration." http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id1155325152pp1fp2fpid2 ________________________________________________________________________ This is an interesting article th…

I have been getting these emails with "PCSecurityShield" in the from list. No, I have not opened any of them. I just wanted to know what it is. I would like to know also the website from which it is coming. If it is bad stuff, I can put it in restricted zone. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Angel

http://www.shelleytherepublican.com/2008/04/23/the-definitive-review-of-ubuntu-804-hardy-herron.aspx I'm sure the Vista fanboys will be laughing with the blogger, instead of laughing at the blogger, but I thought, "Hey, let's all get a laugh for a change." -- Peace! I would like to produce a (text) file that shows when (date & time) bootup is completed and when shutdown is initiated. The file needs to append itself everytime bootup and shutdown occurs, i.e the file grows bigger with time. For example, over a year period the file will probably have many hundreds of entries in it. The program must NOT delete previous entries. Any suggestions?

Unable to find any specific category for a registry question so am posting the question here. The registry on the computer needs to be cleaned. Most of the errors I am getting are related to registry problems. I am not computer knowledgeable to clean the registry manually. I wonder if someone could suggest a good, reliable and trustworthy registry cleaner software and that would not be too expensive. Thanks! -- Barbara

Here is the online version of the September Dell Catalog that was mailed out last week. http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/catalog?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs Not a single mention of Linux ANYWHERE in the catalog. Maybe the online version of the catalog is different but a quick look shows it looks the same. All kinds of back to school, business, college, student stuff and Dell Reccomends MICOROSFT VISTA logos EVERYWHERE. So where is this great push of Linux Dell is supposedly doing? Where the hell are they hiding it? And why? Maybe Dell knows full well that Linux as a desktop system is about as in demand as Bubonic Plague. Ex…
