I wouldn't even say that if they paid people to install it! Its funny that back when xp was the main MS OS, windows users used to make fun of linux since was incompatible with hardware and software. Now with vista windows is incompatible with hardware and software too! What do they have to say now? And another thing top stupid excuse I have heard about vista "When xp was first released it had bugs too, therefore it is ok that vista is crap" FALSE: XP never had so many problems..it worked fantastic right out of the box. I can still install XP with no service packs on a computer and it will run great. The service packs were more of security patches for…

Hello! I just ran into my third new client with "Antivirus 2008" or "Antivirus 2009" rogue malware infection on an XP computer. The first to get hit had Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.x on it, the second had McAfee that came with the computer, the third has Dell's Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2008. All three had the latest antivirus definitions. I can see the SAVCE system and McAfee getting hit, as neither blocks malware/spyware, but Trend PC-Cillin Internet Security 2008 is supposed to block it. What is its attack vector? Does anyone know of consumer AV software that actually prevents this thing from installing? Thank you! Gregg Hill

Microsoft this week pushed down the KB980846 Win7 update that provides Vista context for legacy programs. I assume this means that we can now run most programs written for Vista. This is supposed to work in all Win7 versions. I just wonder why don't they do the same for XP programs, instead of forcing us to upgrade to at least Win7 Pro? Is this just so they can get more money out of us?

Upon upgrading to Windows 7 from XP, I note that right-clicking a file to rename selects ONLY the title of the file and excludes the extension. For me, this is a timesaver because only rarely do I change the extension when renaming a file.

Here we are in 2008 and I can't quite believe the misery I'm still having with the latest operating system from Microsoft. I went for Vista, not that I really had much choice, because some low lifes came into our house and robbed us of our lap tops, mobile phones and my car - which they used to try to smash into a cinema's cash point machine. When I bought my new Dell they did allow me to go for XP but only just and only on a machine a didn't fancy. So, it was into the brave new world of Vista for me. Feels like I've been robbed all over again. Here's just some of my grumbles after three months of frustration. 1) Stupid backup. How thoughtful of Micro…

My comment: Lets cut the crap, its vista's fault the whole windows platform is losing popularity, windows cannot be trusted anymore. After vista, the worst operating system ever made, the future is bleak for microsoft, and people sense that. Macs are 100 more stable and faster, and linux is getting easier more user friendly and of course its free. I told everyone that Vista would be the start of the end of microsoft.... Windows sales will decline even further..... Companies are totally ignoring Vista SP1 which did very little to correct the badly designed OS. Sure it might have removed some bugs, but vista is stupid by design.. a service pack would have t…

My 120 days of eval are nearly up. I have found the XP 64 bit version of windows the most stable and reliable version of Windows I've ever used and have had only one BSOD when I was overclocking my graphics card, so not really a microsoft o/s issue. I mainly use the computer for office applications, photoshop, video editing and playing FSX. Given that I can get an OEM copy of Vista 64 bit for less than the OEM 64bit XP pro, I am likely to run with Vista. I'd like to hear from people who have used both in anger and see if any valid arguements exist for sticking with XP, say it's considerably more stable etc, given that long term the future is with v…

Is anyone as tired as I am of staring at the Vista Spinning Circle of Microsoft Incompetence? From boot-up to shut-down and everything in between I am utterly tired of staring at this spinning circle. Vista, SP1, SP2: nothing changes. The best anyone can say about Vista is that at least it works, sort of. The computer I write this on boots to XP, Vista and Win 7: only the middle OS spins and spins and spins waiting to do anything while the hard drive thrashes like a an out of balance clothes dryer. Vista apologists need not respond. If you only run Vista on a machine you cannot see how utterly lousy it really is and what you are missing in performance from…

I posted the below in XP's help_and_support forum but I don't think that forum is watched as much as this vista one is. The core question can be answered as if I were doing this with a vista product. --------original post------------------- I want to purchase XP Pro w/ SP2 from someone on eBay. They claim it is "Brand New! Genuine from Microsoft! w/ TECH Support" The only thing is it is an OEM version. I've never bought an operating system by it's self without being preinstalled before. Will this OEM version work for me? What are the limitations on OEM versions? I am replacing my current XP Pro operating system with a new one because I locked the sy…

To all you Vista whiners and haters. I have used Microsoft Operating Systems since Dos 3.0. Other than Windows ME, Microsoft keeps improving each operating system and keeps adding new functionality to it version after version. I have Vista running on two machines and XP running on one machine on my desk and I prefer using the Vista machines. I have found yes there are some issues that I have with Vista but not enough to stop me from using it. I have had minor problems so I also have had problems with XP and NT and 95 and 98 and dos etc. There is no perfect OS. I have worked with Linux and Unix but unfortunately I am a consultant in the real busine…

Can somebody please explain how to turn off all the stupid "you don't have permission to do this" warnings in Vista? I am the only person who uses my computer, I installed all the software on it, and I don't need persmission from anybody thank you. I just tried to run Microsfot Word "detect and repair" feature, and after starting to run, it told me that I don't have permission to access some folder in system32. So I manuallyfixed the permissions on that, nad then there wasn another, then another etc.

Boy, does this group need a "Self-Anointed Moderator," or what?! -) Back in the good ole days of xp.gen, the pro v. anti-microsoft forces used to fight over things that were at least tangentially on-topic, you know about the OS, and the company that made the OS. Sure, the fighting got dirty, nasty, and personal, but it was never as totally off-topic as this group is. This group is more like the collection of trolls over at alt.os.windows- xp, more about trolling than the topic at hand. People of good conscience need to take a stand against these trolls that have hijacked this group. Sitting back quietly has only condoned the actions of these chil…

BSOD i've had my dell inspiron 1420 for about six weeks now. i've had occasional program failures since i got this laptop, but it's been picking up the past week or so. i am running vista home premium. last night, i upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. i replaced both sticks of RAM. since then, i seem to have even more problems, but i'm not sure if it's the RAM, vista, or something else. i've had numerous program failures, some error about superfetch, an error message about host process for windows services stopped working, and now, two BSODs. in the past week i have also installed adobe creative suite 3. i have also upgraded a progr…

Repost from archives: Vista - XP cpu usage comparison A survey in December by US IT services company Softchoice claimed that Vista will be the most power-hungry Windows desktop so far. The report claimed that at Windows XP's launch, for example, the minimum CPU requirements were 75 percent greater than those for the operating system it replaced, Windows 2000. Vista's minimum CPU requirements are 243 percent larger than that of XP. http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Microsoft_goes_on_green_Vista_offensive/0,130061733,339274460,00.htm

I'm going to help a friend setup his new DELL with Win7 Pro & Office 2007 this weekend 4/6. I have used the [Files and Settings Transfer Wizard] between WinXP SP3 systems many times at work. But I've always transferred the user's folder that had the Outlook PST files to ensure the mailboxes were transferred, but that was with *Office 2000 or 2003* installed in source and Office 2003 in destination. How well will the *Win7* [Files and Settings Transfer Wizard] work from a WinXP with Outlook 2000 to Win7 with Outlook 2007? In Win7 with Office 2007, where exactly (path) are a user's Outlook PST files kept? As you can gues…

Rival Apple's market value has surged from $15.6 billion to $221 billion over the same period." I guess Gates should fire the little shit and take over again. -- Alias
