If you're a Yahoo user, you already know that 500 million Yahoo accounts were compromised by malicious hackers, and that you should reset your Yahoo password. What Yahoo didn't tell you was that you may also need to unlink, and then relink, all the mobile devices that access your Yahoo account. That's because if you check your Yahoo email or Yahoo calendar on a tablet or smartphone, that mobile device is permanently logged into your Yahoo account with a unique password that's different from your regular password. As Dustin Childs and Simon Zuckerbraun of Trend Micro pointed out in a recent blog post, even if you've reset your regular password, malicious hackers ma…

As if auto-dialed, pre-recorded robocalls weren't bad enough, scammers are now blasting out robocalls that use poorly synthesized text-to-talk programs in an effort to try to frighten people into thinking they are being sued. The following recording is just one of many robot-voiced robocalls we've received in recent weeks from scammers. They all claim that we are facing legal action. This one mentions a criminal lawsuit and provides some bogus docket number, but no reference to any actual crime; others have claimed to be from the FBI, IRS, or other agencies: What's interesting about the calls is that the call-back number provided in the recorded message matches the …

For the third computer in a row, the ESET on-line scanner screen changes color and you can't read the statistics after about 45 minutes into the scan. Pete mentioned that others are observing the same. Has anyone here been able to successfully ran an ESET on-line scan lately?

Amid recent reports of Verizon Wireless customers getting dinged on their bills for going over their monthly data allotments, some of these subscribers say they are going over their data limits because Verizon stopped sending them overage alerts. As was rumored this morning, so it has come to pass. Yahoo has confirmed a massive data breach — and it’s far, far bigger than anyone guessed at first. The breach affects “at least 500 million” users, Yahoo confirmed today. Yes, that’s more than half a billion, with a B, people. The data, Yahoo writes, was stolen in late 2014. The company suspects a “state-sponsored” actor did it — meaning some government paid someone to get this data, and it wasn’t just the act of rogue, bored hackers. Compromised information may include: Names E-mail addresses Telephone numbers Dates of birth Hashed passwords Encrypted and unencrypted security questions and answers Ya…

A piece of software masquerading as a security product from Malwarebytes is making its rounds on the web and distributing ransomware to unsuspecting users. This technique isn't new. Malicious software has been disguising itself as anti-virus solutions since the 1990s. What's significant about this particular attack campaign is the crypto-malware behind the mask: DetoxCrypto. The ransomware has been making quite a stir since researchers first detected it back in August. Already it has two variants to its name: a "Calipso" iteration that takes a screenshot of the victim's computer, and a Pokémon GO-themed encrypter. (To be fair, the latter isn't the only one of …

The Florida woman who was shocked to receive a $9,100 bill from Verizon Wireless for data she says she couldn’t possibly have used is off the hook, as the company has decided not to make her pay up. To recap: A Tampa woman who never goes over her monthly 4 GB data allotment was suddenly hit with a bill for $8,535 because Verizon said she used 569 GB. Tack on the $600 fee she’d have to pay to leave the company for T-Mobile, and her total bill was $9,135. She told The Plain Dealer that a company representative called her late on Wednesday afternoon, the same day the Cleveland newspaper and The Tampa Bay Times published stories about her situation. She says the repr…

Director of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) James Comey puts tape over his webcam and he wants you to do it too. Speaking at the recent Center for Strategic and International Studies conference on Wednesday, Comey likened covering your cam to locking your car and the door to your home. Comey has spent 2016 generating headlines. In February and March he squared up to Apple who, spying a very slippery slope, declined to help the FBI crack an iPhone used by one of the perpetrators of a mass shooting in San Bernadino, California. In June he called time on the FBI’s investigation into Hilary Clinton’s personal email server with an incendiary press release…

I set up a Windows 7 machine to receive faxes using Windows Fax and Scan. Incoming faxes didn't show up in the Windows Fax and Scan software "Inbox". However, there were in C:\Program Data\Micrsoft\Windows NT\MSFax as expected. Don't know why they didn't show up in the MS Fax and Scan application. Any idea why faxes don't show up in the MS Fax and Scan application?

In the past month or so, I've run into two cases where the wireless radio on wireless printers failed. Both printers indicate the wireless radio is on, but neither see the access point. In both cases nothing had changed in the computer room setup. No new hardware. The printers just stopped working. I know the wireless network in both cases was working because other wireless devices were able to access the Internet when I was there. One printer was an HP; the other was a Canon. Anyone else seeing this phenomenon?

On Tuesday, adblocking company Adblock Plus launched a new platform… to sell ads. The company announced the controversial move on its blog, saying that it was: … launching the beta version of a fully functional ad-tech platform that will make whitelisting faster and easier. So, what exactly does that mean? The Acceptable Ads platform As part of the company’s Acceptable Ads initiative, advertisers and publishers who have agreed to make ads that abide by a number of specific criteria can be ‘whitelisted’. The criteria demands that ads don’t disrupt a user’s natural reading flow, are easily identified as ads and conform to specific maximum sizes. By default, u…

We learned today that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which was released more than six weeks ago, may not finish its full upgrade roll out until early November. Although many enthusiasts used the Windows 10 Update Assistant and the Media Creation tool from Microsoft to get the upgrade immediately there are likely many everyday users who are probably waiting on their system to automatically upgrade through Windows Update. We want to find out how many of you opted to force the update or are you being patient and waiting for it to arrive on its own schedule? Thanks for participating in our poll and letting us know! A Florida woman who says she barely ever uses her monthly allotment of data recently received a bill from Verizon Wireless for $9,153, claiming she had used 569 GB of data in the span of about 10 days. Every month since February, when she started using Verizon Wireless, the Tampa-area woman says she’s paid $118 for a package that includes 4 GB of data, The Plain Dealer reports. She says she’s never gone over her data allotment, which she uses to listen to Pandora and for work-related activities that don’t use more than 0.5 GB. Everything changed in July when she went out of town for a wedding. She had plenty of unused data, so even if there was on WiFi while she was…

Device sold online by Hong Kong company for around $50 A Hong Kong company is selling a USB thumb drive called USB Kill 2.0 that can fry any computer it's plugged into by introducing a power surge via the USB port. Last year, a device called USB Killer developed by a Russian hacker named Dark Purple made waves online because of its ability to destroy any computer the hacker wanted. Now, a Hong Kong company that uses the same name, USB Killer, has launched a similar product called USB Kill 2.0, which is selling online for $49.95. The company claims it developed the product for the sole purpose of allowing companies to test if their devices are vulnerable to…

I’m a Linux guy, but I kind of like Windows 10. However, its luster has been wearing thin. First, there was Cortana’s eavesdropping. Then there was the insanely buggy Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Adding insult to injury, Microsoft now force-feeds us updates and gives us only 10 days to roll them back. But, thought I, I could still run Windows 7, my favorite Microsoft operating system, when I needed to run Windows. Wrong! I should have seen the handwriting on the wall. Back in January 2016, Microsoft announced that it would support new Intel Skylake-powered PC with Windows 7 and 8.1 only until July 2017. Just 18 months of support for a PC that’s likely to …

Windows 7 IE 11 After opening IE, get message the IE has stopped working. Looking for a solution. This repeats a few times and then the home page loads. Tried blank home page. Same results. Once things settle down and I have a page loaded, any other page that I open yields the same errors. Same results if I run IE without Add-Ons. I've reset IE. Ran sfc /scannow Uninstalled Verizon Internet Security. Clues: IE works fine if opened using "Run as Administrator". It also runs fine if I uncheck "Enable Protection mode". Chrome works fine. Been working on this for a few hours. Any suggestions? Thanks
