My laptop will not accept my password of three years to start up Windows 7 Starter. I have not got capitals lock or numbers lock turned on. I was unable to implement the advice given by J W Stuart on July 14 2010 to an earlier user about pressing F8 when booting up. This made no difference, I still got the screen asking for password and not accepting the password. And in another posting J W Stuart offered other advice which involved getting as far as the screen with the start button, but I cannot get beyond the request for the password. Any help will be gratefully appreciated! Continue reading...

All of my drivers are up to date (I had checked from HP's website), and the bios are even up to date to the latest version. Windows is also updated to the latest version. I have tried my best at fixing the problem myself, but little progress I made. So, I figured that creating an account and asking the community would be a good idea. To describe the problem, as the title suggests, the blue screens seem to happen at random, but through a blue screen checker software, I learned that there are certain files mentioned continuously; these file names, are as follows: 1. athrx.sys 2. ntoskrnl.exe 3. dxgmms1.sys 4, ndis.sys 5. NETIO.SYS Because I do not want…

This post refers to info on MSE's History tab. When the Quarantined items radio button is selected, it shows no detected items. When the All detected items radio button is selected, it shows 1 detected item. For this detected item, in the Action Taken column, the item displays 'Quarantined'. If the item is quarantined, why isn't it listed when the Quarantined items radio button is selected? Also, for the 1 item detected, in the detail box, MSE displays the following: The following error occurred: Error code 0x80508023. The program could not find the malware and other potentially unwanted software on this computer. Category: Trojan Descrip…

Recently I received several (60+) bounced emails containing apparently malicious links which I did not send, however they have my address as the originating address. These emails went out to my AOL address book. My outbox on my computer does not show these, but they do appear in my online "sent mail" folder. I was online to AOL for the brief period (3 mins) when this happened (that was on a backup computer). I am running MSE and Windows Firewall (both active and on) under Win7 on my Dell Notebook. I have a full scan going now. Questions: 1, Will MSE scan find the program which sent the emails? 2, How can I set windows firewal…

I am writing a client-host type of application, where the host is a plugin loader, and the client is a plugin. The host and client would communicate through UNIX File Socket. My main concern is, there is a chance the plugin is malicious, and I obviously don't want to have it **** up the system. I would like to container the plugins, so they cannot create files, make sockets, change host name etc. I've heard about the unshare call, which seems to create new namespaces for the process calling it. This'd mean however that I'd have to count on the plugin to call it, which wouldn't work. How would I create a container like that? It needs to be as lightweight as po…

This is a question from a sample exam in Michael Jang's study guide for RHCSA/RHCE; "Set up a vsFTP server with access to the server1.example.com and the physical host system" The first two parts of the question are simple. The third part "...and the physical host system" is...odd? Let's say the physical host machine is on 192.168.1.100/24. The VMs are on a Virtual Network on the physical host machine of 192.168.122.0/24. Server1 is 192.168.122.50. If the physical host (192.168.1.100) pings 192.168.122.50 (server1) then server1 is going to see the IP as it's default gateway (192.168.122.1) not 192.168.1.100. So how can I restrict access to 192.168.1.100 …

Hello! This is my first post to these forums, so please correct me if Ive posted in the wrong section. Ive been running two monitors on my Debian (testing) computer with its integrated (intel) graphics for some times. I recently got it into my head to add a third monitor. I bought a graphics card (nvidia geforce) and another monitor. Ive been really struggling with setup though. After a bit of initial frustration I had a breakthrough when I read that xrandr doesnt support multiple graphics cards. I switched to trying to use xinerama, but still havent quite licked it. I had two of the monitors connected to my nvidia card, and the third connected to the integrat…

Wi-Fi is almost ubiquitous now but that doesn't mean it always comes cheap. Hotels especially love to nickel and dime people for Wi-Fi, sometimes offering different prices for slightly different speeds and often restricting or charging extra for multiple devices. If you're traveling internationally and want to avoid roaming costs on your mobile devices it can be especially aggravating. Luckily Apple makes it simple to share the Wi-Fi connection on your Mac with your iPhone, iPad, or even other Macs. How to share your Mac's internet connection with your iPhone or iPad Before beginning, be aware that Internet Sharing works for any computer running OS X Lion (10.6) o…

At the company's annual shareholder's meeting today, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the Apple TV generated $1 billion in sales in 2013. This includes both device sales, as well as content sold on the Apple TV. Tim Cook indicated to shareholders that the device is no longer a hobby to Apple, according to Reuters: "It's a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days," Cook told shareholders at the company's headquarters in Cupertino. Now that the Apple TV is becoming increasingly important for Apple, and with a new version expected later this year, what direction would you like to see them take the device? Let us know below in the comments. Source: R…

"Apple retires Snow Leopard from support, leaves 1 in 5 Mac vulnerable to attacks," reads the headline on Computerworld. Is it the end for Apple's venerable OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" operating system, and are you at risk if you're still using it? Hardly. (Do the world a favor and don't click on that link. I put it here in the interest of full disclosure, but let's not reward bad behavior.) No, Apple hasn't "retired" Snow Leopard. In fact, Snow Leopard is alive and well and still available for sale in the Apple Store. Apple releases updates to software as they're needed. Mavericks, Lion and Mountain Lion all needed security updates. Snow Leopard didn't. End of stor…

Apple is offering a $25 iTunes gift card with a new Apple TV purchase. Store personnel were apparently informed this morning that this deal will run from today until next Wednesday, March 5. The deal is available in Apple Retail Stores as well as the Apple Online Store. This promotion could be leading up to the announcement of a new Apple TV, says 9to5Mac: This deal only reinforces rumors that we will see an updated Apple TV within the next few months or even weeks. If you aren’t in dire need of a new Apple TV, we recommend holding out to see what features the new TV may bring and if they aren’t to compelling we expect to see every deeper discounts on the 3rd genera…

I am running Win XP Pro SP2 on an IBM ThinkPad. I have a 16-gb SanDisk Cruzer Fit flash drive that the system won't recognize. When I plug it in I get a window with the following message: "Device Installer Error. Windows could not load the installer for Volume. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance." I have tried the "uninstall/search for new hardware" procedure from the device manager with no success. Other SanDisk drives (2,4 & 8-gb) work fine. The 16-gb Cruzer works on my HP laptop running Win 7 Pro. One other thing: in the Control Panel, the "Add New Hardware" function is not working; when I click on it, nothing happens. Hi. I know Microsoft is dropping XP in April. But what about us XP users that want to keep using the great OS. And one day I might decide to install XP all over again after cutoff. Do I have to manually download and install all the updates after SP3 by myself? Or can I still use auto update? I think Microsoft should make a .iso download of all the updates after SP3 for loyal XP customers. That would be the decent thing to do. And Bill Gates should tell that new guy to give XP the newest DirectX for a good-bye present. Continue reading...
