I have had several different error messages pop up to do with Office products and have four different malware and virus scanners to get rid of them. I have also used the repair option for Office, Outlook etc in the Program files. It may not be related, but one program that I have wanted to uninstall ever since it appeared is Linkey. For a start, everytime I chose "open link in a new tab" it opened a default search screen in a new tab instead. When I searched for why that was occurring I someone had suggested that it was not a safe link to open. However I do have bitDefender and it hasn't shown anything unsafe with the search results that have appeared. I also always ha…

Hi y´all. I am a real NOOBie and as such am proud to have come this far but now I am clueless. Note: I had to replace the atmark with (at) because the forum wont let me post the symbol... My pwd is /home/dennis I have a SSH connection from my ubuntu to my router running Coova on openWRT. I can issue the command: scp root(at)192.168.1.10:*.br0 /home/dennis I am then prompted to input my password and then it responds with: no such dirctory. When I repeat the process with: scp root(at)192.168.1.10:*.br0 /home it copies two files as expected but I cannot find them on my machine. Not in dir /home nor anywhere else. What am I doing wrong? I have a user, download. The directory is owned by download and is part of the download group. The permissions are 775. I, todd, am a member of the download group, but I cannot delete a file in the download directory. Something simple I am overlooking I am sure...but I do not see it. My assumption is that "todd", being a member of the "download" group should be able to delete a file. Todd Continue reading...

My bike (Victory Vision, not that it matters) utilizes an iPod for onboard music (in addition to FM, etc). I used iTunes when I was running Windows to manage the music on the iPod. What manager can I use to do the same now that I'm on Linux? I've heard that gtkpod won't work in 12.04 and that Amarok is buggy with the new(er) iPods although I haven't bothered to try either one of them. What manager can I use? Continue reading...

Hello... My wife uses Windows Vista, as it's what on her PC and she works in IT for the county here, so she needs to stay up on Windows. Her Laptop is starting to show age, such as a broken Ethernet connector and some pixels out in her screen. The hard drive in her machine has a 'restore' that is used, well you know. I have a Pentium PC that I run Linux on and was going to try and load her windows on it. I can remove the drive and mount, all but the 'restore' partition on Linux. I am kind of lost as how to mount it so I can copy the data and put it on a partition on another drive. Has anyone tried something like this? I was hoping that I could move it to a desktop m…

The wallpaper and apps on my iPhone 5s and why they're there, as of March 2014 Following my Mac dock inventory, I thought I'd share with you what my iPhone looks like. If you want more of this sort of thing, check out how Ally has her iPhone set up and how Rene has configured his iPad Air. Just like Rene, I'm something of a Mr. Default for my home screen. I can't blame taking screenshots and not wanting to confuse people as the reason. I just like the "standard" app configuration. Beyond that, though, I'm a big believer in using folders to keep my iPhone organized. Wallpaper: I turned off dynamic wallpapers almost immediately after I started using iOS 7 be…

Yuri Iwatani Kane has been one of the more reliable and insightful reporters covering the Apple beat over the years, so her forthcoming book on Apple promises to be an interesting read. Entitled "Haunted Empire: Apple After Steve Jobs," it comes out later this month. A bit about Tim Cook's assumption of power was recently posted in the Wall Street Journal: Cook proved a methodical and efficient CEO. Unlike Jobs, who seemed to operate on gut, Cook demanded hard numbers on projected cost and profits. Whereas Jobs had reveled in divisiveness, Cook valued collegiality and teamwork. Cook was also more visible and transparent with investors. Kane makes the case that …

Apple is putting the full court press on major music labels to do more exclusive deals like Beyonce's recent arrangement. Apple's reportedly pushing for deals in the wake of slowing download sales. Billboard: As music download sales decline--digital track sales fell 5.7% from 1.34 billion units to 1.26 billion units in 2013, according to Nielsen SoundScan--Apple is pressing music labels to think about possible windowing strategies as a way to buoy faltering sales. Beyonce's eponymous album, released in December, was available exclusively through iTunes for its first week. During that week the album sold one million copies online. So it's easy to understand why …

The DODOcase leather wallet for iPhone is everything you love about the DODOcases for iPad made pocket-sized. Made in San Francisco, the DODOCase leather wallet for iPhone combines fine, old world leather sewn onto sturdy book backing with three "slash" pockets and one window pocket to hold your credit and ID cards, and a tray to hold your iPhone. So how does it stack up? The DODOcase fits the iPhone very well. It easily snaps into and out of place, so you can keep it secure without making it inaccessible. There's an easy slider for the credit card pockets as well, so they're likewise easy in, easy out. As is typical with these types of cases, however, I have to fold m…

I am trying to retire a Windows XP machine with 12GB of program/user data on a three partitioned hard drive. I am using a 32 GB thumb drive as my back-up disk. I have tried using a backup and backup/copy approach using the Backup Wizard. Each time, the backup program runs for 1.5-2 hours, then abruptly stops at about 4 GB copied/backed-up. When I check the properties of my thumb drive, it shows 4 GB used, 26 GB available. What can I do to complete the backup? I intend to reformat the hard drive prior to recycling or giving away the machine. Continue reading...

Hi! I am using Windows XP Prof with SP 3. I have a CanoScan Lide 30 scanner and I have been using PhotoStudio to scan images but I want to use Windows XP's scanner software. When I go to 'Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and click Scanners and Cameras,' it lists the Scanner software and the webcam software so they are both installed. However, when I go into the 'Scanner and Camera Wizard' and click 'Next' to begin a scan, it automatically opens my Logitech webcam software instead of allowing me to choose between the two software options. What setting(s) need to be changed? Thanks in advance. Continue reading...

My Windows 8 was upgraded to a Windows 8.1 and then downgraded back to Windows 8 because the other version did not cooperate with my laptop whatsoever. I was wondering if there was a way that someone could help me with this issue where my webcam and audio is not working properly anymore. I'm believing that this issue is of the causation of the upgrading and downgrading of the computer's version of Windows. Either way, my computer's not fixing itself that's for sure.
