When Apple launched Find my Mac as an extension to their Find my iPhone system back in October of 2011 they included the ability to lock a Mac down so that it couldn't be accessed or rebooted into alternate modes. The lock, however, was implemented using a simple 4-digit passcode (PIN). That meant, with only 10,000 possible combinations, the passcode was susceptible to brute force attack. That's nothing new. It's been known since the start. What's new is that automated tools have now been developed to make the attack both easier and faster, and they're being reported on without a lot of context. So, is it something you should worry about? A 4-digit passcode is the same…

An impressive Kickstarter project out of Japan was launched recently called Ring. No, it doesn't involve a haunted videotape. This smart ring detects movement with enough fidelity to recognize gestures drawn in the air by an index finger and transmit them to your iPhone. Using the iOS app, users can program those gestures to execute commands, such as translating into text, launching apps, or approving transactions. A small sensor on the inside has to be touched in order to initiate a command, plus there's a vibration motor and LEDs in there to let you know about incoming notifications from your iPhone. There's going to be a Ring store which highlights apps that make use o…

Finish, the Apple Design Award (ADA) winning productivity app for iPhone, is going free. The new, free version will be limited to 10 tasks timeless tasks. If you want more tasks, or you want to be able to set due dates, you can upgrade to Finish More via a $0.99 in-app-purchase (IAP). Designer Ryan Orbuch is also teasing what's coming next — Finish for iPad, with a new, tablet-optimized user experience and iCloud sync. The decision to go free was motivated by a desire to get even more people to give Finish a try. The App Store remains a tough, competitive, sometimes impenetrable market and customers are still hesitant to part with even a dollar or two up front. …

I'm getting some really ugly graphics in a few games on windows 8/8.1 with Intel GMA 4500m onboard. This only happens when the drivers from Intel's website or windows update is installed but it looks normal and lags with the basic display driver. Screenshot Games that run from the desktop are fine. Hello, I am visiting my wife from overseas, and was checking her family notebook that is used almost entirely by her sons, and found two problems which may or may not be related: 1. Hard drive: The OS (C:) drive on the HP notebook is almost completely full, with only 2.44 GB of the 73 GB capacity available, but when I check the (C:) drive under OS it doesn't list anywhere near 70 GB of data in the files it shows for the C: drive. 2. Updates: The notebook errors out whenever I try to install Microsoft .NET Framework updates, producing a "Code 13EC Unknown error. I checked the update logs, and .NET updates have been failing for several months, poss…

This problem only started recently (I don't remember exactly). Something is wrong with the Nvidia card. I can't open the Nvidia control panel and the card doesn't show in device manager and now I am stuck with my crappy Intel graphics card. I tried going to Device Manager, uninstalling the driver, restarting computer and attempting to install latest drivers for the Nvidia card (can't install because it says there isn't an Nvidia card in the computer). My laptop is the TravelMate 8572G-6647. Continue reading...

Hi there, I have a computer that I need to reinstall Windows 7 Professional on. This computer does not have an optical drive, but does have several USB slots. I have a 64GB USB key that I am trying to use to create a bootable USB install disk. I have been sticking to using the "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" to create the USB drive after having downloaded a third party application and getting a bunch of bloat ware and malware from the program (even though it was a highly rated CNET download). I have read several different methods for how to create the USB key, most of which have not worked for one reason or another. The furthest I have gotten is an err…

After multiple scans with MSE, MSD, Malware Bytes, they state that the Rovnix Win32.genlB and C also DOS/Rovnix.V have been removed, but they keep showing up to be removed over again. After a full scan, a virus that cannot be found or removed comes up as error code Ox805023 and boot:\\PHYSICALDRIVER\Partition0(NTFS)-arrow sign(Obuscator). Does anyone know how to remove these permanently? The computer seem to run normally, but I do not want any extra visitors. A Moved from XP Repair and Recovery Forum. Continue readin…
