I have recently did a System Restore on my HP Envy Notebook. After doing so I discovered a lot of programs running on my computer that I did not authorized. I also noticed a lot of programs that were running that were also hidden. I've noticed that my computer have several modules or programs set up that deals with Remote settings. Is there anyway I can remove these items? Continue reading...

Hello, I just bought this great laptop & I got Windows 8.1 on it. For the last few days, the touch pad has not been doing its oirignal functions (double finger zoom, switch between windows by sliding from the left, etc.) For days now, I cannot enable the original functions that my touchpad had. I've looked everywhere online, but the same answer I cannot do. I read that I would need to go to Control Panel-> Mouse -> device settings. I can't find any device settings no matter where I looked. How can I enable it so that my touchpad works? Thank you Continue reading...

Was just using my PC when suddenly everything has gone dark. The PC itself still appears to be running and the fans are going but everything else, the mouse keyboard, both screens, even the little light that says the computers on aren't getting any power or signal from it. Im running Windows 7 if that helps but I get the feeling this is going to be a hardware problem. Any one know whats happened and more importantly if I'm going to be able to fix it on my near as non existent student budget? Continue reading...

I was running parallels with xp. Yesterday, my xp crashed. Parallels support was unable to repair xp. They advised me to purchase windows 7 iso. Microsoft does not sell this product any longer, but was advised that retailers who carry microsoft products would. I am not sure I understand the difference between what is an exe. and iso. If I purchase windows 7 the .exe will not work with parallels? Where do I get a windows 7 iso file? I see there are plenty of downloads for iso files, but require the activation. Parallels support also suggested windows 8.1. It appears an upgrade would not be the answer. Would installing the full version of wind…

My coworker wrote a VB.net program and it only works when the computer's display size is set to small. Anything bigger and the GUI gets jumbled together. Is there anything I can do on MY end to fix this without bothering the programmer? I am putting the program on many of my coworker's computers whose display sizes are set to medium and large. I really don't want to mess with their settings. I've tried adjusting all the program settings (disable visual themes, desktop composition, etc.) to no avail. Please let me know if there is another way I can fix the issue without adjusting the code... Thank you! Continue reading...

I've never had an issue with this program before until today. I kept getting a message that the computer was not being protected so I tried to update, tried restarting the program, tried restarting the computer and finally after none of that worked (kept getting the error code when I tried to scan), I uninstalled and re-installed only to have the same thing happen... I don't have any other virus protection on the computer so I know it is not because of that and the computer has never had this issue. HELP!! Continue reading...

Today I noticed that my fan would kick when I leave my Laptop idle. Laptop is a Lenovo y410p running on windows 8.1. After some research, I downloaded Process Explorer to see what program was causing this. exactly after 30 seconds of inactivity, two processes of conhost.exe and bmx.exe would come up, and the fan kick in, which means it was taking a lot cpu usage. I know conhost.exe is a normal windows legit program, but I couldn't find info about bmx.exe. I tracked down bmx.exe and it creates itself in my temp folder, even if I delete it, it will appear again. As you can see, when I highlight it, it shows a very strange command line, something li…

Ubuntu 13.10 Here is my situation: My work laptop uses a NIS configuration. While directly connected directly to the work network, NIS is able to bind to the server without issue (unless of course the server is down...). However, while away from work, I cannot directly connect to NIS. My laptop takes forever to boot up (if I switch to tty2 I can stop the autofs and ypbind service). ypbind will only work when I attach my laptop to the VPN making those NIS servers accessible. After some googling, I tried setting YPBIND_MAXWAIT in /etc/environment but this did not appear to take effect. Is there anything else I can do (such as /etc/nsswitch.conf) to prevent NIS f…

Kali Linux 1.0.6 looks like it's going to be my "go to" Distro from here on out. I started with Ubuntu 12.04LTS but didn't care for Unity. Moved to Mint 15 MATE which was a bit better. Then I found Point Linux 2.2 which is Debian based with MATE DE and stuck with it for quite a while. After finding out about Tweak Tools for GNOME I played around with Ubuntu/GNOME and it was decent enough but Kali is Debian based with GNOME 3 Classic so it's modern with the "old school" look and feel that I love AND it has pre-installed SDR support out of the box so I can play around with Gqrx to check out RF stuff with my rtl dongle. Sure, it also has a ton of other stuff installed that…

Please let me first start off by saying I have absolutly NO computer skills. None. That being said, I have an old PC that had a crash, a friend removed Windows and installed Lubuntu 12.10 (according to what he wrote on the disc) My computer worked fairly well, it was a bit of a change, but something I got used to. Everyday, I would get update reminders from Lubuntu that drove me nuts and I dismissed them, but when I finally got annoyed and accepted the update, I lost my ability to watch YT or pretty much anything that has motion while using Firefox. If I switch to Chromium, I can get certian vids, but not all of them. The videos that work, look excellent. The s…

So... I have a RHEL 5.8 running on a Dell's PowerEdge R720, and i need to use two USB to serial adapters on both machines, I need to send and receive text messages between this machines. On Windows 7, I'm using the Hercules serial terminal, configured to 9600 baud, 8 data size, no parity, and no handshake. When i plug in the USB to serial adapter on the RHEL machine, ttyUSB0 shows up, this makes me think that the Kernel recognize the adapter, and the same for windows, a COM# port becomes available. On RHEL, i'm using cat /dev/ttyUSB0 9600 cs8 -cstopb -parenb and echo "This is my message" >/dev/ttyUSB0 commands trying to send and receive messages but nothing s…

Pre-paid plans are becoming a more-and-more viable option these days, especially if carriers continue to make improvements like Verizon has just done with the introduction of their new "ALLSET PLANS" (no more all-caps from here on out, mkay). These new plans start at $35-a-month for basic phones, but if you're smart and opt for a smartphone, it starts at a mere $45-a-month. That low Allset plan price includes unlimited 'Anytime Minutes' calls and unlimited messaging (including international messaging to Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico). The base plan offers a measly 500MB data allotment each month, though thanks to the magic of pre-pay you can get more as you need it. …

While Apple absolutely did not leak one on their website, elaborating on why that wasn't a 13-inch iPad Pro got me thinking again about what could be. Yes, a bigger iPhone 6 still feels far more important, but that doesn't make the mental exercise any less interesting. So, beyond how Apple could scale the iPad display to 13-inches, how else could Apple differentiate a larger tablet? What other features could Apple add to make an iPad truly "pro"? 1. Keyboard cover The original iPad launched with an... awkward Keyboard Dock that Apple discontinued a short time later. Since then, Apple has added supported for Bluetooth keyboards, including their own Bluetooth ke…

The big news this morning is the official introduction of Apple CarPlay, and its initial batch of partners. One of those, Volvo, will be demonstrating at this week's Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. But, for those of us not able to attend, Volvo has put out a short promotional video showing off CarPlay integration in its next generation in-car systems that will begin with the all new XC90. The interface is familiar, yet simplified, and integrates seamlessly with the cars touchscreen based control system. What's great to see is that – for Volvo drivers at least – CarPlay works alongside the standard control system, giving you easy access back to the cars own main contr…

I have an external hard drive. It had some problems so I ran either Windows XP or Windows 7's Explorer's check and recover routine. I have 2 computers and don't remember which I used. It put the bad sectors into files which it organized into multiple directories on the drive. So far, ok. Using Win XP, I was reviewing the files it found. My fingers stuttered and I inadvertently dragged (moved) one of the directories into another. i.e., Dir 2 is now a subdirectory of Dir 1. The Undo Move option would not work. I have tried cutting, copying, moving but cannot have access to the folder. Error says Directory is not accessible. Access is denied. I tried doing this …
