I have a CentOS 6 box acting as a firewall, gateway and router. Behind my gateway is a VPN concentrator with an IPSEC tunnel to a branch office. My servers sit on 172.16.0.0/24, desktops sit on 172.16.1.0/24. The VPN concentrator sits on 172.16.0.4 and has an ipsec tunnel to a branch office with 192.168.1.0/24. I am able to ping any address on the 192.168.1.0/24 network from the firewall which is multihomed at 172.16.0.1 and 172.16.1.1. However, if I try to ping 192.168.X.X from my desktop PC (172.16.1.16), I get TTL expired errors. I'm sure I need a policy route somewhere. I just need some ideas. Thanks! Continue reading...

Apologies if this is a little vague. I'm trying to build up my "hands on" experience with Linux. I've done some things like installing Linux at home, installing and configuring applications like Apache, MySQL, etc. However, I'm looking for something more in depth. I've found some good online resources like these online labs: Timed Sys Admin Lab Servers - TrueAbility.com Good Walkthrough Documentation - Linuxtopia linuxnewbieguide.org Does anyone have other recommended resources? Thanks in advance Continue reading...

I have a box running Debian Wheezy: 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.51-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux This box is being used as a cash register. Openbravo POS 2.30.2 (written in Java) is the only graphical program used each day. Hardware in use: ELO touchscreen (USB), bar code scanner (USB), and Epson receipt printer (USB). Every Friday and Saturday (our busiest days), this box goes down on average once per day with the gnome-session Fatal IO Error 11. It would be really, really nice if this didn't happen. The box hasn't gone down on the other days of the week (which are less busy). As far as I know, this error doesn't actually indicate a problem with gnome-session; …

Hello all, I inherited a debian squeeze node with a simple LAMP stack installed. The backup 'solution' they set up is a simple USB disk hooked onto the server with a LUKS+ext4 partition. Previously the files were simply tar-d together and copied to the disk, now I use rdiff-backup instead. The problem is, that the disk randomly disconnects during backup. After the disk is gone, only a hard-reboot helps. Until that, the disk is not mountable again. According to SMART, there are no errors, everything seems to be fine. The node is in a remote DC, so physical inspection is not really possible. It seems, that the tar solution worked, but rdiff-backup kills the connecti…

A report today suggests that Apple will be retiring the regular, non-Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro in the second half of 2014. The news comes via Digitimes, a somewhat hit-and-miss source that cites insiders in the supply chain, and claims that Apple will be taking the MacBook Pro line Retina only: The sources pointed out that Apple has been reducing its MacBook Pro prices, narrowing the price gap between the MacBook Pro and the one equipped with Retina. Apple stopped producing the 15-inch MacBook Pro in 2013 and will end production of its 13-inch model in 2014. So while the source isn't exactly bulletproof, it does make a certain amount of sense. The cheapest Ret…

There are some stories floating around about CarPlay being run by, powered by, or something by QNX, BlackBerry's embedded operating system division. A better way to phrase it is that CarPlay "takes over the user experience" of in-vehicule infotainment systems running QNX. Here's the thing: Apple doesn't make or license embedded operating systems for smart cars just like they don't make or license embedded operating systems for TVs. They simply hook into what's already there, be it a Ferrari or a Panasonic, via CarPlay or Apple TV. Sure, there are substantial differences. Hooking into TVs is unidirectional, has been done for decades, and currently benefits from the ubiq…

Manually backing up your contacts is a great way to protect against an iCloud sync — or user action! — gone horribly wrong. But having a good backup is only the first step. Next comes restoring it. Hopefully you never have to use your contacts backup but if you do, follow along and we'll show you how to get the back on your Mac, safe and sound. How to restore Contacts on your Mac using a previously created archive Launch the Contacts app on your Mac. In the top menu bar, click on File and then Import... Navigate to the the place you last saved a contact archive. These are typically a .abbu file type. Click Open. That's it. The Contacts app will then res…

Since Back to the Future Part II debuted in 1989, many of have dreamed of owning our own hoverboard, and now an entity called HUVr Tech claims to have made that dream a reality. In a video featuring appearances from celebrities including Christopher Lloyd, Tony Hawk, and Moby, HUVr demonstrates it's supposed gravity-battling skateboard, modeled after the ones found in the movies. Going further, HUVr says that the board is controlled with an iPhone app that also tracks speed, distance, path, and travel time. The app is supposed to connect over Bluetooth. HUVr Tech says that the boards are coming in December. A hoax to be sure, but it begs the question: if it ever did co…

In Windows XP Pro I have a lot of folders with a lot of items in them, and I've noticed often when I go in, it shows the list, but then it disappears and it says "Searching for items..." in the status bar at the bottom for more than 10 seconds up to a few minutes. I can understand it looking for the folders and file names in the folder, but it makes no sense that it should take this long just to show a bunch of names. Even if it's looking for icons, I've seen it still load the list and then show the icons later; I'm perfectly fine with that, and would prefer that to having a blank page for a while. Linux shows the names fast, Mac, Android, you name it. Here's my ques…

Support for Windows XP is ending in April 2014. Is it possible to upgrade my PC from XP to Vista (rather than Windows 7 or 8) in order to extend the life of my machine? I don't think my PC could cope with Windows 7 and in any case I'd have to do a clean install and lose all my programs. I don't want to buy a new machine yet as Windows 7 seems to have a limited life and I hate Windows 8. I'd rather wait for Windows 9. If I can upgrade to Vista, where would I get the installation disk from? And any idea when Vista support will end? Continue reading...

Just installed new hard drive on my old Dell Inspiron E1705 (9400). Now after installing the pc's OS (version 2005 XP), it's now asking for the SP2 cd rom. I down loaded the program on both to flash drive and onto a CD. Then I tried loading both formats onto the Dell. But the PC is still asking for the SP3CD Rom. Question: Where can I pick one (sp3 cd rom) from. I know time is running out for windows XP but for now with this PC I think I'm safer running it with XP rather than Windows 8. Not sure my PC can handle it because my PC I think is 32 bit. Continue reading...

All my games were okay before.. and now there are errors.. This started 4 days ago when I downloaded "Path of Exile" after i install the "pathOfExileInstaller.msi" while the game(poe) was patching, I opened my ragnarok online game and there was an pop-up error "Cannot init d3d or grf file has a problem" so I thought it was just an error because I opened two online games at the same time... so i closed the ragnarok and finished the POE patch/dwnload. when the 'Path of exile' was finished patching I started to launch the game and an error appeared - The D3D device has a non-zero reference count, meaning some objects were not released. - Failed resetting…

Hi All. I am looking to upgrade my rig and I am wondering which way to go is best. I currently have a 4 core processor with 2 graphics cards running in crossfire mode. I am looking at getting a 6 or 8 core processor and I am not sure which combination will be best. Should I get a straight forward mobo with crossfire and continue to use two graphics cards or would it be better to get an APU processor and combine it with one graphics card? What do you think? Cheers. Continue reading...
