I am not blessed with a machine that has HDMI out, so as you could imagine, getting my display up on my TV is a few steps further then plug and play. Right now I am using a LinkStyle VGA-HDMI converter and it does ok, but the picture is less than desirable, and carrying around the power, VGA, HDMI, and 3.5 audio cables is annoying. So I did some research and found a USB driven external video card from IOGEAR. But before I buy I need to know if it will work with ubuntu 12.04 without much trouble? They offer driver support off the website (which currently will not load up) but im not sure if they support linux in any way. Im also concerned about the video quality going out …

Hi Our client uses Termtek terminals to connect to their Universe platform. More terminals needed and we can't get any. The alternative is to get winboxes and run wintegrate or try and get a linux terminal working. Configured xterm with keybindings that I need for the F1-F5 keys. In xterm session these bindings work, however when I connect via telnet to the Universe sessions, they don't. For F1 I get ^[OP. I need EX and return. F2 I need + and return and so forth. I have been trawling the net with not much luck. Indications are its to to do with the terminal settings rather than on the host side however I can't seem to find anything concrete. I found that the the backs…

Mysql says in phpmyadmin stats: Quote: Key reads: 889.7 k The number of physical reads of a key block from disk. If Key_reads is big, then your key_buffer_size value is probably too small. The cache miss rate can be calculated as Key_reads/Key_read_requests. It is just few minutes after mysql restart. There is mentioned key buffer size, but when i add the size recommended by MysqlTuner1.3 (3.5G) mysql wont start saying "Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon." Code: df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/simfs 157G 52G 105G 33% / /dev/simfs 157G 52G 105G 33% /var/named/chroot/var/run/dbus …

I have written something that I think might be useful to the wider community, but I've taken it as far as I can and now I need help. Some of you may be familiar with Philip's Music Writer (pmw). It is based on a simple but brilliant idea: a language in which sheet music can be encoded in ASCII strings. You can (in principle) create a file of pmw code in any editor, then use the pmw program to convert it into music manuscript in postscript format. I use it quite a lot. The trouble is that while pmw files are easy to edit (and there is an excellent manual to help you add what you want) creating a syntactically correct pmw file that even approximates to the correct notes…

Tylt has separated itself from the pack of Apple accessory vendors by thoughtful and unique industrial designs; they don't quite look like anything else out there. The Band Car Charger is no different - it's not your average-looking car charger. It's a premium design that commands a premium price. Is the design worth the extra money? The Band Car Charger measures two feet long - pretty average for an auto charging cable, and sports a flat, wide ribbon cable that doesn't tangle up like thinner cables do. Sheathed in silicone, Tylt makes the Band in four bold colors - very vibrant green, red, and blue, along with a more understated black, if you prefer the traditional lo…

Dong Nguyen is the developer behind one of the most infamous iOS games to appear (then disappear) in recent memory: the incredibly simple yet challenging game Flappy Bird. Now, for the first time, he's speaking about his experience. Rolling Stone: Since taking Flappy Bird down, he says he's felt "relief. I can't go back to my life before, but I'm good now." As for the future of his flapper, he's still turning down offers to purchase the game. Nguyen refuses to compromise his independence. But will Flappy Bird ever fly again? "I'm considering it," Nguyen says. He's not working on a new version, but if he ever releases one it will come with a "warning," he says: "Plea…

The first night of the iTunes Festival at SXSW had a pretty stellar line up, including Imagine Dragons. Besides completely rocking Austin, Texas, they also took time out to talk music with Jim Dalrymple of The Loop: “The separation between the artist and the listener is getting smaller every day. Yes, albums are great and the artwork is great, but our iTunes Festival show is being streamed to millions of people tonight—that never would have happened back in the day.” If you haven't yet caught the set from the opening night of the iTunes Festival, I urge you to fire up your Apple TV, iOS device or iTunes and take a look. Apple has a habit of attracting stellar a…

Have you updated to iOS 7.1 yet? It's been just over 48 hours since iOS 7.1 hit, so have you updated yet? A point update – no matter how much some of us are waiting on it – doesn't usually draw the same excitement as a full blown new iOS version, but there's no denying that a lot of us have been waiting on iOS 7.1. There will also be those folks who are happy enough to wait it out and see the feedback come in first before thinking about updating. So, which camp are you in? iOS 7.1 brings with it new features such as CarPlay support and improvements to the interface and to iTunes Radio. But, perhaps more importantly – for some of us – it seems to have brought an end …

Apple's Eddy Cue sat down to talk about the iTunes Festival's first appearance in the U.S. This week sees several artists, such as Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, and Kendrick Lamar perform in Austin, Texas, coinciding with South-by-Southwest (SXSW). While the iTunes Festival has had great success in the U.K. over the last seven years, U.S. music fans have long wondered if the event would make the trip across the Atlantic. Cue says that it was the right mix of elements that led to this week's Festival according to The Loop's Jim Dalrymple, writing for Fortune: "I wasn't sure we would ever bring it to the U.S.," Cue said. "We have something so special at the festival in L…

I am trying to use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files from my old WinXP 32-bit laptop to my new Wn7 64-bit laptop. I downloaded the XP application usng the Win7 laptop and transferred it to the XP laptop and installed it there. I used my existing wireless network as the transfer medium. I copied the transfer key from the old to the new laptop, and the transfer appeared to progress saying there were 390 files, which seems a bit low. When 390 have been transferred, both computers report the following error: Windows Easy Transfer is unable to continue. Please reboot the computer and try again. I rebooted both laptops once and WET results in the same error. Sh…

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 6400/1505 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.73 Gz, 2 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD (7200rpm)) Laptop with Windows XP and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed as dual boot. I installed Ubuntu as a seperate partition, not using WUBI. Since support for XP is running out this April, I have to upgrade to Windows 7. I would like to know if I could safely upgrade XP to Windows 7 (i understand the settings and programs cannot be ported to the the upgraded version of Windows and have to be done manually) without disturbing my Ubutnu partition and the GRUB that boots up when I turn on the computer. What are my options if that is not possible. I know one option is to completely wip…

I was not doing anything, just watching the screen saver running. No recent downloads. No game playing. I hadn't even moved my mouse in quite a while. The only thing that I can think of is Avast wanted me to renew my subscription. They said I only had a few days left. When I booted the computer back up it went directly to the startup repair. Eventually it said I had one root cause The PCW.SYS is corrupt. Since then I've gotten Root cause found: Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully. But then it will say that the problem could not be repaired! On then next boot I'm back at the same place. Lately "Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully" has sh…

About 6 hours ago I finished an update for Windows 7, after the restart, I defaulted to a radically incorrect resolution. My generic Dell S1709W monitor has been installed now for almost 2 years, and with multiple windows re-installs, has always had a native windows driver for it that has worked flawlessly and offered the resolution (it's native) of 1440x900 @60hz. With the reboot, it removed the Dell driver, defaulted to the GPNP Analog and forced it to 1024x768 with no options that are accurate for the monitor itself. What I have tried so far: 1.) Shutting down, unplugging the monitor from the graphics card, removing computers power supply for 60 sec…

Hello! I have a question. I want to know if I can have at least 3 or 4 anti-antiviruses in my windows 7 starter netbook. The reason I am asking is because when I ran Malware bytes Anti-Malware, it found some viruses (frogfiles updater and other files) in which MSE couldn't find. It is the free version and it's not in real time protection. I also downloaded the following things: TDSSkiller- found no viruses Hitman Pro- found two files viruses AdwCleaner- removed my Camtasia Studio 8 (I have no idea why), Browser Defender, and other files (the last time I ran it, it didn't remove Camtasia Studio 8) JRT- removed Free YouTube Downloader and maybe other fil…
