I have my windows 8 pro x64 laptop behaving very oddly: i can shut it down, but if i instead command it to restart, it freezes after BIOS. The machine is dual booting with Debian, using GRUB 1.98. The two OSs are on different partitions of the same SSD (partition 0 is system reserved, partition 1 for windows, partition 2 for Linux). Restarting from Linux returns no issues: this let me think there must be something wrong from windows. If i ask Windows to restart, laptop freezes after POST (i suppose, HP screen mask operations) but before accessing to GRUB screen. The issue doesn't happen shutting down from windows and then turning on the machine again. NOTE: …

I've been having this problem off and on since I bought this computer. While navigating some websites, the pages will hang while loading (the IE tab will say something like waiting for <website name>), and then a page will come up that says "This Page Can Not be Displayed" This page will have some suggestions on how to resolve the issue, etc, including a button that says "Fix Connection Problems" Clicking on the button runs the trouble shooter. Depending on the website, the results of the troubleshooter will say "Your computer appears to be configured correctly, but the device or resource <website name> is not responding." Or it will say, "<website…

I bought a laptop from eBay, and it worked great for a while. no errors or anything. Then it randomly started saying at the bottom of the desktop; "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine." BUT! It doesn't say it all the time. Just every couple days or so, it'll pop up. Nothing else seems to happen, but I'm afraid it may stop working if it's not fixed. The seller sent me a disc to fix it, but I haven't used it yet, because I saw another person had asked about this same thing. I got the diagnostic tool that it talked about on the other thread, and this is the info; "Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0): ---------------------------------------…

I am currently using Windows 7 Home, along with Windows Live Mail. When I attach a word document to an email to send out, and then look at that email in my sent folder, I get the message in a pink box "Prohibited File Type. This message contains attachment whose file type is considered dangerous. The file has been deactivated." this problem has just recently started with a word document that I attached to numerous emails in the past, with no problems previously. I can forward the message to my Iphone or Ipad email address (same one I use on my PC), and the attachment opens with no problems. What can I do to correct this problem? I have just received from a safe sender…

I recently did some written work on a word document on my laptop, and saved it to a memory stick and upon removing the memory stick, supposedly it was still in use and should not have been unplugged at this time. and now every time i turn on my laptop, i get a very long message which briefly sais that windows has encountered a problem with a device connected to your computer and it tells me to restart the laptop. however this message is still appearing every time i restart my laptop, and therefore i cannot use my laptop what so ever. However i currently have 3 previously made laptop recovery discs labelled, recovery disc 1, recovery disc 2 , and recovery disc 3, whic…

Hi everybody, I have ransomware on a computer, and cannot enter safe mode. I used a clean computer and downloaded the newest Windows Defender Offline and burned to CD. I boot from WDO but then the "scan" options are grayed out. I have had ransomware twice before and used WDO successfully. To see if there was an error with my current WDO, I tried booting the WDO cd on my clean computer, and it works perfectly; the "scan" options are not grayed out, and WDO says I am currently up to date and protected, whereas when I use the same WDO cd on the infected computer, it says I am not up to date, and does not even allow me to scan because "scan" is grayed out. Both compu…

My Surface Pro 2 was working properly until it was updating today and it said it failed. I can't remember exactly what it said afterwards it said but it was something like I need to repair it and install default secure boot key. But I'm not entirely sure what to do. Every time I turn on the tablet, it would open up this setting (picture below) Also after this incident, the AVG Antivirus program would detect an infected file under C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe I click on Protect Me and it does something to it but when I restart the tablet, it warns me about the virus again. Can someone tell me what to do or if anyone else had this problem. Also the…

I have a 2TB WD MyBook 1110 plugged into my PC. Code: Bus 003 Device 006: ID 1058:1110 Western Digital Technologies, Inc. Every PC in the house accesses it through NFS and it gets used quite heavily. About twice a year something happens and the kernel remounts it read-only. I am not blessed with a machine that has HDMI out, so as you could imagine, getting my display up on my TV is a few steps further then plug and play. Right now I am using a LinkStyle VGA-HDMI converter and it does ok, but the picture is less than desirable, and carrying around the power, VGA, HDMI, and 3.5 audio cables is annoying. So I did some research and found a USB driven external video card from IOGEAR. But before I buy I need to know if it will work with ubuntu 12.04 without much trouble? They offer driver support off the website (which currently will not load up) but im not sure if they support linux in any way. Im also concerned about the video quality going out …

Hi Our client uses Termtek terminals to connect to their Universe platform. More terminals needed and we can't get any. The alternative is to get winboxes and run wintegrate or try and get a linux terminal working. Configured xterm with keybindings that I need for the F1-F5 keys. In xterm session these bindings work, however when I connect via telnet to the Universe sessions, they don't. For F1 I get ^[OP. I need EX and return. F2 I need + and return and so forth. I have been trawling the net with not much luck. Indications are its to to do with the terminal settings rather than on the host side however I can't seem to find anything concrete. I found that the the backs…

Mysql says in phpmyadmin stats: Quote: Key reads: 889.7 k The number of physical reads of a key block from disk. If Key_reads is big, then your key_buffer_size value is probably too small. The cache miss rate can be calculated as Key_reads/Key_read_requests. It is just few minutes after mysql restart. There is mentioned key buffer size, but when i add the size recommended by MysqlTuner1.3 (3.5G) mysql wont start saying "Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon." I have written something that I think might be useful to the wider community, but I've taken it as far as I can and now I need help. Some of you may be familiar with Philip's Music Writer (pmw). It is based on a simple but brilliant idea: a language in which sheet music can be encoded in ASCII strings. You can (in principle) create a file of pmw code in any editor, then use the pmw program to convert it into music manuscript in postscript format. I use it quite a lot. The trouble is that while pmw files are easy to edit (and there is an excellent manual to help you add what you want) creating a syntactically correct pmw file that even approximates to the correct notes…

Tylt has separated itself from the pack of Apple accessory vendors by thoughtful and unique industrial designs; they don't quite look like anything else out there. The Band Car Charger is no different - it's not your average-looking car charger. It's a premium design that commands a premium price. Is the design worth the extra money? The Band Car Charger measures two feet long - pretty average for an auto charging cable, and sports a flat, wide ribbon cable that doesn't tangle up like thinner cables do. Sheathed in silicone, Tylt makes the Band in four bold colors - very vibrant green, red, and blue, along with a more understated black, if you prefer the traditional lo…

Dong Nguyen is the developer behind one of the most infamous iOS games to appear (then disappear) in recent memory: the incredibly simple yet challenging game Flappy Bird. Now, for the first time, he's speaking about his experience. Rolling Stone: Since taking Flappy Bird down, he says he's felt "relief. I can't go back to my life before, but I'm good now." As for the future of his flapper, he's still turning down offers to purchase the game. Nguyen refuses to compromise his independence. But will Flappy Bird ever fly again? "I'm considering it," Nguyen says. He's not working on a new version, but if he ever releases one it will come with a "warning," he says: "Plea…

The first night of the iTunes Festival at SXSW had a pretty stellar line up, including Imagine Dragons. Besides completely rocking Austin, Texas, they also took time out to talk music with Jim Dalrymple of The Loop: “The separation between the artist and the listener is getting smaller every day. Yes, albums are great and the artwork is great, but our iTunes Festival show is being streamed to millions of people tonight—that never would have happened back in the day.” If you haven't yet caught the set from the opening night of the iTunes Festival, I urge you to fire up your Apple TV, iOS device or iTunes and take a look. Apple has a habit of attracting stellar a…
