    (1) Simply put, please, what have these "updates" contained? (2) To WHAT, exactly, are we XPers now vulnerable? (3) RE: Service Pack 3 - shows on my programs list, but ONLY the name: no frequency, no date of origin, NO SPACE CONSUMPTION. I notice on my Updates History there ARE updates for the SP3, but the history does not go back far enough to show when (IF?) it actually down-loaded. DID it down-load? Thanks! Continue reading...

I have a WindowsXP Pro tower. It has SP 3. I have been deciding to add more ram to my computer because it only has 512MB RAM. It's got an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz and an ASUS AGP-V7700 Deluxe v5.33 AKA GeForce 2 GTS. The mother board(The ECS P4M800PRO-M 1.0A) says it's only capable of DDR 2533 or DDR 400 RAM. So I went out and got some DDR3 RAM and I install it. Then I try to boot it and all it does is beep. I was wondering how can I fix this so it works. Continue reading...

I run Windows 8 on a Dell Inspiron 7720 Laptop. About a week ago, a hardware scan showed that my hard drive was failing, so I took steps to replace the hard drive. I made a system image (it took me 4 tries to successfully image, including running a chkdsk on the drive), and also made a recovery disk to boot the machine. I read articles that recommended a recovery drive instead of a disk, so I went ahead and made one of those as well. On the surface, it looks like I'm ready to install the new hard drive. This fantasy lasted until I tried to boot to the recovery drive, and I discovered that the BIOS was set to the UEFI boot menu and I had to change it to legacy to…

To: everyone who has an opinion on Windows 8.1 What IS that opinion? I'm trying to figure out what more people think about Windows 8.1 vs Windows 8. So far, I've found that most people dislike it. They think Windows 8.1 has some potentially good features, but those features aren't worth the problems it causes or the features it gets rid of. What do you think? What did Windows 8 improve? What did it make worse? And what did it fail to address at all? If you have an answer to any of these questions, or an opinion outside of these questions, then please respond. I want to know what you think! To: the Windows team I wish you would make the start menu button…

Hello, This is my first post so please bare with me! I have just soldered in a new power jack into an Asus Laptop Model A54H-SX254V. There is definitely power going into the laptop. When I power the laptop on I can hear the fan and the 2 green lights flash momentarily, then nothing. The fan remains going until I power off. I have checked each connection but am wondering if I have damaged the motherboard with my soldering. I thought it appeared okay. This is my first attempt at soldering a power jack, I had someone more experienced with me. The main connection I would have thought may have been the culprit is the power button cable, but I have …

Out of the blue, I ran a quick Microsoft security essential scan and found a couple of viruses. It told me to download Windows Defender to another computer or jump drive and run Win. Defender Offline, but it wouldn't let me. So, I ran Microsoft Safety Scanner (Windows 7) and it found the two viruses (Virus: Win64/Rovnix.gen!C and Virus: DOS/Rovnix.W). I then got a message that said they were both "partially" removed and for me to click on a link to submit a ticket (which brought me to the Windows Community). I'm lost because I'm not a techy by any means. Does anyone know where this came from or, more importantly, how I get rid of it COMPLETELY and not just "p…

I received a call at 8:00am this morning (Sat 3/29) supposedly from a Microsoft call center wanting me to check my OS for malicious spyware. It was obviously from overseas because the 2 people I talked to had very heavy accents. They asked to to check for errors and when over 7,000 popped up I was switched to a tech who wanted me to go to the website www.ammyy.com. They would not tell me why I was being called and not sent a message and the number they were calling from was blocked. Fearing hackers I hung up. They called back but I didn't answer. Was this a legitimate call? Is there a problem I should be aware of? Thank you. Continue reading...

My computer first got had conduit unwillingly installed. Then the next time I booted up Regedit kept insisting on registry edits and would not allow me to proceed after saying no 50 times I finally realized that I was not going to be permitted to proceed until I said yes. After I did then the machine automatically shutdown and then it cam back up with this UKash virus. I attempted to restart into Last known good configuration, but it still came up showing the UKash screen. When I shutdown and attempted to boot into safe mode, whether safe mode, safe mode with networking or safe mode to command prompt, each attempt result in coming up to the login screen follo…

I am running CentOS 6.5 with a zfs file system shared via samba. When I create a regular file from a remote machine (windows and linux), the file inherits the proper selinux context. However, when I create a directory, it gets the default context of "file_t". This is also true when creating files/dirs locally on the centos box. Running restorecon sets the correct context. Here is my entry in file_contexts.local: Code: /zstorage/public(/.*)? system_u:object_r:samba_share_t:s0 Is this possibly just zfs and selinux not playing nice together? Continue reading...
