I have the latest version of Windows 8. Recently I received one of those messages from HP that I could be at risk for a virus and should turn on Windows Defender. I can not get it to turn on. I've tried the run administrator route. Uninstalling Norton Security and then trying again. I even went as far as doing the type and "Windows key + R" and all that. Nothing works. What do I do? Hello, A few days ago I was downloading some software to use on my computer. When it finally finished, I opened it and my Norton 360 picked it up as a virus and removed it immediately. Unfortunately it froze my computer right after and I had to force shutdown it. When it restarted I found that when I tried to open the metro apps it would open but close and return back to the start screen. I also found that some of my files couldn't be opened by double clicking and when I tried to use the "Open with" command, it simply did nothing. I'm currently using Windows 8.1 and any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Continue reading...

I am booting from a Live CD (fedora14) and I need to access the /home/user1, /home/user2, etc. directories to back them up. However, when I try to access (via Nautilus) say, user1's files, I get a message box stating: "The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the premissions necessary to view the contents of "user1". Is there a way to access these files? Thanks. Continue reading...

Hi. I have accidentally installed syslinux on a windows 7 disk, on the first partition. It seems that, i don't know why, the sysnlinux installed on the "mbr" (the first sector) of the first partition, not the first sector of the whole disk. Anyway: The syslinux got installed on the boot partition of windows 7, the one containing the bootmgr file. So, i simply configured it to use chain.c32 to boot using the bootmgr, i placed the needed files to run COM32, and then i configured the syslinux.cfg with this parameters: Code: LABEL win7 MENU LABEL win7 COM32 chain.c32 APPEND ntldr=bootmgr But, when booting, it says: "Err: Couldn't read the first disk secto…

Hi All, I have read several online threads regarding umask, and its a great way to enforce default permissions, but I need more! The process is, a user drop a file on my server via FTP, then a server process needs to read, and execute the file. The user account and the application account is different accounts, but the do belong to the same group. This means that I also cannot do a chmod 775 as the application user because I'm not the owner. In the end the only way was to schedule a cron as root to set chmod 775 permissions recursively on the directories. This is not my preferred method, and I would like something more concrete without dependencies like …

The wallpaper and apps on my iPhone and why they're there, as of February 2014 And so it comes back around to me, this time to guide you through what I use on my iPhone 5s. It's a little more tricky than when I talked iPad for one main reason. I use my iPhone a whole lot more and for much different reasons. If I told you about every single thing on my iPhone, we'd be here a very, very long time. You'd get bored. That's because the majority of apps I try out – either for personal reasons or for my work here on iMore – are put onto my iPhone. Since it's always in my hand or my pocket it's a better device for this type of thing than my iPad. But, I do have a staple of …

The Tao WellShell is a simple Bluetooth-connected gadget that hit Kickstarter recently which detects how hard it’s being compressed. Based on exercise regimens displayed on your iPhone and iPad through their app, you can get in simple, effective reps just about anywhere. A lot of these exercises involve squeezing the WellShell between your hands, but there are many where you can squeeze it between your knees as well. The app ecosystem could allow Tao to connect to games and fitness trackers of all sorts. On its own, the WellShell can also act as a pedometer, heart rate, and sleep monitor. The biggest hiccup I see here are the voice prompts which, in a stern robot lad…

I have 2 drives on my Windows XP computer. The one which now has XP installed on it is a 144 GB drive and my second internal drive has approx. 2 Tb. Now that I’m switching to Windows 8, I am debating on installing Windows 8 on the 2 TB drive. Is there any real advantage to putting Windows 8 on the larger drive or should I just keep Windows on the smaller one? If I install Windows 8 on my second drive currently empty except for a few backup files or if I, at a later time, reinstall Windows 8, will I have to install all of the XP updates before installing Windows 8? Or can I just use the original XP disks I received with my computer to install Windows XP then update …

I am currently running Windows RT on a Lenovo IdeaTab K3011W-F (aka Lynx). This device was used by two individuals before, and so had a previous configuration. I performed a factory reset on said device, except now Windows refuses to activate, so I can't update/customize/upgrade, etc. It's not immediately prohibiting use, but eventually this can be seen as detrimental to the security of the system. I have traced the symptoms back to what seems like a reasonable explanation, which is that the Software Protection Service isn't running, and when it is prompted to run it returns an error stating: Error 5: Access is Denied. When I go to activate Windows from the "Cha…

Hi, I bought a new laptop and installed windows 8 which comes with inbuilt IE10.Now,the issue is that I am unable to connect to my office site which is a citrix xenApp server and corresponding client receiver/plugin(which I downloaded from Internet) is not getting connected to the server. It is clear that most people are facing citrix connectivity issues on windows 8 with IE10. I would like to install Windows 7 OS operating as a virtual machine with Windows 8 being the Base OS. Is this possible? or I found from results that downgrading from IE10 to IE9 on windows 8 (that come inbuilt with IE10) is impossible. But under tools menu->Developer tools,I…
