Can I transfer a valid purchased Windows 8 licence from a computer I don't use to one I do use? I bought two Windows licence upgrades (from Windows 7) under a special offer, but only discovered later (and after the offer expired) that the second purchase didn't go through, and so I only have one valid activation key. By that time I had already used the key on the computer A, and had none for the computer B. Computer B is the one I want to use regularly, leaving computer A unused, so I am happy to remove Windows 8 from computer A in order to use the licence on computer B. I believe I will have to activate Windows on computer B by telephone, and remove the licenc…

I have been using Windows Live Mail for quite some time with Windows 7, but can rarely sort the email in my SENT folder by the heading TO--generally it works in the INBOX. Today suddenly I can sort by that column in my INBOX, but a short while ago I was able to sort by that column in my SENT folder. What is going on, and how do I fix it? When I sort by TO, generally the SUBJECT column gets sorted. Continue reading...

For nearly two weeks now I have suffered with a rash of BSODs. I have seen various stop codes and I have also had good system file checks and un-repairable system file checks. The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back was when I received a BSOD while the computer was sitting at the login screen for a few hours without any action on my part. I ran MemTest86 without issue so, yesterday, I resorted to restoring a backup from a couple of days before the first BSOD event. After the restore I updated my video and network drivers and uninstalled some unused and potentially conflicting programs. Everything was fine until another BSOD. I'm at a loss. Do I need to…

Today, when I clicked on a link on tumblr to view my friends blog and a new tab opened up to LinkBucks. It happened suddenly today and I'm not sure what to do. I have already ran one scan from Malwarebytes and did remove some malware but it continued to open up. I don't have an anti-virus software. Is there anything else I could do to remove LinkBucks? I really don't want to have to have my computer wiped out nor risk angering my mother by telling her something went wrong with my laptop [as much as I TRIED to get her to buy another Kaspersky subscription.] Continue reading...

I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on an IBM thinkpad for around 6 months, since replacing the hard drive after Windows XP died on it. It seemed that my computer was to old for such a modern operating system, and as such, it would frequently go into a Windows-esq fit and the hard drive would be continuously running flat out. The speediest way out of this problem was to hold down the off switch and then boot back up. One day recently, the mouse froze, and the computer would not find the hard drive upon trying to reboot, which is exactly the symptom I had with the last hard disk failure on XP. I tried multiple times to boot the computer. A week past and I decided to see i…

Hi, there are 3 steps on how to protect against Denial of Service attack on a webserver: - limiting the number of requests that a server will accept from a single IP address in a fixed time frame - lowering the minimum transfer rate of a single connection - reducing the connection time from a single client Please can you write ideas on how to apply these protections on basic Apache webserver? I think these are really basics Continue reading...

I am trying to migrate my website and mail server to a new VPS at the IP address 65.181.125.58. To test whether receiving mail is set up correctly, I used my third-party server 66.90.104.230 and tried telnetting to 65.181.125.58 port 25 to send mail, but I got the error "Relaying temporarily denied. Cannot resolve PTR record for 66.90.104.230": (I tried multiple times to post the entire transcript of the conversation with the SMTP server, but linuxforums kept blocking it because of at-signs or hostnames that looked like websites, so I am only able to post the last line of the exchange, but I hope this makes it clear what the problem is): 450 4.4.0 Relaying temporari…

Microsoft Office for iPad is a pretty full featured product – now it's finally here – but it turns out it has no native printing functionality. However, that won't be forever. In 2014 printing documents onto paper may feel antiquated, but for many regular Office users it's all part of the experience. And according to PCWorld, Office for iPad will get this and more in future updates: When asked for comment, Microsoft representatives implied that printing would be added in the future—and that printing was perhaps not all that common for iPad users. “Office for iPad was designed from the ground up for the iPad and for the productivity scenarios that an iPad is well …

Typing in characters with the little [silver remote]( that comes with the Apple TV can be painful. While the Remote app can help ease the pain, nothing beats a full blown keyboard when it comes to typing. As it happens, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard with your Apple TV. Here's how to pair them: How to use a Bluetooth keyboard with your Apple TV Before beginning, keep in mind that not all Bluetooth keyboards will work. Most will but some keys may not function if they don't use Apple's layout. Mostly all Apple wireless Bluetooth keyboards should work just fine. Make sure your keyboard is On and Discoverable.
