OK, I know that there is reference for beginners on the site and the material looks good, but I'm trying to find something that's more of a guide/ walk through. So far I've tried Arch, didn't get anywhere. Installed Ubuntu, that turned itself into a brick Just tried Bohdi - it's been spinning around for about half an hour doing absolutely nothing. So I'm obviously incapable of doing this independently! I'll also add that I've used a version of Fedora inside VM Ware that I've had no problems with. that version was for a course that I'm following...so i really don't know what to think EDIT I've tried to load on two laptops - both 64 bit. One with Win 8…

AirPlay lets you wirelessly beam whatever you're watching on your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV, even videos in App Store apps like YouTube and Netflix. Any app that's incorporated Apple's AirPlay media button will work. All that's required are a few taps! How to AirPlay videos from an app right to your Apple TV Launch the app you'd like to share content from. In my example, I'll use the YouTube app. Find the video you'd like to share and start playing it. Tap on the AirPlay icon. The position of it may differ depending on the app you're using. It should always look the same though. Choose your Apple TV in the popup menu. Wait for your content to begin stream…

One of the most persistent rumors for iOS 8 focuses on Healthbook, a Passbook-style, card-based "wallet" app that would collect all your fitness, nutrition, sleep, and medical data all in one place. These rumors have been tied to the iWatch as a way Apple could track more and better health-based information, but there's also been speculation that Apple might go broader. Benedict Evans: Suppose, for the sake of argument, that Apple does indeed plan a health app that's card-based, somewhat like Passbook. What would happen when you buy and turn on a blood pressure monitor that is certified for 'Healthbook'? Well, one would expect that Apple would use the Bluetooth LE a…

I have been testing Windows 8.1 on our school computers, which are running windows xp and so coul sorely use the upgrade. On the one computer i have been testing it on, i removed the harddrives with the winxp installation, installed a new 2 TB HDD, and proceeded to install Windows 8 on the drive. The drives were completely disconnected from the computer. I tried out win 8, it worked perfectly, couldnt be happier with it, but we are stillwaiting on seeing whether the school distric will give us win8 install keys. In the meantime, i needed to get the computer back to the old Win XP installation for students to use. I removed the Win 8 HDD and reinstalled the two Win XP…

A few days ago I downloaded and ran a hidden file finder tool which found 4 issues and advised to delete them. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what they were. Since then, boot up has been slow and it is slow to open up other applications. It is fine once the windows are open and browsing speed is ok-ish. I have run a Mcafee virus scan which picked up nothing, and also tried Sophos Virus Removal tool but it was much slower than normal and I had to stop it as nothing else would work alongside it. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to check? I did run .Net framework fix it which made some changes, but could not find anymore fix- its for XP…

I had a virus crash of my XP HP dv8225nr laptop about five weeks ago and successfully used my drive D partition to restore my basic xp system to my C drive and brought it fully up-to-date. A week ago, I had another crash, whichI I caused this time, and again, used my drive D recovery partition to restore my XP C drive. This 2nd time everything seems to be O.K. except that neither I nor the system can load ANY Microsoft updates. This was not a problem after the first failure. I now wonder if I this time, I may have incorrectly/incompletely failed to enter all the registration/data/info. correctly and, therefore, perhaps MS doesn't recognize my XP operating system as be…

I googled for help in preparation for the upcoming discontinuation of Microsoft support for my Windows 8 XP! I connected with a Windows support site link "DriverUpdate". Paid for it and as a result they identified the drivers I needed to update and as well I did the reg fix. Have I been had? or did I do the right thing. I definitely don't want to buy a new laptop at this point in time. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks Continue reading...

Today I just read that ANYBODY with a repair disk can boot up my computer and reset my password. If they copy the command prompt to the sethc.exe file they can reset your password by using sticky keys. I read it here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/249181/how_to_reset_your_windows_password.html I tried it and it worked. I am now very concerned that somebody will be able to get in to my computer. How can I prevent people from hacking my computer by doing this? Thank you very much -JP Continue reading...

We have a 3 TB Hitachi Touro Pro , USB 3, external harddrive. The drive worked fine on our older computer running Vista o/s, but since we upgraded to a new computer running Windows 8 the 3 tb drive is not reconized. We have tried many suggestions from various forums, but none have worked. We have this huge harddrive that is only good as a paper weight, thing is we've gone paperless. Is there an updated driver available? Do we have to configure something on our new computer, it worked plug and play on the computer running Vista. Thanks Continue reading...

It makes for sense to me to pursue this question here. I asked on Amazon's community about "Windows 7 Professional Upgrade [Old Version]" My first respondent's response makes no sense to me. I have a legitimate, registered copy of XP Pro. How could the Upgrade product change over time? See below: http://www.amazon.com/Version-corresponding-Version-Upgrading-machine-/forum/Fx3W534VO3GU9MU/Tx2G2593XVMCEEB/1/ref=cm_cd_et_voterdr?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B002DHGM50&cdMSG=addedToThread&cdShowComment=MxAT65X8VXWMBQ&cdSort=oldest&newContentID=Mx28Z3EQ64EZ3UH&newContentNum=1#MxAT65X8VXWMBQ Why is this product called "Old Version." I have a Dell D630 running Windows 7 Professional. It has been running pretty much problem-free for 2 years. My old 320GB hard drive was getting flaky, so about 9 months ago I cloned the system onto a new 500GB drive and everything was still working fine. For printers, I've only had a Brother HL-2170W which is accessed through my home router/WiFi access point and it works fine. Recently, I tried to install a local USB printer that is an HP PSC 2510 Photosmart. When the system tries to get the drivers from Windows Update, the 7th out of 7 drivers fails to load with a message: "hppsc 2500 series driver failure to load" "The filename, directory name, or volum…

Hi there, lately my computer has been blue screening at a more rapid rate with bccodes 116 and 7a being the two error codes I receive upon relaunch. The blue screens seem to only happen whenever I am playing Counter Strike on my computer and never at any other point whether I'm playing another game or working on school/browsing internet. I have a 1 TB HDD in which Windows is installed and booted from and I have a 128gb SSD as well. If there's any extra info I can provide to help make this clearer and fix this issue I'll be happy to oblige. Thank you. Continue reading...

I'm trying to cover our XP desktops until we can afford to get new computers, and want to know what I need to get to keep the computers safe besides a virus checker, as MSE is going by the wayside also. Will I need firewall protection, a spam blocker, and a privacy protection also? Or will those I have on the computer now continue to do their job? Getting new computers will take a while because we simply do not have the money as of yet and won't for at least six months to a year to buy two new PCs. One new PC we could afford in about six months, but not two -- our funds at the moment are needed for medical reasons (travel for my cancer treatments, mostly) so I nee…
