Someone helped me online to change my Start Screen in Windows 8 to the older version of the Start Menu (with "Start" at bottom of list and above it the various actions available). And the option was available on the list to alternate between it and the 8 Start Screen as needed. Somewhere along the time since then I lost that capability and can't remember or find out how to do it. Can anyone tell me how to do that? Continue reading...

Hi everyone, auggy, I am really hoping you can help me with a problem I am having on a single workstation at my office. This is a Windows 7 32-bit build running MS Office 2010 Standard. It differs from other builds in our office because it is used by the head of our Accounts team, and so it has a number of bespoke pieces of software that only she needs access to (payroll software, etc.). All the computers core functionalities seem fine, save the following two, and I would really like some help getting to the bottom of it. 1) Explorer process BES error when attempting to browse files and folders. I can call up Windows Explorer absolutely fine, and be …

My problem is that my screen saver will not operate at all, no matter what settings I use. It does work when I use the 'preview' function though. I am using the inbuilt standard screensavers. No errors pop up, the screen saver just does not actuivate when the alloted time has passed. I am running Windows 7 x64. It's updated to the fullest extent via Windows Update. My mobo is a Gigabyte X79-UD3 running F16 Bios, the latest version. I recently replaced my graphics with a new GTX 780Ti and I am using the latest drivers but the problems existed before the upgrade. My screen saver is set to blank screen after 1 minute (just for testing, it's normally set to 10 minute…

Hi there, I am having a new issue with my laptop. It is a Dell XPS L502x. I am running Windows 7 X64. A new issue has arisen. The computer randomly freezes. There is no software I can identify that causes this. None that I can see straight away anyway. I am forced to shut it down by holding the power button and then boot up again. It works but I dont know when it will randomly freeze and become completely unresponsive. If left frozen, eventually it completely turns off. No blue screen or anything. Any ideas what could be wrong or how to fix it? There have been no new software installations. The latest installation was 2 days before this problem cam…

I am trying to uninstall Search Protect using the Control Panel/uninstall, but it's not working. When you click the uninstall, it triggers a pop up window that by removing it you will get even more stuff. I tried CCleaner, but it does nothing as well. I know a few of these comments prior to mine ask to download other softwares.... I really don't want to get anything free to download. I am willing to go to any box store and get something there, but now download from the net. (I have another computer with spy alert, the same kind of #$#@ and I could uninstall it, but the uninstallations didn't remove it completely and it still acts!) Any help will be greatly …

I have run into an odd problem, and I'm at a complete loss. I have a computer that is assigned 5 static ip addresses, and runs 5 different (virtual) web hosts. Until recently, however, all the users on that machine were assigned email addresses on only one of the domains. A new user, however, has an address on a second domain. I have my mail server setting one domain (and ip address) as the smart host, and am using it to relay mail from the second domain (which, again, is on the same machine). This works everywhere except for SuddenLink.net, which does a reverse lookup, finds that the domain of the sender and the domain of the relay are different, and rejects the mail…

Hi everyone. I am a newbie to Linux. :? I have been using Windows XP home. It's looking like I need to upgrade to windows 7 or switch to Linux. It appears it will soon be unsafe to keep using XP online. If I install Linux Ubuntu alongside my XP I'm wondering if it would work efficiently to use XP for off-line work and Ubuntu for on-line. All responses appreciated. My computer has 3GHz of CPU and 1.43 GB of RAM. Roland Continue reading...

LG has introduced its new Smart Bulbs, a connected light bulb with Bluetooth and Wifi in a similar vein to the Philips Hue. The bulbs connect to both Android and iOS devices – iOS 6 and above – and will retail for around $32. LG says the bulbs will run for over 10 years based on 5 hours usage per day. Features include a security mode so you're able to set the bulbs to come on when you're away from home, and the ability to flash when you're receiving a phone call. Android users can also enable 'party mode' where the lights will blink in time to music. Cross-platform support is great, and it'll be interesting to see how these compare to the Hue if and when they go on …

If you're iPhone or iPad is jailbroken on iOS 7 or above, ProWidgets should be the very next app you install on it. Why you ask? Because it takes multitasking and gesture support to a completely new level. ProWidgets is a collection of apps that can be multitasked in completely different ways than before. By default ProWidgets gives you control over many native functions such as event creation, quick reply messaging, setting alarms, and much more. You can configure icons in Control Center, Notification Center, on your Lock screen, or use Activator to assign custom ones. The rest of ProWidgets works as a stack of cards that you can manipulate and interact with. F…

A quick heads up that Ridge Racer Slipstream is this weeks free app of the week in the App Store. The arcade racing King came back to iOS in December 2012 with all the drifts you can handle. And if you snag it now, you're saving the $2.99 asking price. We were hugely impressed with Ridge Racer Slipstream when we took a first look at it. It's a totally different animal to something like Real Racing 3, but equally fun. Great graphics, sublime arcade style controls with huge drifts perfectly possible, this is one for racing fans everywhere. So, if you're in need of a new game to play this weekend, look no further. Snag it from the App Store at the link below and grab i…
