I downloaded the Windows 7 SP1 Media Refresh file (ISO) and used it to refresh my old boot drive. It worked fine to repair the problem I was having with Internet Explorer 11. Then I replaced the boot hard drive (C:\) with a new, SSD drive. I ran into problems with several programs, including Outlook, so used the refresh DVD again in an attempt to fix the new problems on the SSD. The Windows install (upgrade) goes all the way through to the end, then fails with an error message that this version of Windows is not compatible with my current hardware. The only thing different with the hardware is the SSD. Everything else is the same. How can I get the install to compl…

I use MS Security Essentials. Latest scan of laptop found and removed a worm. Ran a scan on the USB flash drive and found the same worm. The problem is that the flash drive had just been used on my desktop and that was also misbehaving (browser crashing when trying to attach files). Ran scan on desktop but no threats detected. Then ran Safety Scanner with no result. What more can I do to search for malware? Continue reading...

As the title says, whenever I reboot my mbp, outlook "loses" the information and I need to add the account details again. It does seem though that the mailbox and folders are "hidden" somewhere though, because once I've added the account info, the messages re-appear very quickly, in fact a lot quicker than when I first set up the account. A strange one methinks. So any ideas gratefully received. Thanks Continue reading...

Hello, someone removed all of the scripts from /etc/rc.d/init.d/ and I am trying to get it back using below command. Code: rpm -Va | awk '/missing.*init.d/ {print $NF}' | xargs rpm -qf --queryformat '%{name} ' | xargs yum -y reinstall It re-installs all of the scripts that were previously installed. But I know that I had "passenger" and I am not sure why above command did not bring back "passenger" script. Maybe because it was not installed via RPM? Is there another way of solving problem with missing scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d ? Thanks for any suggestion. T Continue reading...

This one is for the community: My wife has a Lenovo Z560 running my home rolled ubuntu 12.04 distro. It would randomly shut off for no apparent reason. I got to doing some research and found out that there are power regression issues in all of the 3.xx kernels that effect the intersection of i3,5,7 sandybridge chips with integrated graphics that can cause all kind of problems. I followed several tutorials to no avail. Then I figured it out. AFAIK this is an original solution, I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. I went in to the BIOS and changed the power mode from ACHI to SATA-compatible. It has run for a week with no issues. It did get about 10 degr…

I have made a nice persistent USB3 stick using Mate 16 with the Universal USB Installer.. I have set this system up and installed a few programs. It works very nicely. Now I wanted to copy it for a few friends. But just copying the files to another stick does not work - it does not boot. I even used exactly the same stick - same make, capacity and color, LOL. But no luck. Then I made a dummy installation on the other stick and copied my setup stick files over it. That did not work either. What am I missing. Any help would be appreciated. Edit: I found the solution. It works with this tool: http://download.cnet.com/USB-Image-T...-75449768.html Continue re…

If you pre-purchased it then you probably already know, but today is release day for the long-awaited expansion pack to Blizzard's popular dungeon crawl action game Diablo III, Reaper of Souls. Reaper of Souls raises the level cap to 70; adds a new game mode - Adventure - that gives you the ability to go anywhere and slay anything that crosses your path; emp…

The "Your Verse" section of Apple's web site - part of its ad campaign for the iPad Air - has been updated with a new section about how the iPad is being used to detect concussion injuries in athletes and help their trainers assess when they're ready to play again. Apple: There is no typical recovery from concussion. And it’s not always clear when a full recovery has occurred. So as injured athletes progress, trainers like Cruickshank are with them every step of the way, monitoring their performance with C3 Logix on iPad. Typically, he tests them every five to six days. Because all the data collected on iPad is stored by the app, Cruickshank can share a complete pic…

A week ago we ran a reader poll asking about your iOS 7.1 battery life, and we've had some interesting results. A full week after the update came out, we'd all had a decent amount of time to discharge and recharge our iPhone and iPad batteries and get a better feel for whether or not anything had changed. Battery life differs from person to person, and in our sampling it looks as if the bad press on the issue may have had some standing. About 22.5% of those surveyed said their battery life was in some way better than before the update. Not so bad, but then compare it to 34% who saw no change and a combined 43% who said that they're seeing a negative outcome. Of that a …

On March 24, 2001, Apple released Mac OS X v10.0. Codenamed "Cheetah," the new Mac operating system represented a radical departure from what came before it. OS X would help to mold Apple into what it's become today and it would also lay the groundwork for the enormous success Apple saw with mobile devices. In the late 1990s Apple had a problem. Its operating system was showing its age. The software had gone through nine major revisions over the years and had been steadily improved and refined over the years. But there were problems. After more than a decade of development, the seams in Mac OS were showing - the software didn't support things like protected memory, …

To all USERS: I wonder why Microsoft won’t support Windows XP after April 15th, 2014, when Windows 8 is not even half of it... If they wont support Windows XP, it means it is FREE REIGN to copy it and SELL it as they give up the copyrights to it and it is all free reign to disassemble it and alter it to anyone's means. THAT is a disgrace to Microsoft and their poor creation of Windows 8 being made for a child to use and not any professional user. There is a lot of things missing in Windows 8 that is in Windows XP only the real professionals needs, and one of them is the customizations of themes to the desktop instead of colored boxes that have no special…

Hi Jessen P, Thank you for replying to my query about the browsing history that drops down from the "Search box" in IE11 when you click (even accidentally!!) on the BORDER of the box. In answer to your question about Google, I am assuming that because Search is provided by Google whose name appears next to my search box, it might be in Google's interests to discreetly compile a browsing history which is non-deletable for marketing purposes. I might be wrong!! In response to your suggestion about clicking the small red x against each website in the list in order to delete it, unfortunately no small x appears at all. Can you provide me with any other suggestions …

After restarting my laptop which is running Windows 8, I've encountered a problem that I have not recently had with logging into my user account, or any other account for that matter. After the restart, I attempted to enter my usual pin that I've used hundreds of times and a message come up saying "The password is incorrect. Try again."
