Don't despair if you didn't get WWDC tickets. There's something cool going on right next door, and it's totally free Now that Apple's announced the results of its lottery, you have a good idea as to whether you're going to be attending Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June. If you didn't get a ticket — or even if you did — there's an alternative happening at the same time that you can go to instead. It's nearby and it's absolutely free. I'm talking about AltConf. AltConf is in its second year - last year it was branded "AltWWDC" and happened at the San Francisco State University campus on Market Street, only a couple of blocks away from the Moscone Center w…

Klout has been updated to version 2.0, adding a number of features to help users stay in control of their online presence. These include a personalized content stream, content scheduling, a topic explorer, and more. The content stream is based on your interests. When you see something you like, you can drag it up to the share window above the feed and share with Twitter, Facebook, or both. Edit your list of interests by pulling the feed to the right and releasing or tapping the menu button in the top left corner and selecting Topics. From the menu that appears, you can also select Create, Schedule, and Perks. Create will take you back to the content feed, where you can…

Microsoft launched Office for iPad nearly two weeks ago. Now iPad owners can enjoy view Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. Have (or obtain as Microsoft would like) an Office 365 subscription and you’re able to not just view documents, but edit them as well. The apps have seen over 12 million downloads since launch. The Office for iPad team just wrapped up an AMA on Reddit where they shared a lot of interesting facts about the product. Highlights from the Q&A below. Continue reading...

just recently a lot of people are asking why does ms have to shut down the security updates and I cant tell them I if I'd have been in-charge would have created an app so that if you required updates for xp that is where you would have gone to the idea is that an app would store all the work that xp programmers have done and would still allow others to update with a registration to that site this would be a lot less hassle than promoting a server that would be running constant and would allow any type of data use to continue Continue reading...

After a good five months of having no issues, I'm suddenly having problems with a single user account accessing our shared server at work. -There are five/six computers in the office, all of which are having no problem accessing the server. My laptop has two user profiles. One has access. -When I try to access the server on the problem profile, I get a username and password prompt. There is no username/password combo that I can think would apply -When I put the username down as Administrator, I get the following message: //XXX is not accessible, you may not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administrator... This user can't sign in because this a…

I've attempted to install Windows8 as upgrade from WinXP. Upgrade Assistant said the Dell Optiplex machine could handle the upgrade. However, installation seems to be stuck in a reboot loop, showing a choice of Win8 or WinSetup, with a message saying "Windows 8 will run automatically in 30 seconds." Following the countdown, it "reboots" to same screen. I was alerted to expect several restarts and extended time. This loop has been going on for 3+ hours now, though. Should I assume the installation is stuck and isn't going to work. I don't even know how to get out of the loop. Suggestions, please! Continue reading...

Hi a few years back I upgraded my windows xp to windows 7, but recently it's ben going really slow and ads keep popping up when I open a wep page, so I am thinking I have a virus, so my question is this. If I reload my machine, would it try going back to xp? Or would it load windows 7 again? I bought it online without a disc. My other question is would my antivirus protection get saved or would I lose that? Maybe I could move it over to my external hard drive. And is it the hard drive or some other part of the computer that gets the virus? I would hate for my external hard drive to have the virus. Continue reading...

Websteroids downloaded onto my laptop whilst I was downloading Nokia PC Suite from a site called File Parade. I have tried to uninstall websteroids many times but find myself unsuccessful each time. They refuse to leave when I go to the control panel and uninstall. I have tried other recommendations, reset internet options on my laptop, etc etc. They are still there. I wouldn't be too worried about them, however I believe they are stopping me from accessing a heap of websites. Since they came onto my laptop, I can't access sites such as eBay, yahoo, gumtree and many more. I type the website in the URL and it appears to load for a short period of time. then just stops and …

Hi there, I have installed Xubuntu on an old Dell Dimension 2400, with embedded graphics Intel845. The 'Try Xubuntu' works great. It shows my monitor at 1600x900 resolution. If I do a lspci, I get: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Co 82845/GL[brookdale-G] chipset Integrated Graphics Device(Rev 01). All that is correct... So I installed, and Xubuntu is the only OS on my 200GB disk. But then when I boot, I get the boot menu; moments later it shows 'the Xubuntu' logo in the middle in clear graphics. And then, nothing. Blank screen... When I go back to the live disk and check /etc/x11 on the disk itself, there is no xorg.conf file. What do I make out of that? Or is t…

I am a linux noob & hobby developer, mostly working on own ideas, experimenting around. I don't like using the available IDEs for Ubuntu, I mostly work with GVim and GCC and independent debuggers. Which brings me to my question: is there an alternative to Nemiver and DDD? Both of them are broken it seems. I need a debugger with a graphical interface that works. Continue reading...

I have been using Windows XP for years but with the help of some great people have been migrating over to Linux, specifically Mint Maya 13 (Mate). I think its a great OS, but am still working out the bugs. I installed a graphics card that can handle dual monitors (Nvidia,GeForce2 MX/AGP/SSE2),and have been using dual monitors using the EVGA UV plus 12 plugged into a usb port for years with no problems. Now when I am in Mint ( I am dual booting until I can work out all the bugs), Mint doesn't see the other monitor at all. I tried installing the recomended Nvidia drivers (The X.Org Foundation) but still no luck seeing the other monitor. I understand that the EVGA UV plus 12…
