I've had a serious crash of my Lenovo laptop that is running Windows XP. I've been able to get the system back up and running by using the techniques offered in two of Microsoft's "papers" (for lack of a better word). I've performed a complete system test using Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery software and a full scan using Maywarebytes. So far, I can't find the problem. But I did install a large update to iTunes virtually right before this happened. Does anyone know whether or not the iTunes update could have corrupted my registry files? Lura Continue reading...

Just found out that my 5 year old desktop can not be upgraded to Windows 8 from XP because of an incompatible bios. Already discussed this issue elsewhere Like a lot of home users the desktop was used for more serious work like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Photo editing high quality pictures. What are the opinions on just letting a high quality antivirus like Bitdefender do the protecting and just letting go that Microsoft will no longer support security updates for XP. I know that one possibility is just keep disconnected from the internet forever. Just wondering. Continue reading...

Hello, Does anyone know how to have a dialog box with a custom message pop up any time that a specific program is opened? The computer is running Windows XP Professional 2002 with Service Pack 3. The program is used to operate a scientific instrument that keeps getting damaged by lab users who disregard printed instructions around it. Ideally, I could have a dialog box pop up that requires users to click an "OK" button before the program opens. I've spent some time browsing the web for ideas, but have so far come back empty-handed. The program is usually opened from a shortcut on the desktop. Many thanks, Jeremy Continue reading...

I just put together a computer and loaded XP. Before you chastize me, I know it is ancient and about to run out of support, so I am doing this now because I already own an XP disc and cannot afford an upgrade right now. I just want a simple machine to email, that's it. This machine should be adequate. After loading the OS, I tried to run Windows Update, I know there are about a thousand updates. But when I tried running Updates, first it told me I had to update my browser to Windows 8 so I did, and re-booted. Now when I try running Windows Update, It quickly tells me "The website has encountered a problemand cannot display the page you are trying to view." …

Hi, I use to burn cds successfully on both cd-r and cd-rw and now I cannot burn on either. There is not an error message, it says the same as it always did, i.e., burning to disc and the incremental stage of burning. However the disc remains blank, and Windows Media Player says it has successfully done the burn. I have tried troubleshooting, but it didnt seem to address this particular problem. Can someone help please??? Thanks Continue reading...

I use windows 8. I have 300 gb hard disk storage. Being fond of watching movies I have collected almost 85 gb of movies and kept in a separate hard disk partitioned 100 gb. since then whenever i play any new movie they hang for some interval of time. In vlc player an error pops out "VLC could not read the file (Bad file descriptor)." I also tried km player. But it stops again and that also at that same time interval in the movie. I thought that must be a problem due the lack of space in the drive, so i cleared some space about 33 gb, but same thing continues. I tried to copy into another drive but the copying stops at a particular point everytime I try to copy! I even che…

Hi, I'm having the same problem with a Photo Kiosk KVS from Photo Para....... I'm using a piece of software that only allows this one application to run, disables the corner thingies and the windows button on a samsung ATIV 500T win8 tablet. The problem is that the software doesn't disable the pinch/zoom feature so the clients are trying to get their photos larger thinking that the zoom will work but it's screwing up the kiosk application as it has it's own zoom. I tried to find the options to turn the feature off but my tablet says that I don't even have a mouse installed. Please help! Carl Split from- https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us…

I have a 2 year-old Acer PC with i3, Windows 7 Home Premium, equipped with four different memory card readers. For a while the card readers used to work, but now, they won't recognize that a card has been inserted. Let me be more precise, an activity light does show that a card is inserted, but when I click on the drive letter, a dialogue box tells me to "insert a card in drive..." No, it isn't just this card (I knew you were going to ask). It's the same with all cards, CF or SD. whether 1gb or 16gb. I have run all the troubleshooting I could on the system. The device manager tells me the devices are working properly. I've checked the drivers, and microsoft assures…

I recently installed and paid for an (alleged?) protection program called "Windows Web Watchdog". I have since gotten some indication that it a fraud and is contributing to some problems and strange messages popping up (e.g. frequent requests to take "surveys"; something called "truisms" oftenb mispelled, etc.). I should have Microsoft Security Essentials running on my computer, but when I attempt to activate it, I keep getting this Windows Web Watchdog screen coming up. Can anyone verify if Windows Web Watchdog is a valid protection program... or is malware of some type? Continue reading...

I am using RecordMyDesktop to record Linux Mint Mate tutorials. The program is easy to use and the output quality is quite good. On the fly encoding is impossible - even on my i7 CPU and 8GB of RAM. So I do the deferred encoding. But that takes forever. A video of 266MB took about 40 minutes to encode - that beats even the Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 on Windows 7 which is also very slow. I noticed that the encoding is done with only 1 of my 8 cores. The core runs at 3.6GHz but it would certainly be better if all 8 cores were used. Does anybody know of a way to set the RecordMyDesktop to use more than 1 core. Continue reading...

RealPlayer Cloud is a new way to store, find, and share videos. Rather than simply holding videos like a service such as Dropbox might, video is the singular focus of RealPlayer Cloud, and it plays multiple formats on desktops and mobile devices. Once you upload a video to RealPlayer Cloud, you can view it anywhere. The universal app for iOS devices has sections for recent videos, your videos, collections, sharing, and web videos. You can share video through email, Messages, Facebook, and Twitter. To share, hit the share button in the top right corner of a section, tap Share, then select your desired videos, tap the button at the bottom of the screen, and pick your ser…
