As one who helps Seniors with computer problems it is necessary to run my computers with different versions of Windows so I can sort out problems they are having. Consequently I have one each on Windows XP, 7 and 8.1. No matter what I try it seems impossible to network these computers even though I am sure there is a way. I want to network so I can move files from one to the other. For instance I might be working on a video problem with a Particular bit of software while I have video files on another and it would be nice to be able to move files back and forth. Incidentally one time my Windows 8.1 sees the other computers and next day does not any more. Help plea…

Let me start by saying I'm running Windows 8.1 and I'm talking about about the Microsoft Reader App. It used to be I could click on a pdf link on the internet, no mater the browser, and a little box would show up and I could open the pdf right from there. Now when I try to do that it doesn't give me an option to open the file in Reader and the only way to open it is to save it. Does anyone know how to open a file in Reader straight from the web. I received a lightly used computer from work with Vista 32-bit on it. I tried updating it to Windows 7 Home Premium with an update disk that I purchased a few years ago from Microsoft. Everything went fine. It installed properly. I downloaded ALL of the updates to get it to SP1+, but seems to need an activation key. Can I simply purchase a key without having to reinstall the operating system or do I need to purchase another upgrade or full-version of Windows 7 Home Premium? Please be specific on where, how, and what to purchase. Thanks for the help. Continue reading...

Hi, Thanks for any help in advance. TLDR: Windows trying to log into user 1 with old password and not giving me option to log into user 2 I am trying to set up an new account for my house mate to use. This is something I have done loads of times before and never had a problem with. This time however it is causing me some grief. First off I created a new user account (user 2) gave it a password and set it to a normal user account (not admin). I also changed the password on my account (user 1) which is an admin account. Now when I restarted my computer I expected it to go to the log in screen and give me two options (user 1 & user 2) both of wh…

Could someone please help. This is the first time I have been on something like this so I hope I am not wasting peoples time. Our Media player appears to have gone into overdrive it appears to be copying everything on windows that pertains to entertainment and also appears to be downloading music as soon as we go on the internet. We have never down loaded music, films, iTunes or that sort of thing. The computer continually freezes and we find that we are unable to work properly on it. Any assistance would be much appreciated, I hope we don't have a virus, we do have up to date Norton Security. HP (Hewlett Packard) also appears to be copying every photo and video we have …

Unicode provides the ability to put various accents over characters by using combining diacritical marks. I am learning Russian, and putting accents on words makes a big difference. I use Alt+0769 (301 in hexacimal) to put in the combining accent acute mark, and I can put these accents over any character. My problem is that I cannot find any way to make Windows Search deal with these characters. In Unicode, a typical accented vowel will be represented by two Unicode characters. I need a way to enter these characters in the search string. If I try to use Alt+0769, the search box shows a hollow box character, but does not actually search for it. Does Microsoft have a way to…

My PC is showing ALL services, ALL SECURITY, DEFENDER, FIRE WALL, etc., as STOPPED when I click to RUN these things...exactly 5 mins later, they STOP again. NOTHING IS WORKING CORRECTLY. I reset my PC to factory settings -- but my pics were all there. AVG did a quick ONE TIE fix, tried to SCAN the OS, and immediately found there was an issue. Some of the STOPPED will NOT allow me to RUN it at all! Tried to get help w/MS, and PREMIRE Techs (free w/new DELL of 3 mos old), but only told to FACTORY RESET - that did NOT fix prob. Hackers have ALL my pswds, even REMOVED all contacts SYNCED via G+ from cell and replaced w/HUNDREDS of strangers from G+members in my circles.…

Windows 7 on older ASUS laptop with 3G RAM Running MSE AND Malabyte Malware per computer builder's (now questionable) recommendation. Tried MSE full scan to try to fix sometimes hourly run-up of CPU from 2-3% to 100%. Scan is approximately 90% complete (1,312,809 items scanned) but will not finish because the CPU is running at or near 100% -- occasionally dropping to 90-95%, so MSE is only scanning 2-3 items per second. The variable culprits in high CPU use are: taskmgr.exe Jim taskhost.exe LOCAL dwm.exe Jim msmpeng.exe SYSTEM mssec.exe Jim svchost.exe LOCAL svchoset.exe SYSTEM I have read about problems in each area and have repea…

Virus creates a Group Policy Client using svchost -k GPSvcGroup. I have run all the scanning tools (and run MSE all the time) and they do not recognize this as an issue - I believe because it looks like the Group Policy settings on a corporate network. This is a stand alone machine running W7 Home Premium - it does not belong to a group. (The normal gpsvc settings on a stand alone machine seem to be svchost -k netsvcs). I assume this is trying to use the group policy infrastructure to take control of machine configurations like a botnet. How do I get rid of this ? How do I see the address of any machine communicating with the group policy client so I can rep…

Hi everyone!! Maybe this is a stupid question. Let's suppose I have a login system for users, and that logged users can insert posts of texts using Ajax requests on the data base. A logged user can use Firebug to post a big amount of posts on the data base. How can I prevent this? To prevent a user to use client side JavaScript to post a big amount of Ajax requests. I am using PHP as the server language. I could use a CSFR token, but once the user has the token in the client side, she/he could use the token to perform thousands of Ajax requests. Thank you very much!! Continue reading...

I'm currently running my computer with two partitions on its, windows m8 and Debian with xfce4. The other partition with windows is irrelevant, my issues with Debian xfce4 have arousen inbetween different resolutions with different monitors. I usually use my 720p 1360x768 tv as a monitor for my computer. I switched my computer over to use on a larger 1080p television. The resolution while I used the larger television was 1920x1080, after hooking my computer back up to my 1360x768 tv I had issues with my display, eventually after trying to add display modes and a preferred mode in xorg.conf, which didn't actually change my resolution I managed to switch my resolut…

Hello folks, I'm fairly new with this whole Linux thing, I've played with a few distros mostly in the last month trying to figure things out before the end of security support for Win XP. I've so far tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Linux Mint. I might have messed up with Mint. I did like the KDE Desktop though. Although I've had some issues with the hardware that I'm using, maybe too old, maybe has something broke in it, dunno. This PC is something ancient in terms of most; an '04 with an amd athlon 64 x2, an AGP Radeon 2400, and about 2 gigs ram. I've used and abused it and she's heading the way of the dodo. I'll probably be building a new machine here in the next mont…

We may have had to deal with the usual April articles yesterday, but one that stood out from all the jokes was T-Mobile’s plans to scrap corporate discount from Simple Choice plans. The mobile network has today confirmed a partial reversal, allowing only existing customers to retain their discount. Sorry, new subscribers. Those who take out new rate plans will be met with a T-Mobile gift card worth $25 when purchasing a new device, while those who are already with the network will be able to continue with their general bill savings. It’s a positive move, especially since discounts from T-Mobile have been up to 15 percent, depending on where you work. T-Mobile CEO Jo…
