On my Vista machine, Windows defender has always warned me of the following module: C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mdnsNSP.dll I inadvertantly clicked Deny (OK, I wasn't paying close attention) instead of Permit and saved it. Now, I cannot go back and Permit it. Tried going into Windows Defender to the History tab but that won't let me change it. Is there any way to change Deny to Permit? RickM46 Continue reading...

HI, I have an old Viglen HX420T2i platform, which consists of four identical blades/nodes each connected to two HDDs. One node has suddenly stopped seeing both its HDDs, and they don't even show up in the BIOS any more, and I suspect the disk controller has died. The node has one PCI-e 2.0 x16 slot free, so can anyone recommend a suitable disk controller card, specifically known to work with Ubuntu 12.04 please? RAID functionality is not necessary. Hi I'm trying to set up a system that will push incoming files received via sftp/scp out to several other servers in (near) realtime, again via sftp/scp I've looked into using a tool such as lsync from the perspective of remotely replicating the data directory. I've also looked at ssh port forwarding but neither have really provided me with the answers I'm looking for yet. I'm convinced theres a (relatively) simple solution to this and would appreciate just some pointers at the moment if anybody has any ideas. Thanks in advance Continue reading...

Siri is potentially going to get a lot stronger, as Apple has quietly acquired yet another speech recognition company — this time a well-known firm called Novauris. Founded in 2002 and spun out of the better-known Dragon Systems, Novauris is one of the early pioneers of modern voice recognition. Although Apple has made no official announcement of the purchase, TechCrunch has confirmed that the deal is done and was actually completed in 2013. One of the biggest differentiators about Novauris in terms of the competitive landscape, is that they operated in both the embedded and server space, and they also owned the core engine. This of course would make them a valuable…

Nest has put a halt to sales of their connected Nest Protect smoke detector over concerns that the alarm could be unintentionally deactivated. Protect smoke alarms have a "Protect Wave" feature which allows users to deactivate the alarm when it's activated under not dangerous conditions (say, smoke from cooking) by waving at the alarm. The Nest Wave feature has been found in Nest's own testing to be possible to be deactivated under "a unique combination of circumstances". Continue reading...

If you have an Apple TV but find it difficult or impossible to see and navigate the menu system VoiceOver is there to help. An accessibility option meant to help those with visual challenges, VoiceOver "speaks" the controls to you, letting you hear what you can't see. You can even set up shortcuts to turn VoiceOver on and off with just two taps. How to enable VoiceOver on a new Apple TV Plug in your Apple TV Wait VoiceOver will automatically turn itself on and ask you if you want to continue with audio prompts. Although Facebook previously had Wi-Fi calling enabled on their Facebook Messenger app, the option to use it was limited to the US, UK and Canada. To expand on that capability, Facebook has now updated Messenger to v4.1 and is offering free calls over Wi-Fi wherever you are. What's New in Version 4.1 Free Calls: Talk as long as you want and stay in touch wherever you are. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply). It's a small change to the app but one I'm sure a lot of folks looking for cheap calling or a Skype alternative will appreciate. The update is live in the iOS App Store right now and you can grab it via the link below. Let…

I am getting a "Incorrect Function" error on both of my DVD-RW drives on Windows XP. I have been investigating the issue for a few days now and have come up empty handed. 1. I have tried deleting the Upper/Lower filters in the registry. This helped make sure they are detected but nothing else. 2. I have tried updating drivers for both drives via firmware update. This made them show as DVDRW drives instead of just CD drives but I still don't have burning capability. 3. I have tried editing the registry in order to see a "Recording" tab on the drive properties. Even after that edit, the tab never appears. I tried to alternate between settings (1, 2, or 3) between…

Seems pretty generous. I knew I should've waited a bit longer. But anyway, to the crunch. According to the Daily Tech, Microsoft will give you an instant $100 discount if you swap your existing XP machine for the latest Windows 8.1 flavor. More on the subject here: http://www.dailytech.com/Microsoft+Will+Give+You+100+to+Get+Rid+of+Your+Windows+XP+PC/article34567.htm I wonder if I can claim retrospectively? No, I guess not.... In the XP virtual mode there is an Internet Explorer 8. I understand that after Microsoft eliminates support for XP that can cause future security issues. I am having a similar problem with the Mail app on Surface 2. The Inbox is not displaying all the messages that I can see through the Web browser. I did select Download email from Any time in account settings. But when syncing it randomly picks messages in Inbox for display. Hello, My father-in-law asked me to help him with his laptop since he's been having a lot of problems with it. After a lot of work trying to fix the issues, we decided to re-install Windows since it seemed to be the easier solution. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the installation disk. After some research, I discovered that it is possible to download an ISO file of Windows 7 on Digital River and put it on a USB drive in order to create a pseudo re-installation disk. I looked under the laptop and saw that the Product Key was still visible on the sticker, so I went ahead and re-installed Windows 7 using a USB drive that had the proper ISO file on it. However, it's…
